3 Why cloud? The development of a cloud services portfolio came as a natural evolution of infrastructure service provisioning to the national research and academic community ViMa Virtual Machines on Demand okeanos is Greek for ocean. Oceans capture, store and deliver energy, oxygen and life around the planet.

5 How it all started Need for easy, secure access to GRNET s datacenters User friendliness, simplicity Scalable to the thousands #VMs, TBs, users running within GRNET s AAI Federation Resell or build your own? IaaS cloud provider, vendor, or own infrastructure? It all depends on your needs

6 Towards a public IaaS cloud Goal: Production-quality IaaS computing cloud Current Alpha-2, beta to be released soon: >1600 VMs / >1000 users Target group: GRNET s customers direct: IT depts of connected institutions indirect: university students, researchers in academia Users manage resources over a simple, elegant UI, or a REST API, for full programmatic control

11 Use Case 1- CELAR / Cancer Research Automatic, Multi-Grained elasticity-provisioning for the cloud CELAR will deliver a fully automated and highly customizable system for elastic provisioning of resources in cloud computing platforms. Translational Cancer Detection pipeline (SCAN) Collaboration with Institute of Cancer Research London Complex application workflow High-performance requirements Focus on elasticity requirements and behavior ~okeanos will be one of the enabling platforms for elastic resource provisioning Budget: 3.47 Μ (FP7-GA-#317790) Project Start: October 2012 Duration: 36 months Project coordinator ATHENA Research and Innovation Centre in ICKT Website:

12 Use Case 2 - UberCloud / Bioinformatics Recently joined the UberCloud HPC Experiment as Resource Provider ( Overall goal is To identify, test and document potential solutions to the known roadblocks in high performance computing as a service. Support in porting a high-scalable, parallel BioInformatics application on ~okeanos Will put ~okeanos HPC capabilities into testing Scientific codes: NAMD, Gromacs, Desmond Message Passing Interface (MPI) support. Virtual HPC clusters. Collaboration with Bio Academy of Athens (User side and Samplify (Software Provider -

13 Use Case 3 - Greek Universities / On-line elections system Elections for University Management Councils Implemented for one University. Replicated on demand for numerous others around Greece Security/Confidentiality requirements Stability/Resilience Short-scheduled demands

14 Roadmap ~okeanos evolves. Target to become production level service. Aim to reuse/ redeploy the software in different environments. Released as Open source GRNET retains the role of Academic Resource provider. Will be requested to satisfy various critical applications in the future. May need to support various other public sector apps
