2 Statute Changes K.S.A and Language requiring high school graduation was deleted

3 Regulation Changes K.A.R Clinical resources Eliminates The requirement that clinical sites be approved by the board before implementation The requirement for approval by the Board for regularly scheduled observational experiences before implementation The term professional from Clinical experiences with preceptors

4 K.A.R Educational facilities Language added so current technological resources can be used in order to allow for rapid changes in the use of technology in the workplace and in education of nursing students

6 K.A.R Approval of continuing education Adds the option of a CE transcript as documentation of completion of continuing education offerings

7 ARNP Regulation Changes K.A.R Definition of expanded role; limitations, restrictions Changes the description of the relationship with physicians and other health professionals from collegial to collaborative Clarifies that each ARNP shall be authorized to make independent decisions about the advanced practice nursing needs of families and clients and medical decisions based on the authorization for collaborative practice Definitions of authorization for collaborative practice and Physician were added to this regulation

9 K.A.R Educational requirements for advanced registered nurse practitioners Adds reference to K.A.R through for the standards of a post-basic nursing education program that applicants for ARNP must meet. This will require that an applicant for certification as an ARNP in the category of midwifery who completes their education program after January 1, 2010 to hold a master s degree or higher in nursing, midwifery or related field and adds the option for either a masters or higher degree in nurse anesthesia or related field for an applicant in the category of nurse anesthetist Require each applicant who completes an advanced registered nurse practitioner program after July 1, 2009 to complete three college hours in advanced pathophysiology or its equivalent and three college hours in advanced health assessment or its equivalent

10 K.A.R Functions of the advanced registered nurse practitioner in the category of nurse practitioner New language states that the nurse practitioner shall function in an expanded role Authorized to provide health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, independent nursing diagnosis, treatment, acute and chronic disease, develop and manage the medical plan of care for each patient based on the authorization for collaborative practice Authorized to perform health care services for which the nurse practitioner is educationally prepared and for which competency has been established and maintained. Educational preparation may include academic coursework, workshops, institutes, and seminars if theory or clinical experience, or both

11 K.A.R Functions of the advanced registered nurse practitioner in the category of nurse midwife New language states that each nurse midwife shall function through the application of advanced knowledge of women s health care through the life span Authorized to provide independent nursing diagnosis, treatment, acute and chronic disease, develop and manage the medical plan of care for each patient based on the authorization for collaborative practice Authorized to perform health care services for which the nurse midwife is educationally prepared and for which competency has been established and maintained. Educational preparation may include academic coursework, workshops, institutes, and seminars if theory or clinical experience, or both

12 K.A.R Functions of the advanced registered nurse practitioner in the category of clinical nurse specialist New language states that each clinical nurse specialist shall function in an expanded role to provide evidence-based nursing practice within a specialty area focused on specific patients or clients, populations, settings and types of care Authorized to provide independent nursing diagnosis, treatment, acute and chronic disease, develop and manage the medical plan of care for each patient based on the authorization for collaborative practice, Authorized to perform health care services for which the clinical nurse specialist is educationally prepared and for which competency has been established and maintained. Educational preparation may include academic coursework, workshops, institutes, and seminars if theory or clinical experience, or both

25 The KSBN Kansas Automated Nurse Notification allows the employer or educational institution to be proactive on license verification. Subscribers to the system will be notified via whenever the status of a license changes, including renewals.

28 Kansas Nurses Assistance Program KNAP is supported by funds from the Board of Nursing Fees charged to Participants Started in late 1987 KNAP is overseen by a voluntary Board of Directors comprised of nurses who are knowledgeable about impairment Maintains about 220 in the program National average is about 13% of licenses Kansas is below the national average

29 Kansas Nurses Assistance Program Self-referrals to the program are encouraged KNAP is a confidential program Nurse stays compliant with program their name is not shared with board of nursing Referrals can be made by family, friends, employer Reporting requirements under the risk management law and KSBN regulations are satisfied by a report to KNAP
