General Safety Rules Warning! Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below, may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious personal injury. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 1. Work Area Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control 2. Electrical Safety Grounded tools must be plugged into an outlet properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. Never remove the grounding prong or modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs. Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. If the tools should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded. Don t expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tools or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked W-A or W. These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock. 3. Personal Safety Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose cloths, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on invites accidents. Do no overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. 4. Tool Use and Care Use clamps or other practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control. Do not force tool, Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. PJ1400 Manual 09/04 3

Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventative safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool s operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool, may become hazardous when used on another tool. 5. Service Tool service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injury. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance instructions may create a risk of electric shock or injury. Specific Safety Rules Pump: PJ-1400 Remove shipping plug on topside of pump and replace with vented plug. This is very important to the proper operation of the pump. Do not store or run the pump upside down or on its side, since pump oil can run out of the vent plug. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Protection: These drain cleaners are provided with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) built into the power supply cord. This device provides additional protection from the risk of electric shock. Should replacement of the plug or cord become necessary, use only identical replacement parts that include GFCI protection. Extension Cords: Use only 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong grounding-type plugs and 3-pole cord connectors that accept the plug from the product. Use only extension cords that are intended for outdoor use. These extension cords are identified by a marking, Acceptable for use with outdoor appliances; store indoors while not in use. Use only extension cords having an electrical rating not less than the rating of the products. Do not use damaged extension cords. Examine extension cord before using and replace if damaged. Do not abuse extension cord and do not yank on any cord disconnect. Keep cord away from heat and sharp edges. Always disconnect the extension cord from the receptacle before disconnecting the product from the extension cord. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electrocution, keep all connections dry and off the ground. Do not touch plug with wet hand. Wear proper clothing: Protect yourself! Wear rubber gloves, rubber boots. Wear eye and face protection, goggles or face shield. Sewers and drains are bacteria laden environments. Protect yourself PJ1400 Manual 09/04 4

from direct skin contact with the contaminants found in this environment. Remember that water pressure in a clogged line can send these contaminants back toward you, so, again, protect yourself. Cover up any skin abrasions cuts, scratches, welts before beginning work. Environment: Use caution in confined or wet areas. Since you will often be working directly through clean outs or openings into sewers (non-trapped opening) make sure that there is adequate ventilation into the work area. Do not operate machine in areas where flammable gases or liquids are present. Check with your local water utility to see if a backflow preventer is required. Always insert hose and nozzle at least 3 feet into pipe opening before turning machine on: Insert hose and nozzle into pipe and hold onto hose before turning machine on. Changing hoses and/or nozzles: ALWAYS turn machine off when changing nozzles, hoses or reels. Never hold onto nozzle or point it at anyone with machine turned on. High pressure water streams can cause serious bodily injury. Job Completion: Always turn machine off before disconnecting water supply. Running a water pump dry will seriously damage the water pump. Maintenance: Keep machine clean and dry to maximize performance and longevity. Follow maintenance schedules such as changing oil, check for weak spots, slices or cuts in hose, keep inlet screen clean, replace nozzles when worn. Keep antifreeze in hose & pump when storing in freezing temperatures. Additional maintenance details follow in this manual. Functional Description The Jetting Process Water jetting also known as sewer jetting or hydro jetting is the process of cleaning debris out of drain and/or sewer lines using a combination of water pressure and water flow through a hose and nozzle. Water jetting is used to wash out clogs, potential blockages or to simply clean the walls of drains and sewer lines to maximize drainage. Sewer jetting differs from normal pressure washing in two ways: 1. Sewer jet nozzles direct the flow of water back toward the operator at a 20 to 45 degree angle. This backward stream propels the sewer line and also cleans the walls of the sewer. 2. Water pumps on sewer jetting equipment are modified to allow pulsation of water through the hose to the nozzle. This pulsation creates a vibration or wiggle in the jetting hose that allows the hose to move through a drain or sewer line with little resistance. Pulsating also reduces pressure and/or flow of the water, so most pumps are equipped to turn pulsation on and off at will. Sewer jetting differs from traditional snaking (using mechanical spring-wound cable with blade attached) in that jetting is most effectively done from the LOW end of a clogged drain or sewer. Traditionally, clogged pipes were opened from the high side using the aid of gravity and the downward flow of water to clean. In the water jetting process, cleaning from the low side allows the operator to both see debris coming downward and to take advantage of the water pressure and flow that is pointing PJ1400 Manual 09/04 5

