Skin protection may speed wound healing and reduce dressing change time and discomfort by maintaining a healthy dry interface resistant to adhesives, moisture, friction and shear. Medical Skin Protection goes beyond the wound bed to insure skin surrounding the wound maintains its best possible condition while providing an environment conducive to repair of previously damaged areas. Medical Skin Protection helps maintain the progress you have made towards improving wound and incontinence management and removes barriers to skin and wound healing.
4 Understanding threats to the skin s integrity. The skin is the body s largest organ. Skin regulates temperature, provides sensation, regulates transdermal water loss and provides the barrier between us and the many threats in the external environment. To help maintain healthy function skin requires protection from exudate, incontinence, friction and shear that can break down its natural protective ability. Elderly patients are especially susceptible to external skin stressors including skin stripping from adhesive dressing removal as elderly skin may lose cohesion and become increasingly dry and fragile. Intact peri-wound skin Risk factors impacting skin at risk: External wound exudate Internal urinary or fecal incontinence removal of adhesive dressings friction and shear digestive fluids (ostomy) age nutrition status hydration status ambulatory status systemic disease (diabetes, vascular disease) Maceration when the skin s barrier function fails. Over hydration can lead to maceration of the skin including periwound skin and wound margins that can lead to the development or enlargement of wounds. Maceration reduces the skin s ability to resist damage from friction, shear, adhesive dressing removal or continuing damage from incontinence or exudate. Macerated wound margins

It provides a long lasting protective barrier film that shields at risk skin from external factors working against skin and wound healing wherever they may be present. From mechanical stressors such as friction, shear and dressing removal to chemical factors such as exudate and incontinence, skin remains protected and free from irritants.
