As you prepare for your career, you have many choices. The new Texas graduation plan is designed to help you explore your options and make your high school experience your very own. You can choose from five different endorsements to personalize your diploma STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Business and Industry, Arts and Humanities, Public Services, and Multidisciplinary Studies. Within these endorsements there are a number of career clusters to further define your experience. Additionally, you have the option to earn the Distinguished of Achievement and Performance Acknowledgements to recognize your talents and dedication. The very best jobs available now require education and training beyond a high school diploma. Whether you intend to pursue a high-demand, industry workforce credential from a community or technical college or a traditional four-year degree from a university, the choices you make in high school will determine your future options. 5 Graduation Program Overview Beginning in the school year, Texas high school students have greater flexibility and choice in their high school course selections. Each student is required to complete the basic courses called the foundation requirements. In addition, students now choose specialized coursework to earn an endorsement. The five endorsements are: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, Business and Industry, Arts and Humanities, Public Services, and Multidisciplinary Studies. A variety of career pathways, or specific course requirements, are available under the various endorsements. These pathways are organized into career clusters. STEM Business & Industry Arts & Humanities Public Service Multi Disciplinary Studies Programs of Study Students may also earn a Distinguished of Achievement designation and Performance Acknowledgements. 1

7 F o u n d a t i o n C o u r s e s + E n d o r s e m e n t All students are required to complete the foundation courses. In addition to the foundation courses, students must choose an endorsement. D i s t i n g u i s h e d L e v e l o f A c h i e v e m e n t To earn a Distinguished of Achievement diploma, students must take the foundation courses, choose an endorsement, and add a 4 th credit of math, which includes Algebra II, and a 4 th credit of science. The Distinguished of Achievement is required for students to be eligible for top 10% automatic admission to Texas public universities. The Distinguished of Achievement opens a world of educational and employment opportunities for you beyond high school. P e r f o r m a n c e A c k n o w l e d g e m e n t s Students can earn performance acknowledgements for outstanding performance: by taking dual credit courses, in bilingualism and bi-literacy, using PSAT, ACT s Plan, SAT, and ACT scores, achieving qualified scores on Advanced Placement (AP) tests or the International Baccalaureate Exam, or earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification. 8 U s i n g T h i s G u i d e As you use this guide, you will see recommended pathways (or coherent sequences of courses) organized by career clusters within each of the endorsements. A career cluster is a grouping of occupations and broad industries based on common traits. These career clusters are part of the Achieve Texas College and Career Initiative that is designed to help students (and their parents) make informed education decisions. It is based on the idea that education for the 21 st century should combine rigorous academics with relevant career education. When schools integrate academic and technical education, it helps you see the relevance of what you are learning. The pathways allow you to study a particular field in depth and help to facilitate a seamless transition for you from secondary to postsecondary opportunities. Employers and leaders in the Texas workforce have encouraged career oriented training and certification at the high school level to help meet their growing demands. Students who take advantage of these opportunities are prepared for future success. As you enter your freshman year in high school (9 th grade), you must indicate the endorsement you plan to follow. However, you may change or add an endorsement at any time. We don t recommend it, but you can graduate without earning an endorsement if, after your sophomore year, your parent signs a form permitting you to omit the endorsement requirement. The pathways in this book represent the courses you must take to earn a specific endorsement. You are encouraged to visit with your counselor about your interests. Some courses may vary from year to year. Your counselor can help you stay on track to earn your endorsement. 4

