1 College of Humanities and Social Sciences SYLLABUS: SULTANS, EUNUCHS AND HAREMS: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE MIND : IDEAS IN CONFLICT Summer Semester, 2015 May 4-June 15, 2015 Dr. George H. Junne, Jr. COURSE DESCRIPTION: An examination of the conflicts between sets of ideas in modern times in both the West and the Third World. UNC Catalog This course will examine some of the social, cultural and political histories of the Ottoman Empire, from its origins in the 13 th century as a Turcoman principality until its end following World War 1. Centered in Asia Minor, this sultanate became the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. The geographical area it encompassed over time included North Africa from Egypt to Morocco, the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, southern Europe into Austria, and lands surrounding the Black Sea that comprise parts of current-day Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. The Empire s gradual decline saw the loss of Libya and Kuwait in the early 1900s and most of its European territories in The rise of the Young Turks and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk saw the start of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, The fact that the Ottoman Empire was disliked quite often hated by both the Western powers that dismantled it and the new states that replaced it (including the Republic of Turkey) has removed most traces of its past glory from collective memory. Yet, in its time the Ottomans were one of the most dynamic forces in the world and managed to administer an amazingly large part of the world. Moreover, their empire was far from backward or conservative during much of its existence. Its achievements were impressive and its strengths awesome, as evidenced by the very fact that it lasted for well over six centuries, longer than most other empires.

2 In fact, early modern European and Middle Eastern history cannot be understood in isolation from the history of the Ottoman Empire. 1 The course will also examine some of the diverse populations that comprised this sultanate that included not only Muslims (primarily Sunnis as well as Shiites and Sufis) but also Jews, Catholics, Africans, Circassians, Greek Orthodox, Armenians, Arabs, Macedonians, Turks, Serbians, Bulgarian Orthodox, Kurds and a host of others. Sultans ruled the Empire from its capital at Constantinople and its House of Felicity, the Inner Palace of the Topkapı Palace. That isolated inner sanctum, guarded by African eunuch slaves who also amassed significant power, was the seat of government. From 1566 until 1723 was The Sultanate of Women era when the sultans wives and mothers ruled the Empire from their apartments in the Harem. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The students will obtain a well-rounded, general understanding of aspects the Ottoman Empire from its beginnings until the rise of the Republic of Turkey. Because of the numerous published books and articles on the subject plus thousands of un-translated documents in Ottoman archives, the amount of extant material is immense. Therefore, the course will cover a wide-range of cultural, artistic, social, architectural, religious and political topics. Students will also gain insight on how interactions of various factors and factions in Anatolia were able to create and rule a formidable European, African and Middle Eastern empire. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Attendance and participation in class discussions and projects are required for all students. There will also be two mandatory sessions before traveling to Turkey. Rude behavior towards other students, members of the tour, ARAMFO, or Turkish nationals will not be tolerated! Papers and other assignments will be presented by . Students will also keep a daily journal as stipulated, which will be submitted online at the end of the semester. TERM PAPER: A twelve-page research paper (less bibliography or works cited page[s]) will be required and will be due after return. The topic will be of your own choosing, with consultation with me, and we will develop the topic over the course of the semester. An abstract with an attached annotated bibliography is due by the middle of the second week. The paper will have a bibliography or 1 Selcuk Aksin Somel.
