1 Nevada President s Message By Peter Bronson May 2011 Bar Association Journal County Post Offi ce Box 1473 Nevada City, CA Thanks to all members who completed the Association s recent on-line survey. The results were interesting, and will help shape our agenda and calendar for the next year. Here are some of the highlights. There is substantial interest in formation of a litigation section. If you would like to be on an ad hoc committee to explore the possibilities, let me know. Members favor both lunch and after-work programs (decidedly not breakfast), and would like more events where they can socialize and network. Our next program will offer just such an opportunity. On May 26 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., Sacramento (and formerly Grass Valley) attorney Matthew Crider will present a timely program on Internet marketing for lawyers, at Café 141 in Grass Valley. There will be pre-program hors d oeuvres and a no-host bar, plus an hour of CLE credit. Our survey results also showed that there is great demand for programs offering CLE credits for the mandatory subjects of substance abuse, ethics, and elimination of bias. We will do our best to satisfy that demand during the coming year. Finally, the responses showed substantial support for increased involvement in community outreach. We ll work on that this year as well, and would welcome suggestions. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on May 26th. Lawyer Referral Service Contacting an attorney can be daunting. LRS callers from the phone book and internet appreciate talking to LRS staff and volunteers about their case, and finding an appropriate lawyer match. The LRS offers referrals in 18 legal subject areas, most commonly for civil litigation, family law and bankruptcy. LRS needs faster computers to keep up with increasing workload. Anyone willing to donate high-end computer towers, monitors, or wireless keyboards (nothing more than 2-3 years old) can contact the office at or send an via the website: There are also several Board positions open- you can feel good about making a difference in assuring access to justice in your legal community. GOLD COUNTRY ESTATE PLANNING COUNCIL The Gold Country Estate Planning Council meets monthly at 11:45 am 1:15 pm, every first Wednesday. Family Law Section Invitation to Comment Proposed changes to California Rules of Court as well as proposed adoption of and modification to existing Judicial Council Forms that would implement the recommendations of the Elkins Task Force are open for comment. The proposed changes can be found on the California Courts Judicial Branch Website at: www. courts.ca.gov/policyadmin-invitationstocomment.htm. There are several proposed changes. Please take an opportunity to review and comment at your earliest convenience. Note that for many proposals, the deadline for comments is June 20, Settlement Conference Calendar We are exploring the possibility of adding a settlement conference court calendar. Doing so will most likely require the participation of our section members. Please let me know if you have not already done so - (1) if you would be interested in pursuing this idea; (2) if you would be willing to act as a judge pro tem for this calendar; and (3) if you currently have the necessary training to act as a judge pro tem.
