1 A study of beginning offers SALARY SURVEY WINTER 2010 Volume 49 Issue 1 62 Highland Avenue Bethlehem, PA / First Look Shows Salary Offers Down for Class of 2010 Average salary offers to new college graduates in the Class of 2010 have dipped slightly compared to salaries reported a year ago. Currently, the overall average offer to a bachelor s degree graduate is $48,351, down 2 percent from the average offer of $49,353 made to Class of 2009 bachelor s degree graduates. The dip reflects the decreased demand for new grads, which was projected by employers back in August. At that time, employers responding to the Job Outlook 2010 Fall Preview survey reported plans to decrease their college hires by about 7 percent. Moreover, only 29.2 percent of those respondents reported plans to increase average salaries to Class of 2010 graduates. In fact, although there is no direct correlation, the total number of offers reported is down 29 percent compared to last year s Winter report, despite the fact that the same number of schools provided data. Consequently, the overall 2 percent drop is no surprise. However, it is important to note that not all disciplines saw a decrease in their average offer. Salaries to business majors did fall some. As a group, business majors saw their average offer fall 1 percent from $47,641 to 47,187. Offers to individual business majors followed a similar pattern. The average offer to accounting graduates now stands at $47,982, down 0.7 percent, despite the fact that accounting ranks among the most sought-after degrees at the bachelor s level. (See Figure 1.) Business administration/management graduates experienced a decrease to their average salary offer, which dropped by 1.5 percent to $45,200. However, there is some positive news for this group. In both last year and this year s Winter Salary Survey reports, retail/wholesale firms accounted for the largest number of offers to these graduates; this year, retail/wholesale firms offered these graduates an average offer of $40,235, up 1.1 percent from $39,778 last year at this time. While finance graduates topped the list of majors in demand for Class of 2010 graduates, their average salary offer shows a minor decrease of 0.4 percent to $49,607. Investment banks were the employers most interested in these graduates, and extended offers that averaged $57,263. The average salary offer to marketing graduates slipped by 1.9 percent to $42,499. They garnered interest from retail/wholesale employers, who offered them an average of $48,171. Coming out on top in this report are graduates with computer-related degrees (computer programming, computer science, computer systems analysis, and information sciences/systems). As a group, these graduates posted a 6.1 percent increase to their average salary offers, up from $56,128 to $59,570. 2 ABOUT THE SURVEY All 2010 issues of Salary Survey will report on salary offers extended to students graduating between September 1, 2009, and August 31, The Winter 2010 Salary Survey contains information received during the period of September 1, 2009, through January 15, In November, 2009, Salary Survey participants received reporting packets that prepared them to report data for all 2010 issues of Salary Survey. Schools that participated in the Spring report submitted their data to NACE by January 15, 2010, and are listed on the back cover of the report. Schools were required to report the student s major, degree level, salary offer and graduation date. They had the option of reporting the student s gender, job location, employer type that extended the offer, and the job function. HOW TO USE SALARY SURVEY Employers may use Salary Survey as a guide for determining salaries for new college hires. It may also be used as a tool for comparing current salaries to the national averages, or to the salaries that similar employers are offering. Colleges may use Salary Survey to counsel students regarding salaries they may have been offered, or to benchmark the salaries that their institution s own students are receiving against national averages. Salary Survey offers averages as well as percentiles, so it is recommended that decisions are based upon as many data points as possible. Also, it is recommended that all sections of the report be used. Job location reports are also available for purchase by employers having multiple locations. For example, these reports allow for comparing salaries in New York to those in Los Angeles. And for reports on salaries based only on target schools, Key School reports may be purchased. Key School reports give the averages by discipline (in aggregate) based upon a group of schools (minimum of six schools). SCOPE AND NATURE OF THE SURVEY Salary Survey compiles data from career planning and placement offices of colleges and universities across the United States. The reports consist of starting salary offers made to new graduates by employing organizations in business, industry, government, and by nonprofit and educational institutions. The figures reported are for base salaries only and do not include bonuses, fringe benefits, or overtime rates. Confidentiality is maintained for the individual, the college, and the employer. The number of offers reported in each report is cumulative from the previous September. The offers reported in Salary Survey are a sample of actual job offers made to new college graduates during the recruiting year and do not imply all job offers made to all college graduates. Salary Survey reports offers, not acceptances. It does not distinguish between single and multiple offers to individual students and, consequently, offers in the study cannot be equated with actual hires. Also, in as much as the ratio of offers to hires is partially a function of the economic climate, year-to-year ratio comparisons based on Survey data would be invalid. In those categories where offers are relatively few, the data should be regarded only as indicative. Salary Survey is available only to members of the National Association of Colleges and Employers and to Salary Survey subscribers, and is intended for their professional use. Refer to this section when you are looking for the average starting salary offer for a particular job function, such as sales, computer programming, process engineering, etc. Starting Salary Offers to All Candidates by Curriculum and Employer This section shows data first by looking at the type of degree held by the student, then according to the type of employer who extended the offer. Refer to this section when you are looking for the average starting salary offer from a specific type of employer to a graduate holding a specific type of degree. For example, use this section to find out the average salary offer consulting firms made to electrical engineering graduates. Data in this section are listed as follows: Bold headings are the curriculum areas which follow the order shown on pages 4 and 5. Employer types under each curriculum are categorized according to the sector of the economy they fall under with service employers being listed first, followed by manufacturing employers, then by nonprofit/ government employers. Starting Salary Offers to All Candidates by Curriculum and Job Function This section shows data first by looking at the type of degree held by the student, then according to the job function that was offered. Refer to this section when you need information about the average salary offer to a graduate holding a specific type of degree for a specific job function. For example, use this section to find out the average starting salary offer to MIS graduates performing systems analysis work. Data in this section are listed as follows: Bold headings represent the curriculum areas which follow the order shown on pages 4 and 5. Job functions under each curriculum are listed in the order which they appear on pages 6 and 7. Number of Offers Reported When referring to Salary Survey it is important to consider the number of offers that each average salary represents. Averages with a low number of offers should be viewed with caution. Areas typically containing a low number of offers at the Bachelor s Degree level are Communications Majors, Health Sciences Majors, Home Economics Majors, and Humanities & Social Sciences (Liberal Arts) Majors. The number of offers reported can be low for a variety of reasons. In some instances, the number of degrees awarded to a particular major is low thereby making data scarce for the group. In addition, because Salary Survey reports up-to-the-minute salary offers (e.g. those being extended to the current graduating class), those majors that typically don t find employment until after graduation may not be represented in the report. Furthermore, other graduates such as teachers and healthcare workers have more of a direct path to a job, so they are less likely to be involved in the campus recruiting program, and thereby less likely to report their salary offers.
