6 PRODUCT NEWS 6 IEN EUROPE INDUSTRY NEWS Yaskawa & Omron: New forms in European cooperation strategies Yaskawa Electric Europe GmbH (YEG) and Omron Europe B.V. (OEE) have agreed to terminate their joint venture and to replace it by a new mid-term European partnership agreement effective 5th October In order to grow the market shares further, YEG and OEE have decided to build a new basis for a partnership. For that reason YEG will strengthen its direct sales activities to expand direct key account sales, whereas OEE will further strengthen its focus on the industrial automation business. Small motor market The global economic downturn is forecast to create a 23% contraction of unit shipments in the world market for small motors in 2009, according to the new IMS Research report. However, because of the growing importance of the medical sector, which currently accounts for 19% of the market, IMS Research expects a recovery to pre-recession levels of activity by early Fieldbus Foundation releases new test kits The Fieldbus Foundation announced the release of its latest FOUNDATION fieldbus conformance and interoperability test kits for use by plant automation equipment suppliers. The updated test kits include the H1 Interoperability Test Kit (H1-ITK) and High Speed Ethernet Conformance Test Kit (HSE-CTK) The H1-ITK verifies the functionality of an H1 (31.25 kbit/s) device and its conformity with the FOUNDATION fieldbus Function Block and Transducer Block specifications. 8 IEN MEETS IEN Europe interviews Peter Heimlicher CEO at Contrinex IEN: Mr. Heimlicher, first and foremost Contrinex is known as a supplier of inductive sensors for applications under harsh conditions. What are the key industries for those sensors? Heimlicher: All-metal sensors are primarily used in the metal working industry, where they have to operate under especially harsh conditions, as well as in the food & beverage industry and in offshore applications. High-pressure sensors, on the other hand, are frequently used in cement processing and hydraulic applications. IEN: In the spring of 2007, you launched your robust, all-metal RFID system. How was the new product received by the market, and in which areas has it been applied up to now? Heimlicher: RFID systems are very complex systems, which require a rather demanding and time-consuming marketing. Typical applications are, for example, the rough, metal-cutting and oil-containing conditions in the automotive industry. The tags mounted to the work piece carriers contain data related to the specific product, as well as information on the manufacturing process. Heimlicher: The label Made in Switzerland is still very important for our customers, in the established as well as in the so-called emerging markets. IEN: Last year you have expanded your product portfolio by safety light curtains for finger and hand protection. Will safety sensors gain more importance for Contrinex in the future, and will the safety products even be expanded to other areas? Heimlicher: Yes, the product launch of safety light curtains for access control is still planned for this year. Furthermore, our portfolio of safety products will be expanded continuously in the future. IEN: Contrinex, among 34 other companies, is a member of the IO Link Consortium. In brief, IO Link is a multivendor industrial standard that provides for a continuous communication from the control to the field level, which facilitates the transmission of process, parameter and diagnostic data. Which products and solution do you offer in this area, and how have they been received by your customers? As the products have to operate in applications under harsh conditions, Contrinex uses its all-metal technology for the manufacturing of the ConIdent RFID system. Heimlicher: Currently, our new fiber-optic amplifiers with digital display LF# are available with IO Link interface. In the future, IO Link versions will be offered for most of our new products, as well as for ASIC-based sensors. At present, the demand for those products is rather moderate, but I am sure that this will change with the expansion of the IO Link product range. IEN: Mr. Heimlicher, thank you very much for the interview at IEN: After your mid-decade expansion in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India, your focus shifted to Europe again in 2007 and 2008, with investments in Italy, France, Hungary and Germany. How important is Europe for Contrinex as a company location and market? Heimlicher: Europe, and here especially Germany, is still the biggest market for us and thus of crucial importance. 10 TECHNOLOGY SPECIAL TEST & MEASUREMENT, SENSORS TEMPERATURE MONITORING & SENSOR CONFORMANCE in clinical & laboratory sterilizers Autoclave sterilizers present temperature sensors with a very demanding operational environment in terms of high levels of pressure and moisture. Temperature sensors specified for autoclave applications, usually type T thermocouple or Pt100 thermometer, must be specially designed and constructed for such environments; reliability, accuracy and stability are essential for ensuring safe sterilization procedures. Sterilizer temperature sensors The Labfacility Autoclave Load thermocouple is specially designed to provide the best possible accuracy and stability in the rigorous environment of clinical and laboratory sterilizer chambers. The design has been subjected to successful, thorough evaluation by CMI Healthcare including leak testing in a vacuum chamber and processing through normal, porous load sterilization cycles. The sensor complies with test standard HTM 2010, Clause 6.19/6.21. The special multiple seal construction of this Autoclave Thermocouple ensures that moisture ingress is prevented, even at