NURO-518 is regularly taught in both physical-campus and online classrooms. This was a new position created to allow me to serve as the first theologian to join the Department of Nursing faculty as a full-time professor. Along with the primary teaching duties, I 2
3 also served as a formal and informal consultant with School of Nursing and Health Studies faculty and staff to increase knowledge and application of the Ignatian principles as applied to our particular school s mission, shared pedagogical values, and the larger Georgetown campus community s engagement with Ignatian spirituality. Participated in a two-year Wabash Center (Lilly supported Program in Teaching Theology and Religion) funded national workshop focused on integrating theory and practice in pedagogical development for doctoral students and new professors in theology and religion. Facilitated monthly teaching enrichment workshops, arranged for guest speakers and also, in conjunction with my senior faculty colleague, developed performance evaluation tools for our teaching assistants, teaching fellows and their 3
4 mentoring professors. In coordination with Career Services, devised a template for a Teaching Portfolio doctoral students could use in their professional development and job search. I also mentored new doctoral students as they began their teaching and mentoring work in the university classroom. 5 This position supports the work of the primary faculty for Shalem s Young Adult Life and Leadership (YALLI) 2-year residency program. As part of this work, I planned and led a Silent Retreat for our program participants and primary faculty during YALLI s first Fall Residency session. MINISTRY Title: Protestant Chaplain Institution: Georgetown University Law and Medical Schools Address: Office of Campus Ministry, Georgetown University Law Center, 600 New Jersey Avenue NW Washington, DC Dates of Service: August 2008 May 2012 This position was created to provide a full-time Protestant Chaplaincy presence and ritual programming to Georgetown s Law and Medical School communities with emphasis place on student population and needs. As the first Protestant clergy to serve in this new role, I created, planned and led weekly, monthly and semester-specific Protestant-centric worship services, prayer groups, retreat days and weekend retreats for the law school community while also creating and facilitating a weekly interfaith prayer and reflection service at the law school. I also worked in cooperation with my interfaith ministry colleagues on both the law and medical school campuses and served as a spiritual director for interfaith retreats and also provided programming and presence during school-wide events on both campuses (Match Day, New Student Orientation, Memorial Services, Anatomical Donor Mass, etc.). Planned and led weekly Protestant prayer services at the medical school. Hired, trained and supervised two different Georgetown students who served as pianist-music director for the law school s Sunday evening Protestant congregation. Regular availability and work in pastoral care and spiritual direction were central to this position. Title: Chaplain in Residence Institution: Georgetown University, Office of Campus Ministry Address: 113 Healy Hall37th and O Streets, N.W. Washington D.C Dates of Service: August 2000 May 2008 This position provided pastoral presence and simple faith and spirituality programming for Georgetown undergraduate students living in on-campus residence halls. During my time in this position, I worked with students dealing with transition issues, academic stress and vocational discernment, drug abuse issues, LGBTQ issues and also provided mentoring and support to Residence Life staff. Title: Residence Life Coordinator Institution: Georgetown University, School of Continuing Studies Address: 3307 M St NW #202, Washington, DC Dates of Service: May-August 2006, 2007 This position provided primary oversight of all residence-hall and campus-based programming and facilities for Georgetown s Summer Programs for high school students as well as college students spending a summer in DC and taking courses at Georgetown. Interviewed, trained and directed undergraduate summer program counselors to monitor and run respective High School Program platforms (College Prep, Summer College for High School Juniors, Journalism Workshop). Worked with senior 5
6 administrative staff of Georgetown s School of Contionuing Studies to maintain programmatic integrity, troubleshoot scheduling and facility issues and serve as first responder to all on-campus emergency situations. Taught a course in Research and Study skills in the College Prep program. Title: Ministry Consultant and Retreat Facilitator Institution: Self-Employed Address: 3815 Whispering Lane, Falls Church, VA Dates of Service: May 1995 Present This position offers spiritual formation and discipleship-centric retreats, reflection days and music and art programs for church groups, non-profits and colleges and universities across the United States. Previous clients have included spring-break service groups from colleges and universities, children, family and music groups from local church congregations, and denominational national retreats and yearly conferences. In this role I have created and offered original retreat programming and also composed, arranged and performed original music and stage productions. Also have served as short-term spiritual director for full-time clergy, lay ministers and academic theologians during their sabbatical and related transitional periods. In this position I served as faculty/staff advisor to the Jewish- Christian Understanding Living and Learning Community and also oversaw Campus Ministry s Interfaith Dialogue and Understanding Working Group. Provided spiritual guidance and pastoral care for students, faculty and staff in conjunction with other Protestant ministry colleagues as well as interfaith chaplains in the Department.
