4 Instructions Cut in Place Instructions 1. Hoop your fabric and backing. 2. Sew the pattern/placement. PHOTO 1 3. Place a piece of appliqué fabric over the pattern/placement so that it is completely covered. 4. Sew the trim stitch/tackdown. 5. Carefully cut away the excess appliqué fabric.photo 2 6. Sew the remainder of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. PHOTO GENERAL FREESTANDING LACE GUIDELINES HANDY HINTS: DO NOT RINSE away all of the stabilizer for a stiffer lace. Note that the thread may appear a shade darker if stabilizer is not removed completely. If you happen to wash too much out, easily re-stiffen by diluting some stabilizer scraps in water and dipping the item in the solution. Drying Lace: Lay lace piece with right side down to dry. This will minimize the tendancy for the lace to curl. SUPPLIES: Embroidery Thread: Use the same embroidery thread in the bobbin as the needle. Needles: Use an Organ 80/12 Titanium needle for extended needle life. Stablilizer: Use water-soluable stabilizer or film water-soluble stabilizer. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS 1. Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer. 2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the design of your choice. 3. Stitch the design. 4. Remove the hoop from the machine and the design from the hoop. Trim excess stabilizer from the design. 5. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow it to dry. Diagram 1 Handy tips: A pair of tweezers, hemostats, stiletto or a tiny crochet hook can be extremely helpful when inserting the buttonettes into the eyelets. (Please see Diagram 1 for explanation of buttonette and eyelet and hinge line.) Insert the tip of the tweezers, hemostats or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the buttonette and pull through the eyelet. A stiletto could be used to push the buttonette through the eyelet. The lace looks best when left to dry completely. Be sure to flatten the piece out entirely and allow ample time to dry. If item becomes too limp to work with, dissolve scrap pieces of water-soluble stabilizer in warm water and apply to the item to re-stiffen. Alternatively you can iron the appliqué pieces on the wrong side while applying spray starch. After ironing, spray again with starch and allow to dry completely. Alternatively there is a hole left in the back of the building so that a standard wired Christmas light can be inserted. Quilt Shop Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines (page 4) and Cut In Place Instructions (page 4) and stitch the eleven pieces required as listed in the summary above. Attach the back wall to the left and right side walls. First, insert the three buttonettes of the back wall into the eyelets of the left side wall. Photo A Attach the foundation by inserting the buttonettes on the foundation into the eyelets of the back wall, left side wall and right side wall. Attach the inner wall to the left and right entryway walls by inserting the three buttonettes of the entryway walls into the three eyelets on either side of the shop door on the inner wall. Photo B Photo B Attach the windows wall to the inner wall by inserting the five buttonettes of the windows wall into the eyelets found in the center of the inner wall. Photo C Attach the windows wall to the entryway walls by inserting the three buttonettes of each entryway wall into the eyelets on the interior of the windows wall. 6 Instructions **Note: This will be creating the curved awning of Photo D the quilt shop. You may want to lightly dampen the Windows wall to make shaping and attaching the wall easier. Photo D Attach the front wall assembly to the rest of the building by inserting the three buttonettes of the inner wall into the three eyelets of the left side wall. Repeat this process with the right side wall. Attach foundation to the front wall assembly by inserting the buttonettes of the foundation into the eyelets of the windows wall. Photo E Join the two panels of the roof by inserting the buttonettes of the left roof panel into the eyelets of the right roof panel. Attach the quilt shop sign by inserting the buttonettes of the quilt shop sign into the eyelets of the roof panels. Both eyelets are below the snow. Be sure to attach the sign to the correct eyelets. The sign, when affixed appropriately, should force the roof into the angle of the bottom of the sign. Photo F Attach the roof assembly to the building beginning by inserting the upper buttonettes of the front and back walls into the eyelets of the roof panels. Continue down the slope of the roof, alternating sides for stability. Finish by inserting the buttonettes of the left and right walls into the eyelets of the roof panels. Your Free Standing Lace Quilt Shop is complete! Photo E Photo F To assemble the Lamp Post Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines Photo H (page 4) and stitch the two pieces required as listed in the summary. Photo G Immediately after you have rinsed the stabilizer away from the lamp post, insert the four buttonettes into the four eyelets along the length of the column. Insert a pen or pencil into the newly formed tube and then allow to dry. This will create the round post of the lamp post. Photo G After the lace is dry, remove the pen or pencil and begin assembling the lamp fixture portion of the lamp post. Attach the lower pairs of buttonettes to their corresponding eyelets. See Photo H for tool placement to ensure the buttonettes are to the inside of the lamp fixture. Complete the lamp fixture by attach the four buttonettes along the open edge to the four corresponding buttonettes. Photo I Photo J Photo I You may need to shape the lamp fixture if it flattened during assembly. Photo J Secure the lamp fixture to the lamp post by inserting the buttonette along the bottom of the lamp fixture into the eyelet at the top of the post. Photo K Apply light pressure to the top and bottom of the lamp fixture to create the desired paneled shape. Photo L Photo K Photo L Assemble the lamp post base by inserting the buttonettes of each panel to the eyelet of the very next panel. Insert the lamp post into the lamp post base with a gentle twisting motion. Your Lamp Post is now complete.
