5 Antioch University New England Applied Behavior Analysis Certificate Program Practica Site Guidelines Requirements for Practica through Antioch 1. Duration Generally over the academic year, from September September, with flexibility to extend the practicum due to individual circumstances. 2. Time ABA Certificate Program (ABA) students commit 1000 hours for the duration of the practicum. Students must complete a minimum of 300 hours per semester. 3. Nature The student's primary focus should be on learning new behavior analytic skills related to the BACB Third Edition Task List. Activities must adhere to the dimensions of applied behavior analysis identified by Baer, Wolf, and Risley (1968) in the article Some Current Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Appropriate experience activities include: 1. Conducting assessment activities related to the need for behavioral interventions, 2. Designing, implementing, and monitoring behavior analysis programs for clients, 3. Overseeing the implementation of behavior analysis programs by others, 4. Other activities normally performed by a behavior analyst that are directly related to behavior analysis such as attending planning meetings regarding the behavior analysis program, researching the literature related to the program, talking to individuals about the program; plus any additional activities related to oversight of behavioral programming such as behavior analyst supervision issues, or evaluation of behavior analysts' performance. The supervisor will determine if activities qualify. Examples of activities that are not appropriate as experience activities include: attending meetings with little or no behavior analytic content, providing interventions that are not based in behavior analysis, doing non-behavior analytic administrative activities, or any other activities that are not directly related to behavior analysis.
6 4. Supervision There is a minimum requirement of one hour per week of individual supervision, and an additional hour of either individual or small group (5 students or less) supervision. The supervisor must observe the student engaging in behavior analytic activities in the natural environment at least once every two weeks. During the initial half of the total experience hours, observation should concentrate on student-client interactions. This observation may be conducted via web-cameras, videotape, video conferencing, or similar means in lieu of the supervisor being physically present. The site supervisor must be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, with a minimum of two years of post-bcba clinical experience. It is the student s responsibility to be aware of certification requirements and, where applicable, state licensure requirements. Students are expected to participate in other learning opportunities such as case conferences and staff meetings. The supervisor will write an evaluation of the student at the end of each semester. The program will provide forms for the supervisor evaluations. 5. Visual Taping Students are expected to bring taped samples of their work to their Professional Seminar leader with permissions for release signed by clients. Four live work samples are required for each semester of Professional Seminar. 6. Practicum Contract The contract lists the specifics of the training experience. It includes the days of the week to be worked, the activities that the student will be engaged in, the name and credentials of the supervisor, and the specific learning goals to be pursued during the placement. The contract is finalized by the end of the first month at the site and signed by the student, supervisor, and professional seminar leader. It is the student s responsibility to write the contract and see that all parties receive a copy. University, Field Site, and Student Responsibilities University Responsibilities 1. Provide professional liability for all faculty and students for work performed in the practicum. 2.
