8 Why a responsible sourcing scheme? Study with Arup (2011) to understand the factors that influence construction professionals when considering material options in sustainable buildings. Sustainability does come into it a lot more now than it did 5-10 years ago, and I would use it as a deciding factor if all else was equal. Scale: 1 very weak influence; 6 very strong influence

9 Why a responsible sourcing scheme? Materials sustainability is a developing agenda, and practitioners acknowledge they need more information and knowledge to understand it better. Interview and survey results indicate that, although understanding of the field of responsible sourcing is still developing, the existence of a responsible sourcing scheme would be welcomed as a way to ensure the sustainability of purchased materials, and to improve clarity and consistency of approach in the industry.

10 Market drivers for responsible sourcing Green Public Procurement Guidelines UK Government sets target that 25% of construction products be sustainably sourced Green Rating Systems (LEED, BREEAM) introducing points for RSS encouraging development Contractors and developers looking for responsibly sourced products (e.g. Skanska zero unsustainable materials) Other industries/ competing materials have RSS:

13 EPDs and RSS: Why have both? Providing reliable and transparent information EPDs provide quantitative information about the environmental impact of concrete and are used in performing life-cycle-analysis of buildings or projects. RSS provides qualitative information that identifies and promotes responsible practices throughout the concrete supply chain addressing both social and environmental impacts of the business. Together they provide a complete look at the material and the company; fulfilling requests for reliable and transparent data
