Launched by only 7 people, NIDEK has expanded into the global business and currently offers its products in more than 120 countries. Delivering Solutions from Various Standpoints to Your Needs To treat eyes with a complicated and delicate structure, detailed examination data and accurate surgical equipment is required. Based on the long-cultivated R&D, NIDEK has created various products using the cutting edge technology such as laser and ultrasound. We also focus on achieving more efficient diagnosis by connecting equipments for surgery, diagnosis, and examination with an electronic medical record(emr). Diagnosis instruments Surgical instruments electric medical record Examination instruments Developing Various Types of Medical Equipments for Eye Care Ophthalmic care is mainly divided into 3 categories: examination, diagnosis, and treatment. NIDEK offers comprehensive solutions with the comprehensive product lineups such as excimer laser system, cataract surgery system, and fundus camera. As for the excimer laser system, NIDEK is the only Japanese manufacture approved by Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Providing a Patient-Friendly Intraocular Lens (IOL) In Japan, about 1 million patients undergo a cataract surgery each year. Cataract is a disease where the crystalline lens in the eye goes clouded. To achieve a few-millimeter insertion incision for an IOL which replaces the crystalline lens, NIDEK develops and offers surgical equipment, IOLs and surgical tools. We devise the optimum IOL shape and material to reduce postoperative complications and to shorten surgery. NIDEK's IOLs are produced in a clean room. Supporting early detection of various diseases in medical practice The fundus of the eye is the only part of the human body where the blood vessels can be observed directly. NIDEK products such as fundus cameras, non-contact tonometers and auto ref/keratometers are widely used in general health examinations to detect eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, and the signs of visceral diseases as well for eyes

We provide user friendly products to satisfy you and your customer's needs. AOS-5100 (Automatic Optometry System) for optimum lens selection requires operational space of only 180 cm x 90 cm. To Make the Glasses Design More Freely Glasses increasingly serve as not only vision correction but also as a fashion item. For more flexible designs and enjoyable glasses, NIDEK expands the range of options for glasses design by accurate processing as well as its own lens processing technology. NIDEK succeeded to create holes into lens and the complicated lens processing which had been difficult by machining processing. Our Technology Supporting Impression of Seeing and Satisfactions of Wearing ARK-1s (Auto Ref / Keratometer) measures the visual acuity mechanically. This is one of NIDEK's major products. Production R & D Sales Coating Technology Adding Much Value to Your Products For anti-reflection, transmittance/reflectance of specific wavelength, higher durability, and anti-smudge, NIDEK offers nano-level thin film coating over optical materials such as LCD, organic EL, and lens. Taking advantage of the characteristics of organic/inorganic materials, NIDEK is also developing a new coating agent. NIDEK succeeded in its original new color coating over spectacle lenses which had been regarded as impossible. We support our customers to enhance their product value by our thin film coating. The latest equipments are used for R&D. Well-Equipped Production Facilities Producing High Quality Products The NIDEK Osawa Coating Plant is one of the largest vacuum coating factories in the world. High quality coating is carried out under the clean environment. The plant is equipped with a massive production system, enabling 24-hour efficient production. 7 Visual Prosthesis Challenge for the Recovery of the Lost Vision NIDEK established the first vision institute for Visual Prosthesis in Japan in 2001 to realize the dream since its foundation: Invisible to Visible. Applying the long-cultivated Optoelectronics to advanced medical engineering, we promote R&D to restore vision for the visually impaired as early as possible. The First Vision Institute for Visual Prosthesis in Japan Visual Prosthesis is an artificial sense organ which restores vision by electrically stimulating the nerve system via implanted stimulation electrodes. The Vision Institute is committed to R&D with the goal of restoring vision for the visually impaired who were sighted in the past. The first milestone is light perception, and the further one spatial recognition. NIDEK's First National Project NIDEK has been selected by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, Japan) to be part of, and promote, a 5-year contract research project R&D for Visual Prosthesis, which started in (*1) NIDEK has continued the research from 2006 to 2007 with the newly received subsidy. This project has been carried out as a joint effort of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Clinical research is being conducted under the direction of Osaka University. *1: The basic research has been conducted with the following research institutions and NIDEK. 1) Nara Institute of Science and Technology 2) Kyushu University NIDEK's Approach for the Visual Prosthesis (STS approach) Our project team has developed the Japan's original approach to stimulating retina: Suprachoroidal- Transretinal Stimulation (STS). In this approach, stimulation electrodes are placed into the pocket made by incising the scleral space, and stimulate the retina without direct contact with it. This approach allows less damage to the retina during the implantation than other approaches. Our STS approach's feasibility has been gradually demonstrated by various experiments. After acute clinical trials (*2) were performed at Osaka University, our project is currently working on the system development for longer-term implantation. In 2010, the semi-chronic clinical trials (*3) were performed in blind patients with retinitis pigmentosa under Osaka University's initiative. *2: Clinical trial performed in an operating room to apply electrical stimulation to a patient for only a short time (about few hours) using the system. *3: Clinical trial to implant the system in the human body for longer periods (about one month). Social Contribution Providing the Joy of Learning to Children around the World A Nepalese engineer, who had received service training at NIDEK, wrote to NIDEK about the children who cannot go to school. Inspired by this letter, NIDEK provided a fund for establishing a school. NIDEK also donated visual acuity meter to Gamagori, its hometown, as a token of our appreciation, and for children. Through such volunteer activities, NIDEK continues to make social commitments. Joining the Special Olympics Nippon In 2008 Special Olympics Nippon National Winter Games Yamagata, a sports event for the mentally disabled in Japan, NIDEK lent its products including diagnostic and lens edging equipments voluntarily. NIDEK employees also joined in this event as volunteer staff. Donation and sponsorship on the 40th anniversary We donated the optometer to Gamagori City Health Center and blood transfusion stands to Gamagori municipal hospital. Moreover, we sponsored Japanese Association for Disabled Sailing and a lecture of security against water accident for elderly school students on the 40th anniversary. Efforts in Quality Assurance Activities NIDEK has been awarded the ISO 9001/ ISO Quality Systems Model for development, production, and distribution. We are proud to have received this international recognition to our company-wide quality control system, in spite of having different lines of products and services in various fields. For the Precious Earth Environment NIDEK has obtained Certificate of Registration for the ISO Environmental Management System for all domestic production bases.
