2 Ahfad University and Trauma AUW serve more than 1,500 students coming from Darfur, Blue Nile; in addition to students from Southern Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia. AUW offer counseling service since 1997 through the guidance office Since 1964 AUW graduates professional psychologist and since 1995 specialized counselors

5 Vision The ATTTC aspires to become a leading center in providing comprehensive trauma counseling, therapy and training to individuals and communities at national and international levels.

6 Mission To help individuals, families and communities to recover from the trauma consequences and strengthen their resilience using Free cultural sensitive therapeutic approaches. To develop the capacities of multidisciplinary teams required.

9 1. Treatment Approaches The ATTTC offers mental health treatment following international guidelines ICD10 and DSM IV

10 What Is New in ATTTC Counselling Approaches The approaches of any interventions with individuals and families are to observe the totality of the survivors. And motivate individual to strengthen their resilience NOT TO VICTMIZE THE VICTIM

11 Treatment Interventions include Psychiatric treatment Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Narrative Emotive Therapy Family Therapy Group Counselling Psychosocial Support Play therapy for children

12 Psychometrics Assessment The ATTTC uses standardized psychological tests and batteries Harvard Trauma Questionnaire Hopkins Symptoms Checklist Resilience Scale General Health Questionnaire Beck depression scale Latest DSM-IV recommendations

13 Play Therapy for Children 10 therapist received training by Essex University in the use of play therapy with children

15 The ATTTC has conducted several community public lectures, seminars and exhibition. in Schools, Antenatal health clinic, Family Child Protection Unit and 10 rural villages

17 The ATTTC started with intensive TOT in trauma counselling and GBV in collaboration with the War Trauma Foundation (Netherlands)

18 Trainings offered to partners Psychosocial Support to GBV Survivors offered to two Partners NGOs: trainees from Darfur, Gadrif, White Nile and Kordfan Psychological first Aid in Disaster offered to MoH and partners in Khartoum, Blue Nile, South Kordfan and Darfu Trauma Counselling offered to psychologists working with traumatized individuals

20 Psychosocial Support for GBV Survivors Objectives What is GBV to identify traumatizing events particularly affecting women Identify the risk and protective factors in connection GBV Identify mechanisms to assist survivors of GBV. 120 male and female professionals from NGOs, media and governmental agencies have received 4 trainings in PS for GBV

25 Who works in the centre من يعمل بالمركز The services are provided by professional team in three levels Initial Assessment The clients are met by psychologist who undertake initial assessment of client s needs

26 Second level A: both clinical interventions and counselling services are provided by a PhD holder consultant psychologists Second level B: service are provided by consultant psychiatrists and registrar Second level C: consultant paediatric psychiatrist and child psychologist

29 Referral Referral of clients to and from ATTTC occurred between family and child protection unit, gynaecologists and Alfanar centre

30 Referral التحويل However the refer chain is compromised with fees in some of the referred agencies unclear feedback and handling of referred cases complicated legal system and lack of support in cases of rape and domestic violence. lack of directory of NGOs and agencies working in trauma and psychosocial support

31 ATTTC Future Plans The ATTTC aims to reach and cover more geographical areas of individuals, families and communities affected by violence Promote the training packages to relevant professional and institutions

32 To become community accessible especially to vulnerable women (Survivors ID membership) Increase the level of infrastructure to accommodate women recreational centre (e.g. walking track) To promote the multidisciplinary intervention (Psycho-socio- economical) approach to include economical support (e.g. SLIC) especially to GBV survivors
