1 Perry D. Hoffman, Ph.D. BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER: IF ONLY WE HAD KNOWN Extended Abstract: Over the past two decades the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) has received increasing attention from researchers and clinicians. While still debated because of the paucity of surveys to determine prevalence, the frequency of the disorder in the general population is now estimated to be more than 5%.Ten percent of BPD patients eventually suicide making BPD a serious health challenge. While no data exist on the prevalence in the Orthodox community, those knowledgeable about the disorder can attest to it presence and to the level of suffering that result from its symptoms both for the sufferer and for their families. Unfortunately, awareness of the disorder severely lags behind other mental illnesses. Similarly, treatment options are often a mystery. This presentation will orient the workshop attendees to the constellation of BPD symptoms, its co-occurring illnesses that complicate recovery, update the current research as well the research-based treatment that is considered to be the state-of-the-art, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In addition, some video clips from the recently released series called If Only We Had Known will be shown. Brief Abstract: This presentation on borderline personality disorder focuses on its symptoms, co-occurring illnesses complicating recovery, current research as well the treatment considered to be the state-of-the-art, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In addition, some video clips from the recently released series called If Only We Had Known will be shown. Objectives: 1.
