30-Day Plan: Roadmap to Success
Job Creation and 30-Day Placement Plans Job Creation individualizes the employment relationship between job seekers and employers to meet the needs of both by matching a job seeker s strengths with an employer s needs. 30-Day plan is helpful in this customized process because it is a tool that helps create action steps and tracks progress. 6
Getting to Know the Job Seeker Visit individual at home, work, in community Needs related to the identified goals should be discussed Career exploration Additional training/skills building Job support needs such as job coaching, travel training, counseling Accommodations such as assistive technology, ASL interpreters, modification of hours, duties..etc. 7
Person-Centered Career Planning What do you like to do? What are your interests, hobbies? What education have you had? What would you like to learn? What is your current daily schedule? What do you do for fun? On the weekends? 8
Getting to know the Job Seeker: Questions to Ask Have they worked before? What jobs have they loved? Hated? In which type of work environments were they successful? What social skills do they bring? What jobs or work environments should be avoided? Don t dismiss something as unrealistic until you have explored what it could lead to! 9
Networking, Networking, Networking Networking is building relationships before you need them. When you need them, you will know whom to call and he or she will want to help you. Darling Networking is cultivating relationships and investing regular time and effort establishing and maintaining career-related contacts. US Dept. of the Interior 10
Getting to know the Job Seeker Ethical Guidelines Individuality Choice Respect Participation Social Inclusion Employment acquisition & support Advancement opportunities APSE Guidelines- DiLeo, McDonald, & Killam 11
Questions to Ask Employers Tasks that take people away from crucial duties? Tasks you want to see done more efficiently? Common tasks that most people do? Busy times when you could use extra help? Do you use temps on a regular basis? Entry-level tasks that skilled workers are doing? Tasks that you'd like to see done that no one has time to do? Jobs that you use high school or work- study students?
30-Day Placement Plan What is it? A month long plan towards finding employment Includes: Tasks Due dates Who is responsible Updated every 30 days (at a minimum) 13
Why Write One? Most agencies require some sort of plan for employment Usually they are long-term Typically they are broad and do not offer step by step instructions Can focus on the services the agency will provide instead of action steps 14
Any job seeker Who is involved Their Support Network (providers, friends, family, neighbors, etc.) Family, Friends Residential staff, other professionals Employment Specialist/Job Developer 15
Advantage of Using One Keep everyone focused on job search Make sure something gets done each week towards getting a job The job seeker and their support network are involved in the job search Sense of accomplishment, even if a job was not found yet 16
When Do You Write One? At one of the first meetings to work on goals Every 30 days until person is comfortable in their new position Can also be used as a follow-up tool for on-going support needs 17
How Do You Write One? Set short and long-term goals Long-term plan at top of page Job seeker s skills and strengths at top of page Job seeker and employment specialist discusses goals and tasks, and set time frame for completion of these steps. 18
4 Major Steps for 30-Day Plan STEP 1:SET UP TASKS STEP 2: ROLE ASSIGNMENT STEP 3: DATES & DEADLINES STEP 4: SIGNATURE 19
List of Tasks STEP 1: Set up Tasks Tasks should be accomplished within 30 day time frame. Specific, so everyone knows what they are responsible for. Divided out between job seeker, employment specialist, and others Measurable so it is clear when goal is met. 20
TASKS for JOB SEEKERS Talk to friends and family members about their careers Pick up job applications at places they might like to work Call three employers that they are interested in working for Research company on internet 21
TASKS for JOB SEEKERS (cont.) Set up an Informational Interview Make a list of questions for the interview Take pictures of places in their community they might like to work Take a tour of a business they might like to work at or know more about 22
TASKS for EMPLOYMENT SPECIALISTS Contact employers they already have relationships with on behalf of the job seeker Call job seeker s references to see what they will say to an employer Assist the job seeker to identify specific employers to target Keep the team on track with each action item 23
TASKS for OTHER SUPPORT PEOPLE Assist the job seeker in reading job postings, internet employment sites, etc. Use their own connections to network on behalf of the job seeker Practice interview skills with the job seeker Assist job seeker in identifying businesses of interest in their area 24
STEP 2: Role Assignment Assigning a person who will be responsible for completing each task. Job seeker should be responsible for several steps each month, no matter what their disability is. They can have help with the step, if they need it. Employment person should not be the only person helping the job seeker. 25
STEP 3: Dates & Deadlines Come up with a due date for each task Have a minimum of one step per week Follow-up dates are key to success 26
STEP 4: Signature Make sure to have everyone sign the plan Give a copy to everyone involved Certain steps can be broken down to make them less complicated For example, 5 phone calls a week to potential employers, job seeker can do one or two a day 27
30-Day Form Sample 28
Case Study: A look at Jane 45 year old woman with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a developmental disability Worked for 8 years in a supermarket as a bagger and cart retriever Wanted more interesting and less physical work Employment Specialist and Jane came up with several work possibilities. 29
Jane s 30-Day Plan Outline Job Seeker: Jane Plan Dates: 2/1/04-3/1/04 Job Goal: Customer service or veterinary assistant Skills and Strengths: Loves animals, particularly cats; likes to assist customers; friendly; experienced in caring for her own cat 30
Case Study: Jane (cont.) Jane wanted some independence in her job search Emily suggested Jane visit her local One-stop Career Center Jane wanted to update her resume, she signed up for a resume class at the Career Center Jane had a strong interest in animals 31
Case Study: Jane (cont.) Jane contacted local veterinarians to find out about openings and opportunities She also called the vet that her cat went to, to see about openings there Jane s friend helped Jane write a cover letter to apply for a position at the Vet 32
Case Study: Jane (cont.) Jane hand-delivered her resume and cover letter to the veterinarian that she knew. Jane attended interviewing workshop at One-Stop Career Center to get practice and feedback 33
Jane s 30-Day Plan Completed Case Study form 34
Points to Remember 1. It is important to begin every 30-Day plan with a Person Centered approach 2. Assign tasks to team members according to their strengths and areas of expertise 3. A 30-Day Placement plan is for anyone looking for a job Day Placement Plans can be reviewed and rewritten every 30 days until the jobseeker obtains employment and is comfortable in their new position 35
