The Foundation of 'Elimu Mount Elgon' Home for special needs under construction (2012) The Foundation of Elimu Mount Elgon is a non-profit organization with aiming to offer financial and material assistance to projects that support the education and professional training in the Mount Elgon Region, Kwanza District, in Kenya. In 2001 the present chairman of the foundation Mrs. Anke Diepenhorst first went to Kenya to train medical staff on the use of an ultrasound machine at the medical clinic of Dr. Bea Andersen. The clinic was located in a remote area without any infrastructure, on the Ugandan border, 40 km from Kitale. Besides her small, bustling clinic, Bea also headed a primary school which was set up by her in Dr. Andersen and her husband Bob Andersen run a flower farm in this area as well employing 900 people. The Andersen family has been on this farm since 1922 growing coffee, maize and later avocados, apples and peaches.
The Farm at the slopes of Mount Elgon A small nursery school and a primary school were started in 1998 with 2 classrooms. The school is now complete with 3 ECD classes and 8 primary school classes. Over 800 children have been enrolled in the school. There is also a unit for children with learning disabilities with 20 children. With support from donors in the Netherlands through the foundation Elimu Mount Elgon Andersen Primary School has been developed into a well respected learning institution in the District. For the last 5 years the school has performed very well in the national exams always positioned among the top ten out of nearly 300 schools. Apart from the Andersen Schools the foundation is also involved in the development of other government schools in the District and supports individual students at tertiary training level. Our non-profit organization goes along with the goal of the UN millennium: "All children will go to school before 2015" Below you find a list of the projects which have been undertaken by our foundation since 2001: The Andersen Nursery and Primary School. In the neighboring village of Chepchoina the building of 2 ECD classrooms and furniture for the Chepchoina Nursery and Primary school. Building of the admin building for Chepchoina Primary school The restoration and renovation of the buildings and sanitary facilities of the Chepchoina Nursery and Primary School. The restoration of the nearby Primary School in Maliki New Classrooms for the Japata Secondary School in Chepchoina Building a girls dormitory as part of Naifarm Secondary School Homes for teachers for different schools
ondersteuning van onderwijsprojecten in Kenia Village school in Maliki before and after renovation(2010) A Home for special needs is built for children with learning disabilities. Another major concern and involvement of Bea s is the integration of physically handicapped children at the Primary School in the nearby village of Endebess. Early 2012 a Vocational Training centre was opened to train students for several arts and crafts. In 2008 a Secondary school was built - The Andersen High School. The school caters for 320 students. Girls Dormitory opened in 2011 In 2011 a girl s dormitory was opened, and a boys dorm is now under construction for Andersen High School study grants for promising students working together and creating an educational bond with schools in The Netherlands Creating awareness among the Dutch people by spreading information concerning our educational projects in Kenya is the main task of the foundation in the Netherlands. These activities bring the necessary funds for above mentioned projects. Stichting Elimu Mountelgon Postadres: Reinier de Graafstraat GP Tilburg tel:
Our sister foundation, Stichting Ondersteuning Kitale (SOK), is also a non-profit organization which supplies medical aid in the same local area and started with their activities in We have joined efforts with SOK, and as a result the 2 foundations operate under the Mount Elgon Trust in Kenya. Housing project Apart from Health care and Education the Trust is also involved in HIV/Aids programs and low cost rural housing programs. The Andersen Clinic
The Mount Elgon Trust fosters very good relationships with all ministries that are relevant for the projects. Thank you for your interest and support!