toward the low end if cleaning from the low side. PLEASE NOTE that it is often not practical or even possible to clean from the low side of a drain or sewer line. Jetting is still effective from the high side. Operation Pre Operation Checklist Check for adequate water supply. Use no smaller than 5/8 garden hose for supply to pump. Make sure water inlet filter is clean Check ground fault interrupter. Test & retest. Check fluid level: Oil in pump PJ-1400 Select nozzle and make sure orifices are not blocked or worn to excess Check hose for wear or kinks Check hose reel and all connections Operating Instructions 1. Attach garden hose (minimum of 5/8 diameter) to the water faucet. Run water through the hose into an open drain or bucket to flush debris out of faucet & hose before connecting to pump. Shut water off again when water runs clear. 2. Attach garden hose to water inlet valve at pump. 3. Connect jetter hose to reel. 4. Attach nozzle to end of hose. Finger tighten plus ½ turn with a wrench. Do not over tighten. 5. Mark the hose approximately 5 to 6 feet back from nozzle with electrical tape. Use this tape as a marker to shut off machine before retrieving all the line out of the drainpipe. 6. Open water inlet. PJ1400 Manual 09/04 6

7. Open water faucet again to prime pump. An equal amount of water should pass through the orifices of the nozzle. 8. Push jetter hose into drain up to the marker when possible (minimally several feet). 9. Make sure your extension cord is plugged into a properly grounded 110-volt receptacle. 10. Start the motor, make sure motor is plugged into a properly grounded outlet, and start jetter motor by flipping switch into the on position. 11. Adjust pressure on PJ-1400 with pressure regulator knob, turning right to increase pressure, left to decrease. Do not exceed 1400 psi. 12. Start jetting, using pulsation only if needed to promote forward motion of nozzle & hose. 13. PJ-1400 when you arrive at an obstruction, activate the pulsation by turning handle clockwise, if you are not able to pass obstruction, push and pull hose in a very short and sharp stroke (and twist) to get thru the obstruction. Once you get through turn handle counterclockwise to enable pump again. 14. PJ-600 is in pulsation at all times during operation. Helpful Hints: Tight bends and certain blockages are often more easily negotiated by rotating or twisting jetter hose at drain opening. Once you are through that area, pull back and pass through several times to ensure cleaning. Once you have opened the blockage(s), pull hose back very slowly to provide maximum cleaning to walls of pipe. Shutting Down 1. When completing pass through drain watch for tape marker on hose at pipe entrance. 2. Reduce pressure gradually with pressure regulator knob until pressure gauge is at zero. 3. Stop the jetter motor 4. Continue to run water through pump & hose for 30 to 60 seconds. 5. Close water faucet and disconnect garden hose from faucet. 6. Close water inlet valve. Disconnect garden hose from jetter. 7. Pull remaining jetter hose from drain line. 8. Remove nozzle if you choose. 9. Store jetter hose properly on reel or in a coil to avoid damage to hose. Grease & Ice Blockages Warm water is effective in cleaning grease and ice blockages. A cold-hot mix from the tap is adequate. However, do not exceed 145 F (63 C). Hotter water can damage seals in your pump. PJ1400 Manual 09/04 7

