2 !!!!WELCOME!!!!! As August turns to September we return to nursing school looking forward to what lies in store for us in the coming school year. Some of us will taking the first steps into our nursing educations, while others of us will soon be making the much anticipated jump into the world of the Registered Nurse. To our new and seasoned CSU nursing student family, we wish the coming school year to be filled with fun and friends, long hours and, of course, hard work. We wish you the tools you need to succeed, and the resources to beat the inevitable nursing school stress. From the Georgia Student Nurses Association Board of Directors, we wish you a fabulous return to school and a warm welcome back. ~Christina Roscoe CSU SNA 1st Vice President/Editor MEET THE Board Members Tammy Green-President Christina Roscoe 1st Vice President Sheyla Desir 2nd Vice President Amanda Small Secretary Latasha Ivey BTN Director Emoshoke Bianca Braimah-Webmaster Kimberly Burlaugh Treasurer Page 2 SNA TIMES
3 Message from the President Dear Nursing Students, I would like to welcome you to the new school year. While some of you are beginning a journey, others are completing the trip. Despite traveling at different times, we are all heading toward a common destination.. A Career In Nursing. SNA gives us the opportunity to celebrate common goals as we give back to our community. It also serves to advance your career in the following ways: 1) prepares students for professional nursing organizations; 2) acts as a political platform where students can effect social change; 3) allows students to network with community through volunteer events. I would be delighted if members take advantage of all SNA has to offer therefore working toward A Career In Nursing. Working to serve fellow nursing students Tammy Green SNA President Student Experience: Summer Extern Meet the Faculty By: Amanda Small SNA Secretary/1st Semester Senior My summer extern experience: Summer is a great time to take a break from the stress and demands of nursing school. However, an externship during your time off can be very beneficial and lots of fun! Many students teeter-totter as to whether or not they want to work during the summer or take the time to completely relax. Here are some things that I think make an externship worth doing: 1) it is usually for a brief period of time (6-9 weeks), 2) it helps reinforce the knowledge you have gained thus far in school, 3) it allows you to explore areas of interest to see if they are a right fit for you, 4) you may be able to see or experience an area of practice that is not available to you during your school clinicals, 5) you get to "try out" a hospital and work environment, and 6) it allows you to get a feel for the "real world." I was fortunate to get selected for a Piedmont Hospital critical care externship this past summer. My experience there was invaluable to me. I was able to work in a different critical care area each week... including ER. It benefited me in several ways: 1) it confirmed that ICU is the right work environment for me, 2) it exposed me to areas that I thought I would not enjoy... but DID, and 3) it showed me that ER is NOT for me. I had a great experience and enjoyed everyone that I worked with. Welcome to the new faculty that has the CSU nursing family this fall. Dr. Julia Spinolo teaching in HIT II, Interactive Communications, and the online Communication with Families Ms. Carol MacKusick teaching in HIT III, pathophysiology, and the online AIDS course Ms. Marilyn Story teaching in DT I and the online Nutrition course Ms. Joyce Beeks-Cook teaching in Health Assessment, HIT III clinical, and the online AIDS course Ms. Dee Tanner teaching in Health promotion and HIT I, and Health Assessment Please take the time welcome our new professors. So if you are thinking about doing a summer externship this coming year, I highly recommend it! Get out there and see what awaits you and try an area on. What you think you might want may turn out to be all wrong for you or you may discover a new area that you weren't aware of. It is a lot of fun and they pay you! New & Season Faculty!!!!!! Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3
4 Community Corner The definition of a volunteer means literally one who donates of themselves freely and willingly without the expectation of reward. One of the greatest tools we have as nurses is the giving of self. It is just as important to gain experience in working with others and the community as it is in a clinical setting. 5 Tips for Success for CSU SNA 6th Annual Job Fair Your success at the Job Fair depends on how well you have prepared and on how well you communicate your interests and abilities to recruiters. When you are there ask questions, take business cards, and then follow-up with employers after the event. Most Common Mistakes made at Job Fairs Each year thousands of job seekers go to job fairs throughout the country searching for jobs, meeting hiring personnel and passing out resumes. But many of them are not successful. The following are the most common mistakes made by career fair attendees. Apply the advice with each mistake to benefit most from the career fair experience. Inappropriate dress. Since a career fair provides the opportunity for one-on-one dialogue with company recruiters, you should dress professionally and conservatively. Failure to do background research on participating companies. If you don't know anything about a company you approach, you won't impress the recruiter. Running out of resumes. Don't forget to bring enough resumes so you can leave one with each company recruiter you visit. Not having a plan of attack. Before entering the career fair, make a list of the companies you'd like to approach. Since your time with each company might be limited, know ahead of time which ones you'd like to talk to the most and visit those companies first. Failure to show expertise and knowledge of an industry. Your chances of being hired in a particular field won't be very good unless you can show you belong in it. Use the language of the industry and relate your past experiences to the job you're seeking. Failing to show enthusiasm. If you appear as though you are apathetic or just browsing through the career fair instead of seriously looking to land a job, you won't impress the recruiter. Give each recruiter an idea about your enthusiasm for their work and industry. Behaving too casually with the company recruiter. Don't lose your guard because of the hustle and bustle of your surroundings. You should use the same formality and respect you would use at a regular interview in your conversation with the recruiter. Remember this is an interview - treat it as one. Failing to get the correctly spelled name of a hiring manager you've visited. If you've just spent 20 minutes talking to a recruiter, that person is a good company contact for you. Be sure to get his or her name right so you won't have to send things blindly to the company. See for more tips.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!good LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6 SNA Times Words of Wisdom!! When things go wrong as they sometimes will. When the road you re trudging seems all up hill. When funds are low and the debts are high. And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit. Rest, if you must, but don t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. We re on the Web! studentorg.clayton.edu/sna/ default.html Others Sites of Interest: And many a failure turns about. When he might have won had he stuck it out: Don t give up though the pace seems slow You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out The silver tint of the clouds of doubt And you never can tell how close you are. It may be near when it seems so far: So stick to the fight when you re hardest hit It s when things seem worst that you must not quit. - Author unknown Editor Corner!! Please feel free to share it with me. This is our newsletter and I want it to reflect the wants and needs of all the College of Nursing students. -Christina Roscoe csu34774@mail.claytonstate.net NCLEX Answer & Rationale 4 Rationale: The normal magnesium level is 1.6 to 2.6 mg/dl. A client with a magnesium level of 3.5 mg/dl is experiencing hypomagnesaemia. Assessment signs/symptoms include neurological depression, drowsiness and lethargy, loss of deep tendon reflexes, respiratory insufficiency, bradycardia, and hypotension. Tetany, twitches, and a positive Trousseau's sign are seen in a client with hypomagnesaemia. 1 Rationale: The normal ph is 7.35 to The normal PCO 2 is 35 to 45 mm Hg. In respiratory acidosis the ph is low and the PCO 2 is elevated. This is an expected finding in a client with a neuromuscular disorder such as Guillian-Barré syndrome because the client may retain carbon dioxide because of ventilatory failure as paralysis ensues.
