1 Independent Independent News (ITN) The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), in partnership with the training industry, is organising free training to help local tradespeople protect themselves from deadly asbestos. The new scheme, Pledge NI, will run for 12 weeks from 7 January to 29 March In the last five years there have been more than 300 deaths in Northern Ireland due to past exposures to asbestos and this number is expected to rise. There is still a lot of asbestos material in buildings anywhere built or refurbished before the year 2000 is likely to contain asbestos. Anyone responsible for the maintenance and repair of nondomestic premises is the duty holder and has a legal duty to manage the risk from asbestos. The duty holder must inform tradesmen if asbestos is present in a building they are working on. Duty holders must make sure they have an asbestos register, and to make it available on request. HSENI continues to encourage tradespeople to ask the duty holder to see the asbestos register before they start work. Launching the training initiative, HSENI s Head of Workplace Health, Cyril Anderson, said: Everyone should avoid working with asbestos if possible. But, if you need to work with asbestos then make sure you have proper training before you start. By raising awareness of the dangers of asbestos and by promoting measures to help reduce its harmful effects, we can help protect the health of our workforce, and save lives. Pledge NI offers a great opportunity to learn more about the dangers from asbestos and follows on from HSENI s Hidden Killer and Duty to Manage awareness campaigns. 2 Independent Independent News (ITN) Hurricane Sandy: The Untold Collateral Damage Hurricane Sandy, the 1,000-mile-wide superstorm, touched ground on October 27, hitting six eastern states. During the peak of the storm, more than 8.5 million people were without power and emergency communications were silenced. Although six states were hit by Hurricane Sandy, New Jersey and New York suffered catastrophic damage for residents and business owners. Sandy is cited for the destruction of 305,000 versus the 214,700 caused by Katrina and Rita. Due to the dense nature of the impact area of Sandy resulted in 265,300 businesses being affected. This estimated cost of recovery for Hurricane Sandy is $71 billion. In New York, an estimated 10,000 to 40,000 people as displaced from their homes. City officials estimate at least 12,000 New Yorkers are trying to survive in unheated, flood-damaged homes, despite warnings that dropping temperatures could pose a health risk. In the Rockaways, NY, a resilient and inspiring community, they have endured the unimaginable. Banks, stores, medical buildings, gas stations and more were destroyed. Six weeks later, mountains of debris remains on streets and homeowners fact the daunting task of hazardous debris remediation. Mold, cold, and asbestos are on the minds of many. With the holidays a few weeks away, residents want to return safely to their homes. We re not out of danger yet, said Jordan Zevon, ADAO National Spokesperson. The storm has passed, but the danger has just begun. Our government needs to man up and help Hurricane Sandy victims now by funding toxic debris removal. Sandy debris, ADAO has been urging families and volunteers to take the following four steps: IDENTIFY: Learn where asbestos is in your home. D T TOUCH: is a human carcinogen. containing materials may release fibers when they are disturbed, damaged, removed improperly, repaired, cut, torn, sanded, sawed, drilled or scraped. TEST: Confirm the presence or absence of asbestos. REMEDIATI: If tests confirm asbestos, hire trained and accredited asbestos professionals to repair and remove the asbestos-containing materials. The collateral damage for Hurricane Sandy won t be tallied for decades. An estimated 2,600 tons of hazardous asbestos debris was removed after the Joplin, Missouri tornado in 2011, we can only imagine the health impact from Hurricane Sandy toxic debris exposures. 3 Independent Independent News (ITN) In June 2000, my husband Mick and I returned from a holiday in Corfu happy and suntanned not a care in the world. A few weeks later he developed a chest infection which was diagnosed as pleurisy and given a course of antibiotics. And therefore we were devastated when after having further tests he was told he had the asbestos related cancer- Mesothelioma a disease we had never heard of and certainly couldn t pronounce! Sadly things were to get worse as we were told there was to be no treatment cure or hope. Mick at 59years old, was given six months to live and we were told to simply go and spend quality time together. Mick had apparently been exposed to deadly asbestos fibres throughout his naval career. He had joined the Royal Navy as a young lad and as a gunner was issued with antiinflammable gauntlets and hoods, the gun turret its self was lined with asbestos. products were used throughout ships and on a number of occasions he was involved in ships going into be striped of asbestos and refitted. Although the Navy freely admitted the exposure to asbestos had been during his time spent in the navy there is no way they would be held to account. The Crown has immunity and you cannot sue the crown! No form of compensation from either the MOD or the Government for Mick and others who had simply joined the armed forces as young men and been negligently exposed to deadly asbestos fibres. Chris s Story many people and industries are ignorant of its dangers asbestos and the cancer it can cause and the fact the UK has the highest rates of death from mesothelioma of any country in the world. At a time when death rates are falling for many other cancers, the annual number deaths in the UK has nearly quadrupled in the last 30 years. I was determined Mick hadn t died in vain, so in May 2002 I launched the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund (MKMRF). Our grandchildren released 1,000 balloons in memory of their grandfather from the banks of the River Tyne. It is a small voluntarily run charity, where every single penny raised goes directly towards funding world class research and promoting a greater awareness into the disease. We operate under the umbrella of the British Lung Foundation, whose research projects are considered amongst the best in the world. MKMRF has gone on to raise over 1m to help fund four major research studies into the disease and recently we were delighted to launch the first UK, indeed the first in Europe, Mesothelioma Tissue Bank (MesobanK) which will have a huge impact on research both nationally and internationally for decades to come. We also focus on providing support for people affected by Mesothelioma and their families and have setup Mesothelioma Support Groups across Tyneside. We work tirelessly to lobby for change and made considerable advances in raising the profile of this disease. What upset me most was certainly not the money, but the fact a civilian working next to him would be eligible for compensation yet what made my husband s life worth less? I gave up work immediately Mick was diagnosed the time we had left together was too precious to waste! We spent every minute of every day together. Mick lived for seven very precious months and died on 19th March 2001 leaving me totally devastated. Those who have lost loved ones to mesothelioma can set up a Snowdrop Memorial Fund, creating a lasting legacy to a special person. All monies raised will be collected into the Mick Knighton

MKMRF is run entirely voluntarily and we are determined every single penny donated goes towards helping improve the outcome for those with Mesothelioma. The 1st quarter of 2012 took IATP to the ADAO Global Awareness Conference in LA, nine countries were represented at the conference and we are pleased to announce that IATP will be attending and presenting at the 2013 ADAO Global Awareness Conference IATP is supporting DAST: Derbyshire Support Team. As a Not for Profit Organisation 10% of our annual surplus goes to DAST. IATP is also hosting a Fundraising Industry Event on the 26/01/2013 in Derby Casino Royale The evening will comprise of a champagne entrance, 3 course dinner, an Industry Awards Ceremony recognising those who have and those who are making a difference across varied sectors with the common bond being related to asbestos. Throughout the year the Working Group and Directors have contributed massively to the development of IATP with the introduction of Task Teams to take on specific projects that benefit IATP Members. We have also developed products, car and van stickers and pin badges, taking IATP on the road!
