Study the intersection of higher education and major social, cultural and political developments of the nation. Academic and Student Affairs Organizations EDUC X381.3 Using an organizational lens, study how higher education works as an integrated and complex system rather than as a collection of mutually exclusive divisions, departments or functions. 4 Prerequisites for Admission The Certificate Program in Student Affairs and Higher-Education Administration requires a bachelor s degree. Curriculum Requirements The curriculum comprises 3 required courses (9 semester units) and 1 elective (3 semester units) for a total of 180 hours of instruction. All coursework must be completed within five years of registering for the certificate. Because requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field, we recommend completing the curriculum in a timely fashion. You may start the Certificate Program in Student Affairs and Higher- Education Administration at any time. Enroll in courses and register at extension.berkeley.edu/cert/student-affairs.html. Completion Requirements You must maintain an overall minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA), with a grade of C or better in each course. A Certificate With Distinction will be awarded to those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 3.9 or higher.

Riley, Ph.D., is the director of the UC Berkeley Leadership, Engagement, Advising and Development (LEAD) Center, which is responsible for facilitating involvement and leadership development opportunities for students. He has worked in student affairs for the past 10 years in various areas. I am looking forward to working with current and new professionals as we assess our practices to ensure we are meeting the current and future developmental and learning needs of all students. Steve Sutton, Ph.D., has worked in higher education for close to 30 years, working in a variety of areas such as student housing, enrollment management, student union management, student activities and the dean of students. He currently serves as the UC Berkeley assistant vice chancellor for residential and student service programs. This certificate will create a wonderful space for individuals to merge theory with practice, regardless of whether the individual is a seasoned practitioner or new to the field, Sutton says. Continue Your Studies With a Master s Degree You may apply 12 semester units earned from this certificate toward the University of San Francisco s (USF) Master s in Organization and Leadership. If admitted, you will need to complete an additional 18 units to earn the USF degree.

6 How to Register for This Professional Certificate Before you complete the third course in the curriculum, you should register for the Certificate Program in Student Affairs and Higher-Education Administration at extension.berkeley.edu/cert/register.html. Complete your student account profile if you are a new student, and pay the nonrefundable certificate registration fee.
