3 Letter from the Dean Thank you very much for supporting the Rutgers Pharmacy Career Fair. As a premiere pharmacy school that traces its origin back to 1892, the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University is recognized nationally and internationally for its challenging and progressive Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. As a result, our school attracts some of the brightest undergraduate and graduate students from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds. The overarching theme of our mission is to advance excellence in teaching, clinical practice, research, and service to the profession. We provide our students with a diverse portfolio of experiential opportunities along with rigorous and engaging basic sciences and clinical courses. This enables our graduates to pursue far-reaching career opportunities in pharmacy as well as in other professions such as law and medicine. In addition to our strong curriculum, we continue to provide opportunities for our students, such as the Honors Research Program and dual degree PharmD/MBA, PharmD/MPH, PharmD/PhD, and newly created PharmD/MD programs, to enable students to jump start work on advanced degrees while still in the PharmD program. As potential employers, you will find that our students are prepared to deal with the challenges of a diverse and competitive marketplace. The skills they learn through our strong academic curriculum and advanced practice experiences help them stand out in the job market. Most importantly, we encourage our students to be proactive, to develop strong leadership/communication skills, and to work well in teamoriented dynamics to ensure that they will succeed in all areas of pharmacy. 4 APhA-ASP at Rutgers University The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is the largest and oldest pharmacy organization in the United States. At Rutgers University, our Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) chapter represents the largest and most active pharmacy organization on campus. For nearly 40 years APhA-ASP has played an integral role in helping student pharmacists navigate the challenges of pharmacy school, explore career opportunities, and connect with others in the profession. Over 400 student members, overseen by 10 executive board members who lead 13 committees, are empowered this year to commit time and resources into pharmacy advocacy and into imprinting a positive impact on our school and community. Our members engage other students, faculty, and health care professionals in numerous ways. Through hands-on, patientcare projects our APhA-ASP chapter educates peers and community members on the scope of disease states such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Professional events such as the Pharmacy Career Fair refine student pharmacists business etiquette and nurture frames of mind prepared to tackle the challenges of post-graduate life. From the first day of class to the graduate s first moment as a licensed pharmacist and beyond, APhA provides students with the tools and experience they need to succeed. Mission Statement and Goals The Rutgers Pharmacy Career Fair, which began over twenty years ago, continues to serve as an important venue for demonstrating to our honored guests the talent and knowledge students of the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy possess. Representative of the high educational standards set by our faculty and curriculum, our students believe in challenging themselves to reach exceptional career goals. 5 The Pharmacy Career Fair provides prospective employers the opportunity to speak to the over 1,200 student pharmacists from Rutgers University, including over 200 soon-to-be graduating students. This event showcases their diverse academic and cultural backgrounds and gives them a stage upon which to voice their experiences, aspirations, and skills. As one of our most successful fundraising events, the Career Fair allows our APhA-ASP chapter to attend and participate in state and national student gatherings such as the NJPhA and the APhA Mid-Year Regional Meetings and Annual Conferences. At these conferences our chapter members network with pharmacy professionals from across the state and country as well as present independent research and community outreach posters, devised and conducted at Rutgers University. Over the years, our student pharmacists have branched out into numerous practice environments, exploring the career paths made available by the PharmD. degree; we believe the Career Fair fosters further diversification by representing a sampling of the vast opportunities available to them following graduation.