9 CAREER & TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Judson ISD is proud to participate in the statewide high school reform initiative called AchieveTexas. This college and career initiative allows students to achieve success by preparing them for secondary and postsecondary opportunities, career preparation and advancement, meaningful work, and active citizenship. The AchieveTexas initiative centers on establishing career clusters in all of our schools as a strategy for improving high school completion rates and college and workforce readiness. It is based on the belief that the curricula of the 21st century should combine rigorous academics with relevant career education that incorporates the College Readiness Standards, personalized learning environments, academic and social support, relevant teaching and learning designed to promote postsecondary success, and effective educators and leaders. Career clusters are a way of reorganizing learning around programs of study that will prepare students for an ever more competitive global economy. AchieveTexas offers guidance to help students plan their educational experience based on their career goals and allows students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful transition into skilled employment, advanced training, an associate s degree, a bachelor s degree, or technical certification. AchieveTexas provides an organizing tool for redesigning schools, small learning communities, academies, and magnet schools. Career programs of study, or career pathways, represent a recommended sequence of courses based on a student s personal interests and career goals. The idea is to connect what students learn in school every day to what they aspire to do tomorrow, thus increasing engagement with school and motivation to achieve. CERTIFICATION/LICENSE PREPARATION PROGRAMS Industry certifications are important components of Career & Technical Education programs and are gaining importance in the business world as evidence of skill attainment; hundreds of certifications are available, and more are introduced each year. Earning a certification has many benefits; it gives students a sense of accomplishment, a highly valued professional credential, and helps make them more employable with higher starting salaries. Judson ISD has aligned numerous career pathways with industry certifications and licenses, thereby providing students opportunities to earn nationally recognized, industry-current credentials. These certifications and licenses are identified within each career cluster. Information on the certifications/licenses in the programs are also available in each respective high school Career Center. TECHNICAL DUAL CREDIT PROGRAMS Dual Credit courses provide an opportunity for students to obtain college credit while pursuing their high school diploma. The traditional high school course work is expanded into the college course curriculum. Eligibility must be met before the first day of class through an application process. Available for selected courses only information on the approved courses is available in each respective high school Career Center. Must meet college processing deadline to be considered Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards must be met. Official transcript must be sent to the college. 5

10 College College College College College ALAMO ACADEMIES Dual Credit Off-Campus Courses Dual Credit courses provide an opportunity for students to obtain college credit while pursuing their high school diploma. The traditional high school course work is expanded into the college course curriculum. It is a two-year commitment and students must sign up their 10 th grade year. *TSI College Readiness Assessment must be taken and an official transcript must be sent to the college. Aerospace Academy (AA) Course # Credits Aerospace T720 - T721 3 This program is designed to provide high school students with technical training in airframe and power plant mechanics from college instructors, with paid summer internships with one of the industry partners. Upon graduation, students will be prepared for jobs in the aerospace industry where they can complete their technical training toward their FAA license. Up to thirty college credit hours are available for a post secondary course of study. **Leads to jobs as an Aircraft Turbines Mechanic or Aircraft Structures Mechanic Information Technology &Security Academy(ITSA) Course # Credits Information Technology & Security T354 - T355 3 This program is designed to provide high school students with knowledge and skills in the area of information technology computer security, web development and programming and offers opportunities for paid summer internships with one of the industry partners. Graduates of this program will be prepared for entry-level Information Technology positions or for post-secondary Information Technology course of study. ** Leads to jobs in Information Technology/Security & Assurance Manufacturing Technology Academy (MTA) Course # Credits Manufacturing Technology Academy T731 - T732 3 This program prepares students for careers in manufacturing production operations and facilities maintenance. Student competes for paid internships in the summer of their junior year with such companies as Dynatech Turbine Services, Columbia Industries, Alamo Iron Works, Light Speed Technology and others. ** Leads to careers such as CNC tool Operator, Manufacturing Operation Maintenance Assistant Health Professions Academy (HPA) Course # Credits Health Professions T610 - T611 3 This program is designed for students wishing to pursue degrees ranging from nursing and health information systems to respiratory care and invasive cardiovascular technology. The Center for Health Profession at Philip s College has the most advanced human simulation patient human simulation patient facility in the United States. It houses complete radiology systems and surgical site, an eight bed general hospital suite, and a fully functional nursing station. **Limited number of slots available. **Leads to jobs in Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Vocational Assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse Heavy Equipment Academy Course # Credits Heavy Equipment T725 T726 3 This program will provide a college pathway for high school juniors and seniors to attain Industry and Academic certificates helping to lead to high wage earning jobs or to further their higher education while addressing critical industry workforce needs. Industry partners include HOLT CAT, ASCO (Case), ROMCO (Volvo), RDO (John Deere), Cooper Equipment, Zachry Construction, Dean Word Co., Martin Marietta **Leads to jobs with State Highway departments, Waste Management, Construction, Holt Cat, and an array of different oil and gas companies. 6

