Scientific expertice I have written extensively in the field of corruption. In my publications I focus on analysing the institutional and political process that facilitates the emerging of this phenomenon. I want to start off by highlighting the two main scholarly contributions that can be found in my publications, as follows: (1) a theoretical contribution points at the development of the term legal bribes. With this concept I demonstrate how the electoral law facilitates the emerging of corruption while creating impunity. (2) A methodological contribution in a peer-reviewed article describes the process used to conduct mixed method research that relies on a nested analysis (LNA-SNA approaches). This demonstrates my interest and skills to conduct qualitative and quantitative inquiries, which is a very innovative and important research field. My publications can be grouped into four thematic areas. Below I briefly describe each of these areas while providing a comprehensive overview of my scientific work. Currently, I am conducting research on tax avoidance by large corporations as part of my post-doctoral research activity. I have prepared an article based on a cross-national analysis of data from 22 countries, which has been submitted to the Journal of Business Ethics Crime. In this publication I test various hypotheses that aim at examine the role of CEOs, board of 2

3 3 Nubia Evertsson directors and auditing firms have on the emerging of tax avoidance (see below publication number 4). In a forthcoming publication I intend to test the five tax avoidance proxies available in the literature in the case of the largest 100 Swedish companies registered in the Stockholm stock exchange. The purpose of these studies is to understand how the top leadership of large organizations adopt creative responses to tax regulations. In 2008 I obtained project funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) to conduct a research project on political corruption and electoral financing. I am the solely author of four articles, one book chapter, one research report and a doctoral dissertation (see below publications number 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 17). In these publications I examined how the electoral law creates opportunities for crime by opening the possibility to give interested money to political candidates to influence political decisions and outcomes. Three main contributions of these publications to the international literature can be noted as follows. First, I introduced the term legal bribes to denote the inconsequential character of the electoral regulation that facilitates crime while protecting the perpetrators. This point aims at developing Rose-Ackerman s approach to institutional corruption. Second, I extended McBarnet s (2004) concept of creative compliance by arguing and demonstrating how corporate electoral donors comply with the letter of the law while violating its spirit. Third, I broke down a paradigm in criminological research that suggested that combining qualitative and quantitative methods is exotic and even forbidden. Publication number 4 discusses the nested analysis (Lieberman 2005), which is the methodological approach used in the overall project. I have also received funding to conduct a research project on police corruption. The results of this project appeared in one research report and three book chapters (see below publications number 11, 13, 14 and 19). Additionally, I presented these results at four international conferences. In these publications I identified twelve large categories of police corruption observed in the operative work of the police force in Colombia and the administrative process (recruitment, training, rotating shifts, sanctioning) that can contribute to curb this phenomenon. In particular, I extended the original classification proposed by Punch (1985), by showing new forms of police corruption which are particularly associated to criminal activities with organized criminal groups such as drug dealers, guerrillas, and paramilitary groups. Unlike other publication on the topic, my articles addressed the institutional reforms and analyse the administrative processes that can contribute to enhance the understanding of this practice. The book chapters as well as the different lectures given have inspired various reforms of the police force in Latin America in countries like Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. Previously I conducted various research projects on institutional corruption. As a result of these activities I wrote one monograph, one article, four book chapters and one report (see below publications number 2, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16 and 18). In these publications I introduced front line discussions on definitional issues and on various actions to fight corruption at institutional level. For example, publication number 10 proposes a definition of the term political white-collar crime, which was prepared to introduce the topic of political corruption into the field of criminology. Publication number 2 studies the mechanisms of citizen participation designed to fighting corruption in 17 Latin American countries, which constitutes the first attempt to study this phenomenon in this region. Publication number 8 proposes a tentative agenda for the business schools to enhance their role on promoting institutional development in the fight against corruption.
