1 RESIDENCIES AND TRAINING PROGRAMMES FOR FOREIGN ARTISTS AND CULTURE PROFESSIONALS The provision of programmes for foreign culture professionals and artists forms a major part of the international work of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. In facilitating the establishment of lasting networks for exchange, this policy meets France s primary aim of promoting cultural diversity and is implemented through training programmes, residential courses and events across all cultural sectors. The programme is regularly updated throughout the year on the website: ww.culture.gouv.fr. Residential programmes available to professionals and artists can take various forms: training courses (some managed by the Maison des Cultures du Monde): 1. Short-term Current ( Courant ) courses. 2. Global Currents ( Courants du Monde ) courses, held over three weeks in November in the fields of arts administration, archiving, libraries and arts funding. 3. courses managed by departments of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, such as the international specialist course for archivists ( stage technique international d'archives ) run by the interministerial department of French archives [service interministériel des archives de France]. personalized three-week residential courses run within the framework of the Global Currents programme. longer periods of immersion and professional development, lasting between three months and one year, in state-run cultural institutions ( Profession Culture programme) residencies in major cultural centres ( Odyssée programme) and contemporary arts institutions. travel bursaries ( Patrimoine bursary, bursaries for authors and translators) : -Ministère de la culture et de la communication marie-sabine.marechal@culture.gouv.fr -Maison des cultures du Monde Two databases for visiting foreign artists and culture professionals provides information to cultural bodies hosting foreign artists and culture professionals concerning the necessary administrative, fiscal and legal formalities. Cagec, a company specializing in the field, has created a website for the Ministry of Culture and Communication, providing dossiers on various themes, jurisprudence and online answers to questions posed directly by users. The site is available in French and English and access is free. the association Pépinières européennes pour jeunes artistes has identified institutions offering residencies to foreign artists in different disciplines (writing, theatre, storytelling, circus, street arts, puppets, music, dance, hybrid forms, song). A database containing this information can be accessed via the association s website. 1
