Our ability to speak, smile, taste, chew, and smell are optimized by a dentist s care, who knows and understands how all of the oral tissues and structures function. According to the United States Department of Labor, employment of dentists is projected to grow by 16 percent through 2018, which is faster than the average for all occupations. 9 Certificate in orthodontics Advanced education program Via ASDOH s Orthodontics certificate program, you ll be trained to treat a wide range of orthodontic problems, including cranio-facial anomalies like cleft lip and cleft palate as well as orthognathic/orthodontic problems. The curriculum includes biological and clinical sciences education. Patient care begins within the first weeks and culminates with comprehensive case examinations. 11 Kirksville, Missouri Kansas City St. Louis Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health MOSDOH ATSU s newest school opened its doors to its first class of students in fall 2013 and will help address the critical shortage of dentists in Missouri. With a new state-of-the-art facility, MOSDOH offers an innovative curriculum and simulation technology to accelerate development of dental and oral health skills. In addition, students learn from and are encouraged to become caring, community-minded healthcare providers.

14 Certificate in public health - dental emphasis A perfect complement to your DMD degree Through a partnership with ATSU s College of Graduate Health Studies, ASDOH, and MOSDOH students receive a certificate in public health - dental emphasis while enrolled in its DMD program. A dual degree DMD/master in public health (MPH) option is also available to students. You ll learn how public health impacts the dental profession. All course work in the certificate program and MPH is completed 100 percent online. Did you know? ATSU 14 In the United States, dentists receive doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or doctor of dental medicine (DMD) degrees. Training for both degrees is similar. A dentist must pass both state and national exams before practicing. ASDOH and MOSDOH each use nationally recognized leaders to teach modules in their respective areas of expertise, giving you access to the nation s top minds. 15 Dental clinics Devoted to serving the underserved ASDOH ASDOH s four University-affiliated dental clinics offer hands-on training for students and state-of-the-art dental services and orthodontic care to the public at affordable fees. The clinics include the ASDOH Dental Clinic, Dental Care West, Advanced Care Clinic, and Orthodontic Clinic. The facilities are equipped to provide special healthcare services to patients who have intellectual, physical, or emotional disabilities. They also provide training for Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents, who are post-doctoral, licensed dentists. This residency allows students to enhance skills while working on more difficult cases. MOSDOH ATSU s Dental Education and Oral Health Clinic, based in St. Louis, Mo., provides hands-on training for MOSDOH s third- and fourth-year dental students. In partnership with Affinia Healthcare, the 79,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art facility will feature a dental urgent care center and 93 operatories to serve St. Louis area residents regardless of age, special needs, or income. The ASDOH Dental Clinic opened in 2005 and is located on campus in Mesa, Ariz. It has 98 patient chairs. The Dental Education and Oral Health Clinic in St. Louis.

17 Preparing for health professions school application Preparing an application for health professions school may be one of the most important processes a prospective student will ever encounter. The key differences between successful and unsuccessful applications often lie in the manner cumulative experiences are portrayed in the application. Applicants with the appropriate preparation need to be effective in completing each component of the application to be selected from among thousands of other applicants. Pre-health professions students who have developed their academic backgrounds and out-of-class experiences need to set themselves apart so that their application leads to an interview, and ultimately an acceptance. With extensive experience in graduate health professions admissions, ATSU Admissions staff offer important tips and guidelines for prospective students to consider when preparing successful applications. Application tips Submit your application close to the admissions cycle s opening date. Late applications may hinder your ability to secure full screening, an interview, and/or acceptance to a program. Be honest and genuine about your intentions and who you are as a person. University representatives want to have a good impression of why you are applying to a graduate health professions program and what your motivations are for your career path. Be concise, but detailed. You have a lot of information to share within a limited space. Avoid overuse of prepositions, use active verbs and convey clear imagery. Avoid jargon/slang/acronyms to eliminate confusion or misinterpretation of the activities in which you are involved. List all jobs/activities/shadowing. List experiences starting before your college freshman year through current date, even if they are not medically related. Gaps of time without explanation can be a red flag (weakness). Explain obvious red flags. If you know areas within your application that may be questioned, address them honestly. Do not assume those areas will be overlooked. A reasonable, honest explanation can help University representatives evaluate whether the situation is problematic for entry. Explain personal growth within your application. Share how you have overcome obstacles to become a competitive applicant. Share examples. Tell us who you are through your experiences and stories. Prepare for the application process in advance by becoming informed regarding prerequisites/requirements, which often take multiple years to complete. Research this information early so as not to delay successful completion or graduation. Proof all application materials carefully and seek feedback from those who can provide sound advice. Use all available resources such as campus writing center experts, pre-health advisers, experienced faculty or professional mentors, or someone with proven writing skills. Make sure you submit your own work! Use specified application services, as indicated. Follow directions to avoid delays in the application process. Build relationships for letters of recommendation. The strongest letters of recommendation are from people who truly know you and not those with whom you have had minimal contact. Research schools in advance and know the mission and culture of schools for which you plan to apply. Apply to schools that fit your personality and personal philosophy.
