1 Syllabus DeCal 98/198 The Entrepreneur Speaker Series Fall 2014 University of California, Berkeley Prerequisites Strong interest in entrepreneurship To gain the most out of this course a history of entrepreneurship and or entrepreneurial efforts in your past will be helpful but is not required. Attach Application Form and Resume. Goal: To help you succeed as an entrepreneur by helping you gain a broader perspective on the world of entrepreneurship. By not reinventing the wheel and learning from current entrepreneurs journey the goal of this class is to learn from their experiences, successes, failures, and mistakes to create a stronger foundation for your future entrepreneurial success. Description: The Entrepreneur Speaker Series is a weekly speaker series that brings entrepreneurs to share their insights, struggles, challenges and lessons learned with aspiring entrepreneurs from all over the world. The lectures and guest speakers will provide students with varying perspectives to entrepreneurship and give them real world insights to what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. Ultimately, the point of this DeCal will be to help you gain a broader perspective on the world of entrepreneurship and help you not reinvent the wheel by avoiding the mistakes made by entrepreneurs that came before them. 2 Team dynamics/management Corporate Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship Success/Failures/Struggles/Insights Industry Leadership Risk Management Strategies Market Behavior Consumer Psychology/Reception Scale Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly and consist of readings (13 total) of current/recent events relevant to entrepreneurship. A one- paragraph summary with your perspective will need to be turned in electronically by 11:59pm on the following Sunday for at least 10 of the readings. Links to readings will be provided. The readings and summary will account for 30% of the grade. Information about the speakers will be made available as early as possible. It will be your responsibility to research them and study up on their companies ahead of time, so that you may gain a more in- depth understanding of their perspective and ask good questions. Exam: There will be a final exam at the culmination of class on all speakers and readings and will account for 30% of the final grade. Attendance: Attendance sheet will circulate each class. More than 2 absences will put you at risk of not passing the class. The attendance will account for 40% of the final grade. Extra Credit: Any student that is able to invite an entrepreneur who took a company public (i.e. IPO) as a guest speaker will get extra credit equivalent to the final exam or ten homework assignments upon the student s discretion. Grading: P/NP. A Not Pass grade will be given for failure to complete homework and for poor attendance. Extra credit can be applied as mentioned above.
