1 SPRING 2017 ART HISTORY COURSES ARTH History of Western Art I TBA, TR 1:15-2:30, MM 214 This course explores major monuments in art history from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages, including everything from cave paintings the first known images made by humans to the sculpture of ancient Greece and Rome, to the soaring cathedrals of the Middle Ages. We will study the interplay of works of art and architecture with their various physical, historical, social, and cultural contexts. ARTH History of Western Art I E. Petit, T 4:25-7:10, MM 214 From cave paintings to Gothic cathedrals, this course will explore the major periods in Western Art from Prehistoric through Medieval times. This course will cover roughly 25,000 years of history, culture and art, and will serve as an introduction to the study of art history. Cultures and periods to be covered in this course include: Prehistoric Europeans, Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Aegeans, Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, Byzantines, and Europeans from the Middle Ages. HNRS: ARTH 105 H01 History of Western Art I A. House, TR 1:15-2:30, MM 329 This is the Honors section of ARTH 105. This course explores major monuments in art history from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages, including everything from cave paintings the first known images made by humans to the sculpture of ancient Greece and Rome, to the soaring cathedrals of the Middle Ages. We will study the interplay of works of art and architecture with their various physical, historical, social, and cultural contexts.

2 ARTH 106 History of Western Art II B. Collins, TR 8:30-9:45, MM214 This lecture course traces the major developments in Western painting, sculpture and architecture from the Renaissance to the present. Individual works will be examined for what they tell us about the artists who made them, the patrons who commissioned them, and the cultural circumstances they reflected and addressed. ARTH 325 History of Baroque Art A. House, TR 10:05-11:20, MM 329 From Caravaggio and Bernini to Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Velazquez, this course covers the history of art in Europe in the period We will also consider art produced in areas of European colonization, including Latin America and Asia. Selected topics include the establishment of the art academy, the painting and architecture of the Counter-Reformation, and the development of new genres of still life and landscape. ARTH 330 History of 19 th Century Art A. Graciano, TR 2:50-4:05, MM 239 Class lectures will provide an overview of nineteenth-century European painting and sculpture, following the lives and works of major artists, changes in style and taste against the backdrop of a broader cultural and historical context. The course will cover the following major stylistic periods: Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism.

3 ARTH 337 History of Modern Architecture L. Brandt, MW 3:55-5:10, MM 239 This course will survey the history of modern and contemporary architecture, spanning from the late nineteenth century through the present day and focusing on the origins, development, dissemination, and legacy of the Modern movement. We will consider the aesthetic, social, economic, cultural, and political origins and impact of twentieth-century architecture and urbanism. ARTH 341 History of American Art II L. Burgess, MW 2:20-3:35, MM 239 This course explores American art from the 1820s to the 1940s. Students study visual culture produced in support of or in response to broader social, historical, and cultural events such as the Civil War, industrialization, immigration, the Great Depression, the major American wars, and the Cold War. Painting, sculpture, photography, and the decorative arts are examined. ARTH 342 Contemporary American Art B. Collins, TR 11:40-12:55, Gambrell 250 This is a lecture/discussion class on the subject of American painting and sculpture from the 1930s to the present. We will be tracing the broad developments in American art from the late Modernist to the Post- Modernist eras as manifest in the work of its leading movements, artists and critics. Individual works will be examined for what they tell us about both the artists who made them and the culture of which they were or are a part.

4 ARTH Topic: Alternative Exhibitions in the 18 th and 19 th Centuries A. Graciano, M 2:20-5:05, MM 329 This will be a seminar-style course that discusses the exhibitionary events (from the 18 th through the 20 th centuries) that were the forerunners and pioneers of contemporary solo shows, single-artist-centered museums, blockbuster exhibitions, artists installations, open studios, protest exhibits/performances, pop-up exhibits (and shops), independently curated and globally significant biennial displays. ARTH Topic: 20 th Century Chinese Art A. Wangwright, TR 8:30-9:45, MM 239 Is it possible for traditional Chinese ink painting to be modern? Can propaganda posters of Chairman Mao be considered art? Do the visual arts have the power to rebuild or rebrand a nation? Answer these questions and more in this selective survey covering the visual arts from the end of China s final dynasty through the turn of the present century. The course emphasizes understanding artworks as products of the particular cultural and historical contexts in which they were made. ARTH Topic: The Period Film S. Felleman, MW 3:55-5:10, MM 314 and W 5:30-8:00 (screening), MM329 In tandem with the Columbia Museum of Art's "CUT!: Costume and the Cinema" exhibition, explore how and to what ends films evoke historical periods. Consider subgeneres including historical films, literary adaptations, and biopics, examine scholarship on the "heritage film" and "costume drama," and investigate the preproduction work of research, production of settings and costumes, and issues of style, stardom, and reception. Meets with FAMS 470 Genre Studies.

5 ARTH 535 History of Modern Painting B. Collins, TR 11:40-12:55, MM 214 This is the graduate section of ARTH 342. It is open only to graduate students. ARTH 539/735 Topic: Modern Art: Art in Germany Since 1937 P. Chametzky, TR 4:25-5:40, MM 239 This course will study visual art in Germany from the Nazi period, through the Cold War (West and East), to the present. Emphasis will be placed on visual art's role in defining German identity, Germany s place in the world, and coming to terms with both the past and present. ARTH 542 History of American Architecture L. Brandt, MW 2:20-3:35, MM 310 Using the University of South Carolina s Columbia campus as a case study, this course will explore the history of American architecture in the midtwentieth century. Because mid-century architecture is currently facing significant threats of demolition, redevelopment, and aesthetic prejudice nationwide, this course will also have a significant preservation angle.

6 ARTH 545/745 Topic: Modern Chinese Art A. Wangwright, TR 10:05-11:20, MM 239 Is it possible for traditional Chinese ink painting to be modern? Can propaganda posters of Chairman Mao be considered art? Do the visual arts have the power to rebuild or rebrand a nation? To answer these questions and more, we will survey the visual arts of modern China from the end of its final dynasty through the turn of the present century. The course emphasizes understanding artworks as products of the particular cultural and historical contexts in which they were made. Course content is similar to ARTH 390, but participants of 545/745 are expected to actively discuss additional readings and write a research paper. ARTH 569 Topic: History of Experimental Film S. Felleman, MW 12:00-2:00 pm (includes screening), MM 314 Discover a parallel history of film created by artists who have seen and explored possibilities other than the dominant (illusionistic narrative) in the medium. Survey some of the most important currents in that history, from abstraction, poetry and radical revolt in avant-garde practices of the 1920s to psychodrama, cameraless film, experiments in animation and collage, Underground, Structuralist and found footage film, and more. Meets with MART and FAMS
