1 ISU Audiology in Africa 2012 Gabriel Anne Bargen, Ph.D., CCC A/SLP Assistant Professor of Audiology Idaho State University Uganda Statistics Uganda total area 91,135 sq mi Land area 77,108 sq mi Total population million 49% under 15 years of age Life expectancy at birth female: 52 years; males: 48.8 years In 2010, ~1.3 million pupils below 18 years were orphans In 2009/10, 7.5 million (living in 1.2 million households) were considered poor Official language English but Luganda most widely used and preferred Religions: Roman Catholic (41.9%), Protestant (42%), Muslim (12.1%) Labor agriculture, fishery 458,106 businesses registered in 2010/11 on average each business employed about 2 persons Malaria remains highest cause of morbidity and mortality among children < 5 years 1

3 501(c) 3 non profit organization Mission: develop successful international partnerships and projects in the areas of Education, Health Care and Economic Development (main focus Africa) Nsumba Orphanage Project Nsumba Orphanage Project Began in 2009 The partnership has flourished into a 5 year commitment to help enhance the infrastructure and resources of the orphanage with an intent to create a self sustaining community. Boise based teams travel twice a year to provide medical screening, develop projects to improve the general well being of the students and to create partnerships with groups in Boise to assist with support. 4 Nsumba Orphanage 20 miles outside of Kampala (capital city of Uganda) owned by Kampala Catholic Diocese managed by the Ggogonnya Sisters Nsumba serves over 500 children ~400 live at Nsumba and another ~100 come in for school Life at Nsumba 4
