2 AMSTERDAM UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) has seven schools: School of Design and Communication School of Economics and Management School of Education School of Health Professions School of Social Work and Law School of Sports and Nutrition School of Technology GENERAL INFORMATION With more than 80 Bachelor s programmes, over 43,000 students and 3,200 employees, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) is one of the largest institutes for higher education in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences provides its students with professional and innovative education with an international focus. The University s educational programmes are competence-oriented. The main focus of the education is on training students to become successful professionals with the best possible know-how, attitudes and skills. From the very start of their studies, students work both independently and in groups on practical cases or assignments for companies, and they also undertake internships. AMSTERDAM The City of Amsterdam provides the perfect setting for the University of Applied Sciences. An international city with a cosmopolitan culture, Amsterdam also offers world-famous cultural attractions, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rembrandt House Museum. Moreover, Amsterdam is an internationally recognized knowledge centre that hosts a wide range of educational organizations. COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM The collaboration with the University of Amsterdam creates opportunities for our students to deepen and broaden the scope of their studies. The University of Applied Sciences and the University have a shared Board of Directors, and there is close collaboration in many fields. Every student has the option of obtaining a Master s degree by taking a special pre-master s programme at the University of Amsterdam, and some selected students can transfer directly to a Master s programme.

4 SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK AND LAW The School of Social Work and Law has a long history. The first School of Social Work in the world was founded in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. As a result, Social Work is truly embedded in the city s society and traditions. In addition to Social Work, the School of Social Work and Law offers Bachelor s programmes in Legal Studies and Applied Psychology. Both programmes were developed in close consultation with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. STUDY PROGRAMMES The School of Social Work and Law offers seven Bachelor s programmes for Dutchspeaking students: Social Work and Community Services Cultural and Social Education Social Educational Care Work Legal Studies Social Legal Studies Applied Psychology Public Management The School of Social Work and Law has developed three Master s programmes: Master s in Social Work Master s in Legal Management Master s in Urban Management There is an annual intake of nearly 2,000 Bachelor s and Master s students. The School of Social Work and Law is situated in two easily accessible locations in Amsterdam, close to public transport. The buildings of the Amstelcampus have good facilities and provide more than enough space for students to attend classes, study and work on assignments, either individually or in groups.

5 RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE FOR SOCIETY AND LAW The Research and Development Centre for Society and Law develops knowledge and expertise in close cooperation with educational organizations and professional practice. The centre devises solutions to the problems facing professional practice and society. The expertise that is developed is used to improve the Bachelor s and Master s degree programmes, so that they remain optimally linked to the issues affecting professional practice. The development of knowledge and expertise contributes to the body of knowledge in the different research areas. The Research and Development Centre develops knowledge and expertise in three research areas: Social Work Legal Management Urban Management Examples of our current research programmes are: Community Care Legal Management Outreach Work and Innovation Youth Spot (research and training centre for young people and youth work) AN INTERNATIONAL FOCUS The School of Social Work and Law aims to build and maintain an international network of Universities (of Applied Sciences) in Europe and in the countries from which many of our students originate, such as Surinam, the former Netherlands Antilles, Morocco and Turkey. This network enables the educational and research mobility of our students and lecturers. INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS AND NETWORKS The School of Social Work and Law participates in several international networks and collaborates with many international partner universities. 6 SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK AND LAW: INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES The School of Social Work and Law offers the following programmes in English. In all courses both Dutch and international students participate. 30 EC programme in International Social Development (Sept-Jan) This programme prepares students to work as an international social worker in Non-Western countries. 30 EC programme in Social Work and Law: Human Rights and Civil Society (Feb-June) This programme introduces students to processes and developments in the fields of social work and law and their interconnectedness. 30 EC Legal Programme: Working in an International Legal Environment (Sept-Jan) This programme is suited for students who are going to work in the legal departments of national organizations or companies with international ties, governmental bodies or local governments. 30 EC programme: Diversity in Urban Areas (Sept-Jan) This programme addresses the important assignment or mission of social workers in this postmodern globalised society to find ways of diminishing the polarisation and withdrawal process by taking on the problems and challenges that affect vulnerable groups. Topics discussed include: poverty, coping strategies, stimulating social cohesion and strengthening civil society. Limited number of internships Almost all internships require a good basic knowledge of the Dutch language. STUDENT FACILITIES Students who apply before the deadline, will be offered a room.