Care tips Never let pump run dry!!! Pump cavitation can occur in only a few seconds of running dry. Avoid running anything abrasive through pump. Abrasive materials will damage pump components resulting in total malfunction or, minimally, loss of pressure capability. Anti Freeze Procedure: If you know there will be a period of several days when the jetter will be idle or if the jetter is stored in potentially freezing weather, make sure to run antifreeze into pump and hose as part of your shut down procedure. Simply insert a short length of garden hose into a gallon of antifreeze, turn on pump and run until you see antifreeze coming out of the nozzle end of the hose. At next use of jetter, you can recover most of that antifreeze when you hook up to your water source. Antifreeze can be used multiple times. However if it gets too diluted (more than 50% water) or if there is any discoloration, discard that antifreeze and replace with new. Be careful with jetter hose against sharp edges. Sharp edges can scrap, slice and generally damage hose quickly. While hose is easily replaced, it pays to take care by buffering sharp edges with tape, cardboard, etc., to maximize its useful life. Do not use the Pulse-Abler more than necessary. PJ-1400 device is what enables high-pressure cleaning through multiple turns in sink and sewer lines. However, the Pulse-Abler also creates extreme vibration and faster wear on the pump. So use as needed, but do not use if a blockage or sewer line configuration does not require it. Maintenance Pump: 1. Periodically change oil in pump, PJ-1400 & PJ-600 (remove cover to check and change) First break in oil change after 30 Hours of use. Change every six months or approximately 250 hours of use thereafter Recommended oil: SAE 30W Non-detergent 2. Do NOT run pump without water. This can damage the cylinder walls, warp or crack the pump casing. 3. Do not use water more than 145 F (63 C). This will cause seal degradation. Your pump is equipped with a thermal relief valve. However, to optimize pump protection you should still avoid water (or any pumped fluid) that is too hot on the inlet side. 4. NEVER run pump if there is ice in pump or outlet hose. To avoid freezing in the pump, run antifreeze through pump and hose(s) if stored overnight in freezing temperature. (The same bottle of antifreeze can be recycled numerous time. If it becomes discolored or diluted, replace with new.) Best Care: If the jetting unit will be unused for a period of time (more than several days), even in warm temperatures, we recommend running antifreeze through pump and hose before storage. Antifreeze greatly reduces the chance of rust, mineral deposits and other contaminants damaging the pump during storage. PJ1400 Manual 09/04 8

Accessories Hoses & Nozzles: Your hydro jetter works via the proper blend of water pressure and water volume: the more water that has to pass through the restriction of a hose, the less pressure you will have at the nozzle end. To optimize cleaning power, use the shortest hose with the largest inside diameter that you can. The orifices (holes) in the nozzle affect pressure. Over time, water pressure will wear the orifices in your nozzle. A worn nozzle can result in pressure drop and reduce the effectiveness of your cleaning. Nozzles need to be replaced periodically as normal wear occurs. 12 Additional Components: 1. Pulse-abler (PJ-1400) The stem and handle extending from one cylinder of the water pump enables pulsation of the water stream through the hose & nozzle. By turning the pulse-abler handle clockwise (or right), you temporarily disable one valve of the pump. This creates pulsation or vibration in the hose, allowing the hose to wiggle through tight bends quickly and easily. Turn the pulse-abler handle left again to enable the pump again. Note: Disabling a valve also reduces cleaning power, so use the pulsation only as needed to arrive at an obstruction or to retrieve a stuck hose. When you arrive at an obstruction activate the pusation by turning handle clockwise, if you are not able to pass obstruction, push and pull hose in a very short and sharp stroke to get through the obstruction. Once you get through turn handle counterclockwise to enable pump again. 2. Pressure Regulator/Unloader (PJ-1400) The regulator/unloader both regulates the pressure and relieves pressure on the pump while in bypass. The regulator knob is located at the pump. It allows you to adjust pressure during operation. Regulation is needed because greater pressure requires more power (meaning amperage in electric models) from the power source. Therefore you should start the electric units with as little pressure as possible. This reduces the load on the motors at startup and avoids tripping circuit breakers. After startup, gradually increase pressure to 1400 p.s.i. maximum 3. Water Inlet & Filter The water inlet has a filter to ensure that harmful debris does not run through your pump. You should always run water from your water source through the garden hose that feeds the pump before attaching the source hose to the pump. Make sure that water is running clean and clear through the garden hose before attaching to pump. Recheck the inlet filter before each use to make sure there is no obstruction.