elevated pressure. The combination of a close tolerance type T thermoelement and exceptional rugged construction ensure high accuracy, high stability and long term reliability. Validation of the temperature sensors All temperature sensors used in the sterilization process must be routinely checked and/or calibrated in accordance with procedures described in HTM 2010 Part 3 or any other national standards. There are various ways of achieving such compliance which typically involve sending the sensors to an accredited laboratory for certification, an expensive and time consuming procedure. A practical, highly cost effective alternative method is to use an in-house, portable temperature calibration system from Labfacility; this provides a rapid and simple method of sensor checking and traceable calibration on the bench. This comprises a thermal reference (dry block) calibrator, a UKAS certified reference thermometer (Pt100), a calibrated L200 8 channel indicator/logger and PC software: this, when used with any Windows PC represents a complete solution for on-site accreditation which allows direct comparison of the sterilizer probes (up to seven at a time) with the UKAS certified reference sensor. A simple calculation of difference temperature (if any) between the logged values indicated by the reference and each test probe at a given, stable temperature (chosen by the user) in the dry block calibrator gives the error value for each sensor at particular temperatures. The procedure can be repeated for alternative temperatures set on the dry block as required (e.g. 70, 100, 125, 150 C). The system can even be used independently of a PC if desired. Rather than working with logged data, readings for each probe can be taken manually by means of the L200 front panel key and differences calculated by the user. This is an equally valid procedure. The design of the dry block ensures that all sensors located in its well will be at exactly the same temperature. The necessary calculations can be performed in a spreadsheet by applying formulae to the relevant cells and the logged values imported into the worksheet. On this basis, the sterilizer probes are traceably calibrated (UKAS traceable) in-house for full compliance with specified testing and validation procedures. In order to be able to meet the growing expectations of customers and simultaneously ensure efficient production, the automobile production lines have to be constantly modified, remodeled or expanded. New materials, improved production processes, and expanded automation potential are also putting higher demands on the automation solutions already in use. Linear-Position Sensor supports Ethernet Powerlink The R-Series Ethernet Powerlink sensor by MTS is designed for use in dynamic control applications with short cycle times. Factor 1 on all metals Thanks to multi-spule technology, the sensors designed to meet the IP68 degree of protection detect all metals without reduction factor - regardless of whether it is iron, stainless steel, copper, aluminum or brass. Not only that, in comparison to conventional ferrite core sensors, they made it possible for FAW-VW to detect all metals used in the production lines with considerably higher switching distances up to 50 mm (FAW-VW uses the Ni50U-CK40 series) thus offering high degrees of freedom for installation and area of application. A further advantage of the Factor 1 sensors that are sold by Turck (Tianjin) Sensor Co., Ltd. (TTS) in China is the fact that with the few sensor types that are suitable for many applications within the production line, the automobile manufacturer was able to set up simple and cost-efficient warehousing. One of the hardest areas of application in the FAW-VW plants is welding assembly. In the overall production line, the individual parts of the various sedan models run through up to 5,000 spot welding steps. For monitoring the automated motion sequences, FAW-VW relies on the sensors from the MT series. Mounted on the robot arms, the special sensors coated with teflon continuously check the position of the robotics in relation to the workpieces and thus guarantees not only spot-precise welding processes, but also error-free flow in the assembly process. The special challenge in this application: In welding assembly, not only high switching distances are required in order to be able to detect the position of the workpieces early on and, if necessary, correct them, but also excellent shielding against external environmental conditions. Because uprox+ sensors do not contain ferrite core, they are equally insensitive to strong magnetic fields, like those that develop during the welding process, as they are to flying sparks or mechanical wear. The flush (or over-flush) and non-flush installable Factor 1 sensors thus guarantee the highest reliability. Installation at any angle For recording the position on cross-bars in final assembly and in the paint shops, FAW- VW relies on uprox+ sensors from the QV40 series, which can reliably detect the presence or absence of metals up to a distance of 50 mm. However, the square-shaped sensors that are simple and uncomplicated to install via a mounting clamp perform their services reliably not only with regard to determining the position on the cross-bars, but they can also be used literally in any angle of the production line. Because their active surface can be positioned in five different directions manually without tools, the QV40 sensors can be comfortably and quikkly adapted to the respective applications and environmental conditions. Like the MT series, the QV40 sensors thus allowed production engineers at FAW-VW to cover detection applications in the entire production line using a low number of product types.