11 Other Elective Other Elective Other Course WORK BASED-LEARNING (CAREER PREPARATION) & OTHER CAREER ELECTIVES Work-Based Learning is designed to provide students part-time work experience and classroom instruction that will prepare them with attitudes and skills necessary to be successful in today s work force. Students may earn two (2) credits for attending the Career Preparation class each day and working a minimum of 10 hours weekly or three (3) credits for attending the Career Preparation class each day and working a minimum of 15 hours weekly. The course should span the entire school year, and classroom instruction must average one class period each day for every school week. A student is expected to be enrolled the entire school year; however, in accordance with local district policy, a student may enter or exit the course at semester when extenuating circumstances require such a change. OPEN TO ALL 11 TH AND 12 GRADERS WHO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS: 1. Career Preparation Request Form submitted to the counselor or instructor 2. Able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week for each semester 3. Good attendance record and no mandatory/discretionary discipline placements 4. Able to provide own transportation from school to worksite. 5. Student must be a minimum age of 16 and hold valid work documentation such as a Social Security Card, Career Preparation Course # Credits Career Preparation I, II T430 - T ea. Career Preparation (CPI) is a work-based instructional arrangement that develops essential knowledge through classroom technical instruction and on-the-job training in an approved career and technical training area. Students will receive general lifelong learning skills, employability skills, leadership skills, work ethics, safety, mathematics, financial transactions, and communications as a group. Each student will have an individual training plan that will address their job specific knowledge and skills. Students will work to complete Career Safe 10 Hour OSHA Certification. All students must follow the Texas Education Agency and JISD guidelines for Career Preparation. Business Information Management Course # Credits 9-12 Business Information Management (BIM) I T300 1 Students are introduced to the Microsoft Office Suite of programs: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, and Access. The students will develop technology skills that prepare them to compete in the business world. The course covers word processing -- to build communications skills; spreadsheets -- to solve business problems; databases - to gather business information; and multi-media presentations -- to inform and persuade. The students will also learn to work within the operating system to learn file management skills. Business Information Management Course # Credits 9-12 Business Information Management (BIM) II Prerequisite B average in BIM I T305 1 The course is designed to prepare students to test for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access. MOS provides students with a global competitive edge in the workplace and college opportunity knocks! Students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies, create complex word-processing documents, develop sophisticated spreadsheets using charts and graphs, make an electronic presentation using appropriate multimedia software and utilize databases tools. Using digital cameras, scanners, CD burners, and digital projects, students will understand and create electronic portfolios. Students taking this class are encouraged to test their computer apps skill by participating in area-wide UIL competition. 7

This course prepares and mentors the students through the research process of matching careers with skills and interests by using web based interest profile applications. The student will additionally use the College Board and other college ready websites to help prepare the student in the college planning process for their grade level. Additionally, it teaches students the global skills necessary for acquiring and maintaining highly skilled jobs. The course objective instills self-confidence, essential knowledge of business concepts, and the belief that you can be as successful as your dreams. College & Career Readiness II Course # Credits College & Career Readiness II T307.5 This unique project-based research course builds skills necessary for personal and professional success beyond high school in the real world. This course prepares and mentors the students through the complicated college application and student aid process. Students will use College Board, Apply Texas, or the Common Application to apply to the colleges of their choice, prepare essays, prepare and request letters of recommendations, and learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students will have the opportunity to meet with college admissions recruiters and ask the necessary questions throughout the course. A highly recommended course for all Seniors in the fall semester and juniors in the spring semester. They will prepare an electronic portfolio, PowerPoint presentation, and test for National Career Readiness Certification. The course encourages students to dream, plan, and aspire to college and career success. This course is also designed to provide students an opportunity to earn one advanced measure for the Distinguished of Achievement. Professional Communications Course # Credits 9-12 Professional Communications T440.5 This course blends written, oral, and graphic communication in a career-based environment. Careers in the global economy require individuals to be creative and have a strong background in computer and technology applications, a strong and solid academic foundation, and a proficiency in professional oral and written communication. Within this context, students will be expected to develop and expand the ability to write, read, edit, speak listen, apply software applications, manipulate computer graphics, and conduct Internet research. 8

PLTW forms partnerships with public schools, higher education institutions and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from our educational system. Students take a sequence of courses which introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering prior to entering college. However, those not intending to pursue further formal education will benefit greatly from the knowledge and logical thought processes that result from taking some or all of the courses provided in the curriculum.
