1 newsletter March 2017 report TO OUR investors DEAR FRIENDS, This has been an amazing year for Kathy s House. Highlights and milestones of 2016 include: Adoption of a new logo, website and marketing materials Purchase of a new transport van for patients and family members Four fundraisers held including a record-breaking Gala and Golf Outing 90% of guests rated their stay as Best Possible Experience 10,810 nights of lodging provided to guests (the most ever) Volunteer Lorraine Kofler received a 2016 Health Care Hero Award from the Milwaukee Biz Times. With your support, we not only served a record number of patients and their families, but enhanced our level of guest services. As displayed on our occupancy graph on page 10, the need for a new facility has never been greater. In January of 2017, Froedtert Hospital announced they will be the lead investor in a new, larger facility, providing $6 million towards a new Kathy s House. Thanks to the Automotive Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee and other donors for a new van. Roman Weninger helped us to make the purchase from 5 Corners Dodge Chrysler Jeep. David Abestar of Signarama provided the new decals. We are forever grateful for Froedtert s transformative gift which will help us to achieve our vision To become a replicable national model in the field of Hospital Guest Housing by developing a state-of-the-art facility and delivering guest services based on best practices to improve patient care and the healthcare delivery model system. The Kathy s House Board of Directors recently adopted a goal of raising at least an additional $2 million to cover additional guest amenities and increased operating costs. Media sponsor Dale Rabas from iheart Media and Patty Metropulos receiving $36,000 from Potowatomi s Heart of Canal Street Program. Baseline construction costs were originally estimated at $7 million. As we have now engaged an architect and builder, today we have a more accurate cost estimate of what it will take to build a new house. This includes adding certain features which will make the new Kathy s House feel even more like a home away from home for our guests such as a skylight, large fireplace, outdoor covered patio, walking path and gazebo. We will also face additional operational costs as a result of increasing guest rooms from 18 to 24. These costs include, but certainly are not limited to, utilities, laundry services, insurance and staffing. Thank you and the thousands of donors who contributed to Kathy s House in Your generosity has provided access to needed medical care for hundreds of patients and has helped to keep families together during a medical crisis. Your support has helped us get to the precipice of a new Kathy s House. In the next few weeks, we will share detailed plans for our new House, along with sponsorship opportunities. We hope you will consider a gift towards our new facility. In Gratitude, Glen Van Fossen, Board Chair, and Patty Metropulos, Executive Director and CEO. Patty Metropulos Glen Van Fossen 1

5 SPOONER FAMILY ASSURES KATHY S HOUSE WILL RECEIVE SUPPORT INTO THE FUTURE Since their children were young, the Vogel family were close friends with the Spooner family. Both families were active members of the same church in Mequon. After Kathy Vogel Kuettner passed away and Dick and Judy founded Kathy s House, the Spooners were happy to be among the initial contributors, sponsoring many of the guest bedrooms. Jerry and Jack Spooner The Spooners continued to be generous annual donors to Kathy s House. In addition, five years ago the Spooners arranged for a segment of their main trust at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation to continue to benefit Kathy s House beyond their lifetime. We wanted to know for sure that Kathy s House would forever be a beneficiary. As long as Kathy s House existed, even long after we were gone, we wanted to be a part of their important mission. I hope other supporters of Kathy s House will join me in creating a planned gift that will help secure the future of the House, continued Jack. When you name Kathy s House as a beneficiary of your will or other estate plan, you create an enduring expression of your values while providing greatly needed support in the future, states Patty Metropulos, Executive Director. While these gifts may not involve an immediate, irrevocable transfer of cash or property, they do call for careful planning with the help of a qualified professional and we can help with that. If you have already named Kathy s House as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan assets, or are considering doing so, please contact Executive Director Patty Metropulos at so that we can carry out your wishes as intended and thank you for your gift. 11 FROEDTERT & THE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF WISCONSIN RANKED FOURTH IN THE NATION The growth of Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin has also led to tremendous growth at Kathy s House, said Patty Metropulos, Executive Director of Kathy s House. Doctors appreciate the care and affordable lodging we provide to so many of their patients and families from outside the area. We are proud to partner with an organization who is a leading force in healthcare today. In 2016, 94% of guests at Kathy s House were referred from Froedtert Hospital. For the second straight year, Froedtert Hospital ranks among the nation s top performing academic medical centers, according to an annual study by Vizient an alliance of U.S. academic medical centers and hospitals. The only Wisconsin hospital to be recognized, Froedtert Hospital rose in the new national rankings to No. 4 up from No. 5 in The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network also was the only state health system recognized for excellence in outpatient care, and was one of just five organizations nationwide to earn this honor. Of the many health care quality rankings out there today, we view Vizient s as most meaningful because it evaluates all care provided at our hospital rather than just a certain subset of patients or conditions, which is the methodology sometimes used by other ranking organizations, said Froedtert Hospital President Cathy Buck. In addition to this comprehensive approach, Vizient also stringently compares us to our national academic medical center peers in areas that truly make a difference in improving health care quality. The 8 top-performing academic medical centers that earned Vizient s 2016 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award are: University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics NYU Langone Medical Center Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital Rush University Medical Center WVU Medicine West Virginia University Hospitals Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Cedars-Sinai Health System More than 100 academic medical centers and 124 hospitals participated in the study. The ranking is published in the Vizient 2016 Quality and Accountability Study, which assesses performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient activities. The study criteria reflect the National Institute of Medicine s six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient-centeredness. For outpatient care, the Froedtert & MCW health network ranked second nationally among the five health care organizations earning Vizient s Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Award: NYU Langone Medical Center, Faculty Group Practice Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin University of Minnesota Physicians Denver Health University Health Care, University of Utah Medical Group The ranking methodology measured the quality of outpatient care in five areas: access to care, capacity and throughput, quality and efficiency, continuum of care and equity. Patty Metropulos, Executive Director of Kathy s House, and Cathy Buck, President of Froedtert Hospital. 11
