3 DECORATION AND FLORAL MINISTER DESCRIPTION POSITION Purpose of the Position: To beautify the Church during Ordinary times and Holy Seasons in order to enhance the worship of the parish. Responsibilities: 1) Serve as schemed by the respective co coordinators. 2) Follow the verbal and written instructions of the cocoordinators. 3). Assist with r recruitment of new volunteers Annual Liturgy Ministry Fair or assist Parish Hospitality when this is assigned to the Liturgy Ministers Group 4). Attend the Fall or Spring Retreat for Liturgical Ministers and receive the blessing for Liturgical Ministers during the Mass. Ministry Meetings, which normally occur during these retreats. 5). Be active participants in the entire liturgy. Qualifications: 1) Active membership in the parish 2) Baptism and Confirmation 3) Willingness to serve as a team member as well as ability to work independently. 4) Maintain a lifestyle consistent with Catholic teachings and values and consistent with being a follower of Christ. 5) To be effective role models of Catholic teaching and values both at the Church and in our lives outside the Church. 3
4 6) Willingness and ability to make a commitment to the Ministry. 7) Possess good public relations and customer service skills. Amount of Time Required: 6-12 hours 3 or r times per year for seasonal decorations 2-5 hours per week during summer months for floral arrangers Retreats or seminars 4 to 6 hours per year Ministry Fair 2 to 6 hours per year Other Altar related activities varies Length of Commitment: Three years Responsible to: The Decorations and Floral Arrangement Co Coordinator.. 4
5 CHURCH FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS AND DECORATIONS COORDINATOR POSITION DESCRIPTION PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To beautify the Church with floral arrangements and decorations as appropriate to the Liturgical Seasonal in accordance with the directions given by the Liturgy Department of the Parish. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Weekly Floral arrangements for ordinary time Contact with Florist Develop calendars of floral arrangements. Work with Grower Coordinator during the season that g rowers are providing the services on a volunteer basis. Provide training for volunteers with florist. Work with staff and Wedding coordinator to meet their nee needs within guidelines established. Develop a plan including costs for approval annually. Provide for the watering of floral arrangements and green plants. Maintenance of green plants (cleaning, potting and repotting, fertilization) 2. Seasonal decorations Meet with the Planning Team to develop plans within each season (or the Liturgical Minister Volunteer Coordinator or other representative of the Planning Team) Meet with the florist and the Facilities Manager to develop details for executing the plan, get cost estimates from the florist and to be sure we are within budget. 5
6 Schedule times for decorations and schedule volunteers and florist staff around times that the church is available. Develop Seasonal Plans for reference by volunteers and for record keeping purposes. Take pictures for the record book. Take down decorations and to store them on a regular basis. 3. Other duties. Recruit, train and schedule volunteers. Participate in the Annual Ministry Fair. Do check requests for purchases for Floral Arrangements and Seasonal decorations. Maintain records of expenses so that budget is not exceeded. Attend the quarterly meetings of the Liturgical Coordinators and the twice annual meetings of all Liturgical Coordinators. Co Coordinators Co-Coordinators may be appointed by mutual agreement of the coordinator, and the Liturgy Minister Volunteer Coordinator with responsibilities divided between the Co-Coordinators. QUALIFICATIONS (Coordinators, Co-Coordinators and Coaches) 1. Possess the same basic qualifications as required for the Lector Ministry. 2. Have experience in the Lector Ministry at St. Joseph Catholic Church. 3. Leadership abilities 4. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 5. Interpersonal skills and problem solving skills. 6. Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets. 6
7 AMOUNT OF TIME REQUIRED On the average, 2-4 hours per week. LENGTH OF COMMITMENT: Three years RESPONSIBLE TO: The Liturgy Minister Volunteer Coordinator 7
8 SPIRITUALITY AND PRAYERS DECORATIONS AND FLORAL MINISTER SPIRITUALITY The spirituality of the these ministers is in working in the Sacred Worship Space in the presence of God The House of God is a beautiful place to be and it is a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility to beautify it. The Altar Minister Is a person of faith. Regularly and often ponders God's Word. Prays regularly and often. Practices good communication skills with others (truth, respect, dignity, etc.). PRAYER of Preparation Lord; make me an instrument of your service So others will see not me But Christ in me. May your spirit fill me and those who come to worship. May my greetings inspire those who attend So that they can participate in the fullness of the Eucharist And be anxious to return again. AMEN+ PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Lord, help me to live out to the fullest what I have heralded as the Way, the Truth and the Life by participating in the celebration of the Eucharist this day. I ask that my life be an open testimonial to all who observe my actions. May my speech echo the love of God and speak of the Lord s generosity and patience. May I become and instrument of your peace and love to my family and all whom I encounter. I ask this through Jesus Christ, my Brother and my Lord. Amen+ 8
9 GLOSSARY OF TERMS ALTAR PLATFORM: The sacred area where most of the ceremonial actions of the Mass are carried out. It contains the Altar Table, the Presider s Chair, the Ambo, and the credence table. ALTAR TABLE: The large table in the center of the Altar Platform (previous called the Sanctuary at which the Presider celebrates the Eucharist. AMBO: The pulpit on the Altar Platform from which the Lector and the Priest proclaim the word of God. CHALICE OR CUP: The sacred vessels that hold the Blood of Christ. CIBORIUM: The sacred vessels that hold the Body of Christ. CORPORAL: A white linen (or other fine cloth) that is folded and placed on the Celebrant s Chalice. It is placed on the Altar Table to catch any fragments of the Body or the Blood of Christ that may fall on it during the consecration or communion. CREDENCE TABLE: Holds the sacred vessels and other items needed during the Mass. This is located on the Alter Platform on the wall behind the Ambo side. CUP TABLE: This table is located in the back hallway. It holds the tray for the empty cups and the purificators. NAVE: The area of the church where the congregation or assembly is seated. NARTHEX: The vestibule of the church, located in the back between the Nave and the old Parish Hall. PURIFICATOR: A white cloth used for the cleansing of the sacred vessels. SACRISTAN: Worship Ministers who prepare the sacred vessels and the books for the church services. They are responsible for taking care of these items after Mass. 9
10 SACRISTY: There are two Ministry Sacristy: Where ministers sign-in and where Altar Table Servers vest. This room is located off the Narthex. Vesting Sacristy: (located behind the altar platform) The priests and acolytes vest here. The Sacristans prepare the sacred vessels for Mass. Lectors report here to pick up their books and any special instructions. Ushers bag and deposit Offertory Collection in the closet safe. TABERNACLE: This structure houses the Body of Christ. It is located in the small chapel on the ambo side of the church. 10
