2 History of the republic of india January 26, 1950 was the first day in the history of the Republic of India. Following independence from Britain on August 15, 1947, India was still part of the British Commonwealth. For the next three years, leaders from different communities gathered to write the constitution, the system of laws and principles that would guide India. The constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949 and came into effect on January 26, 1950, exactly 20 years after the call for complete independence or self-rule (purna swaraj). Republic Day is a celebration of India becoming an independent nation and a day to remember the sacrifice of those who struggled for freedom Shraman Foundation
3 History of the republic of india India is a Federal Republic. In this form of government, power rests in the hands of the citizens. There is no king or queen. The people give power to leaders through elections. This makes India the largest democracy in the world! The president of India, who is head of state, is elected for a five-year term by the elected members of the federal and state parliaments (legislative bodies). 7 Republic Day is celebrated every year with a grand parade down Rajpath ( King s Way ), the most ceremonial boulevard in New Delhi that starts at the Presidential Residence (Rashtrapati Bhavan), runs through Vijay Chowk, the square in front of the Residence, past India Gate, a memorial for the soldiers of the Indian Army who fell between , and ends at the National Stadium. Presidential Residence India Gate Every year a leader from a foreign country is invited to attend the parade. The parade is marked by: Prime Minister laying a wreath at Amar Javan Jyoti ( Flame of Immortal Soldier ) at India Gate Awards given for bravery to members of armed forces and to civilians Parade of India s armed forces Floats displaying cultures of states and union territories Parade of school children performing cultural dances January 29: bands from each wing of the armed forces play songs in the Beating Retreat ceremony to conclude the festivities Shraman Foundation 7
