1 Journey through the Old Testament Bible Survey of II Samuel Introduction: In the Hebrew Bible the books of 1 and 2 Samuel are one book. 2 Samuel continues the story of David. The story starts in I Samuel 16 and doesn t end until 1 Kings 2. David reigns for 40 years; 7 years over the tribe of Judah and 33 years over the united kingdom of Israel. Important Text: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. II Samuel 7:12 This text points to the reality of Jesus Christ. Key Text: I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. II Samuel 6:22 Theme: Living with wild abandon for God. Divisions of Book: 1. David s Tears (II Samuel 1) 2. David s Triumphs (II Samuel 2-10) 3. David s Transgressions (II Samuel 11) 4. 2 1.0 David s Tears (II Samuel 1) In David s tears for Saul and his house there is no mention of self. There is no word of Saul s self-will, only his bravery and nobility. How does David remain selfless? He does it by living in wild abandon for God. God s interests were David s interests. God s commands were David s actions. God s desires were David s longings. He lived only for God. That s the secret of self forgetfulness. 2.0 David s Triumphs. (II Samuel 2-10) 2.1 David s triumphs politically. (II Samuel 2-5) David lives in wild abandon for God and inquires of the Lord (II Samuel 2:1) II Samuel 2:4 - David is anointed again. This has practical implications; the people are recognizing David as their king. But it also points us to the truth that we all need fresh experiences of God. David will have victory over Ish Bosheth because David is totally sold out to God. 5:1-3 David is made king of the entire kingdom. The Lord said to you, You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler. (II Samuel 5:2) God s promise to Abraham to make him into a great nation is realized. 3 2.2 David s triumphs spiritually. (II Samuel 6) David s Conviction (II Samuel 6) God has center place in all areas of his life. He brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The first attempt does not go well because the people do not obeying God s Word. God calls us to complete obedience. The second attempt is successful because they obey God s Word. Notice David s complete abandonment before God (II Samuel 6:22) Do you live with total abandon to God? Do you worship with total abandon? Do you give, serve, and obey with total abandon, not caring what others think but seeking to please God alone? David s Covenant (II Samuel 7) God promises David that his offspring will build a temple, his house will endure forever, and his throne will be established forever. All of this is answered in Jesus Christ. David asks God, Is this your usual way of dealing with man? Who am I, O sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, O sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign Lord? 4 2.3 David s triumphs militarily. (II Samuel 8, 9, 10) David expands Israel s territory from 6,000 square miles to 60,000 square miles. 3.0 David s Transgressions. (II Samuel 11, 24) David s transgressions arise out of 3 weaknesses. 3.1 David s persistent passions. (II Samuel 11) David had at least 8 wives and 10 concubines. 3.2 David s poor parenting. (II Samuel 13-15) David spends more time building his kingdom than he does building a home. David is unable to correct his child of sins he himself is guilty of. 3.3 David s prevailing pride. (II Samuel 24) 4.0 David s Troubles. (II Samuel 12-24) 4.1 David has trouble with his kinsmen. (II Samuel 15-19) During David s troubles he is humble and penitent. If I find favour in the Lord s eyes he will bring me back and let me see it (the ark) and his dwelling place again. But if he says, I am not pleased with you. Then I am ready. 5 Can we accept suffering as a tool through which God s purposes for us are refined and our character disciplined? Consider it pure joy my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4) See Psalm 3,4, 61, 62, 63, and David has trouble with his kingdom. (II Samuel 20) But the question remains: Given David s sin with Bathsheba, why is he still called a man after God s own heart? David is a man after God s own heart because even in the midst of his sin he totally abandons his pride and self sufficiency and says, I have sinned against the Lord. Notice Nathan s reply, The Lord has taken your sin away. For Group Discussion: Do you know someone who lives with total abandonment for God? What would living with wild abandon for God look like for you? Pray together. For Personal Reflection: Is there a sin that you have not confessed to God? Is there a persistent passion that you will not give up for God? Today is the day. Pray to God. Tell him that you want to live completely and only for him.
