1 PARK WEST SCHOOL DIVISION Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow Date: May 2014 Topic: Health Care Aide program proposal Attached is an overview for the Comprehensive Health Care Aide program to be offered jointly by Park West School Division and Assiniboine Community College (ACC) in Any students interested in enrolling in the program should first talk to their guidance counselor or principal. Schools will then submit names of interested students to our divisional Vocational Education Facilitator Lindsay Rubeniuk by Friday, May 30 th. Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program by Friday, June 6 th.
2 PARK WEST SCHOOL DIVISION Health Care Aide program The Comprehensive Health Care Aide is a dual credit program offered jointly by Park West School Division and Assiniboine Community College (ACC). The program will prepare students for entry level jobs in the health care field as nursing aides in hospitals, care homes as well as home care workers. Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills required to assist in caring for patients of all ages in hospitals, nursing homes, and the community. Program overview: This program allows students the benefit of completing their high school graduation and the Assiniboine Community College Health Care Aide Certificate. There are eleven ACC courses incorporated into six high school credits, two of which are work practicums in the community. The program will support an enrolment of divisional students. This ACC accredited program is offered at no cost for tuition, uniforms, or books to eligible students in Grade 11 or 12 in any Park West high school. Students are responsible only for immunizations, footwear, and a watch. The program may also be accessible to qualifying adults who are high school graduates at their cost depending on seat availability. Health Care Aide students are enrolled simultaneously in their home high school as well as at ACC. The credits earned in this program are registered at both their home high school as well as at ACC. Upon successful completion of the program, students may receive six to eight Grade 12 credits as well as the ACC Comprehensive Health Care Aide certificate which is recognized in the health care field across Manitoba. While this program is open to high school students, it should be noted that the courses are delivered at a college level by ACC and the requirements are those of a college classroom. While a high school credit may be granted if the student achieves a grade of 50% or better, the college requires a minimum of 80% to be eligible for their certificate. The college reserves the right to change its requirements as they see fit. All admissions will be done in consultation with Assiniboine Community College (ACC).
3 Objectives/Learning Outcomes: Students who complete the Comprehensive Health Care Aide program will: Understand and use the theory that forms the basis of the responsibilities of the health care aide Recognize, understand, and respect the individuality, rights, and concerns of patients Communicate effectively with patients and their families Develop helping relationships with patients and their families Provide direct care that promotes the comfort and safety of patients Promote independence, particularly with activities of daily living, within patient capabilities Detect and report changes in the physical and emotional status of patients Respond to the physical and emotional needs of patients Recognize and report concerns associated with the sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients Follow the general scientific principles associated with theoretical concepts Follow institutional policies Perform manual skills safely and effectively Perform selected home management and maintenance tasks safely and efficiently Use a problem-solving approach Organize and prioritize own workload Document on patients' records appropriately Maintain confidentiality of all patient information Communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with other health care team members Participate as a member of the health care team Demonstrate responsibility in job performance
4 Sites for program delivery: The in-class instructional component of the program will be delivered at Birtle Collegiate. Students from other Park West communities will be bussed from their home schools. The practicum placements that have been confirmed are at the hospitals in Shoal Lake and Birtle. These placements have been approved by the Prairie Mountain Health Authority. Practicum overview: While enrolled in the Comprehensive Health Care Aide program, you will have opportunities to gain experience in simulated laboratory settings in the classroom and in actual practice settings in health care agencies.
