1 ESL 770 Series Projected Beam Smoke Detector Installation Instructions U L LISTED The ESL 770 projected beam smoke detector consists of an optical transmitter and receiver and a control panel. A pulsed infrared beam is projected from the transmitter to the receiver. The beam is then continuously monitored by the control panel for interference caused by smoke. When smoke is present in the beam for 8 to 10 seconds, the detector sends an alarm. The detector is especially useful in applications where hallways and longer rooms need coverage. One detector can be used in place of several spot detectors. The detector is designed for use with a 24VDC auxiliary power supply from a main control panel. The detector can be configured for reflected beam operation for use in difficult applications. See Using eflected Beam Operation.! WANING It is important that you read, understand, and follow these instructions. If you have questions, call Sentrol at This document is intended for licensed electricians/ alarm installers. Sentrol cannot provide technical support to unqualified persons. Failure to properly install, test, and maintain a smoke detector system may cause it to fail resulting in loss of life and/or property. Selecting a Location Selecting a suitable location is critical to the operation of smoke detectors. To determine how many detectors you need and where to place them, you should follow the guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA 72). In addition to NFPA 72, use the following guidelines to determine the best location for the detector components: The transmitter, receiver, and 770 control panel mount directly to walls. The 770 control panel should be located for easy access. The 770 control panel must be located so that the cable connecting it to the receiver is between 15 feet and 330 feet in length. Mount the transmitter and receiver at least 17 inches away from walls and ceilings as shown in Figure 1. The range for the transmitter/receiver is 33 to 330 feet. At 330 feet the beam has a diameter of approximately 10 feet and the detection coverage on either side of the beam is 25 feet. The maximum total coverage area is 16,500 square feet (50 feet x 330 feet). oute cables away from existing electrical cables and switchgear. The transmitter and receiver must be in clear view of each other. The receiver must be installed where strong light sources, artificial or natural, DO NOT project directly into the receiver lens. Parts List The following parts are included with the detector: Optical transmitter with clear lens Optical receiver with dark lens 770 control panel 2 angle brackets 4 screws Plastic control panel key Plastic test filter Important: In addition to the parts provided, you will need four screws for mounting the 770 control panel. 17in min. 25ft max. 50ft max. 50ft max. 17in min. 25ft max. 4 Using an LED Alignment Meter to Align the Transmitter and eceiver An alignment meter is optional and can be ordered through your distributor. Use the following steps to align the transmitter and receiver using the alignment meter: 1. Use a 3-conductor cable to connect the alignment meter to the 770 control panel as follows: Connect this on the alignment meter + V (red) +24V supply -V (black) -24V supply Meter O/P (yellow) To this on the circuit board in the detector control panel + Test meter terminal 2. Place the alignment meter so the LED indicator is within view of the transmitter. 3. Adjust the transmitter vertically and horizontally until you achieve the fastest blinking rate on the test meter LED. The LED should be on steadily when the alignment is successful. 4. At the 770 control panel, adjust the Signal Level potentiometer counter clockwise until the Sig Hi LED goes off. Both Sig Hi and Sig Lo LEDs should be off. 5. Set the eset/test switch to the OFF position. Both LEDs must be off before you set the eset/test switch to off or the drift compensation will not function. 6. Wait at least 45 seconds for the system to self calibrate before performing any tests. Testing the Detector Use the following steps to test the smoke detection: 1. Hold the plastic test filter in the beam path. After approximately 9 seconds, the alarm relay should switch and the red alarm LED should light. The alarm LED is located on the front cover of the 770 control panel. 2. emove the test filter and the alarm should reset after approximately 4 seconds. If the 770 control panel is set to manual reset, the alarm does not automatically reset. See esetting the Alarm. Use the following steps to test the trouble relay and indicator: 1. Block the beam completely. After about 10 seconds, the trouble relay should switch and the yellow trouble LED should light. The trouble LED is located inside the 770 control panel. 2. Clear the beam. After approximately 4 seconds, the trouble LED should reset. Using a Voltmeter to Align the Transmitter and eceiver Use the following steps to align the transmitter and receiver using a voltmeter: 1. Connect the leads of a DC voltmeter (set to 10V range) to the + and Test Meter terminals in the 770 control panel. 2. Adjust the transmitter vertically and horizontally until the maximum voltage is measured on the voltmeter. Maximum voltage is approximately 5V. The reading should be approximately 2.6V when no signal is present. 3. Carefully tighten the two thumbwheel screws on the transmitter securely. Troubleshooting Use the following steps to determine the cause of a trouble indication: Verify that the Test/eset switch in the 770 control panel is in the OFF position allowing normal operation. Check for beam blockage. If 93% or more of the beam is blocked for approximately ten seconds, a trouble condition is indicated. Check the drift compensation. When the detector runs out of drift compensation, a trouble condition is indicated. If the detector is out of compensation, the alignment reading from the test meter outputs will be significantly lower than 4.1V. Verify that power is present at the detector control panel and transmitter. Loss of power will cause a trouble condition. Check beam alignment. Incorrect alignment may cause a trouble condition. 4
5 Using eflected Beam Operation The detector can be used in a reflected beam configuration where the transmitter and receiver heads are mounted adjacent to each other and the beam is reflected off one or more prisms mounted on the opposite wall. eflected beam operation is used for applications where access to the opposite wall is restricted or wiring is difficult. In addition to the installation instructions (See Installing the Detector), use the following instructions to configure the detector for reflected beam operation: 1. Set the sensitivity switch to 50%. See Setting the Switches. 2. Mount the transmitter and receiver heads adjacent to one another as closely as possible. 3. Mount prism(s) on the opposite wall. Prism(s) should be mounted at right angles to the beam. There must be a clear line of sight between the transmitter head, prism(s) and receiver head. For more information, see the prism installation instructions. 4. Once the system is aligned and tested, test the reflected beam operation as follows: -Block the beam in front of the prisms. The trouble LED should light. -If no trouble is indicated, the beam may be being reflected via a surface other that the prisms. Ordering Prisms Call to order prisms. The number of prisms required for a reflected beam application varies depending on the beam range as described in the following table: Beam ange 6.5 to 82 feet 1 82 to 115 feet to 148 feet 6 Prisms required esetting the Alarm The alarm may be reset using any of the following methods: Set the Alarm Latch switch to open for automatic reset. Use the eset/test switch on the 770 control panel. Install a remote reset switch. See Figure 4. emove power to the 770 control panel for 1 second.
