1 DUAL MASTER DEGREE PROGRAM PROPOSAL PUBLIC HEALTH AND MEXICAN AMERICAN STUDIES The dual degree in Public Health and Mexican American Studies will be granted upon the completion of a minimum of 65 units in Public Health and Mexican American Studies. The dual degree program allows a student to earn a Master of Science degree in Mexican American Studies (M.S.) and a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in three years. Mexican American Studies (MAS) Requirements The Mexican American Studies & Research Center offers an interdisciplinary M.S. program with the option of an examination or a thesis for degree completion. Thirty-four (34) units are required for the M.S. in Mexican American Studies: a minimum of 19 core units, 9 elective units from the Latino Health Strand, and the choice of a 6 unit thesis or 6 units of electives and an oral examination. One of the M.P.H. required concentration courses may be used to satisfy an M.S. elective requirement. For the Master of Science, individuals must select either the thesis or examination option. For the examination option, the remaining 15 units required to complete the dual degree will be satisfied by selectives that have been approved by both programs. When the M.S. thesis option is chosen, the six thesis units will be completed according to guidelines specified in the M.A.S. degree requirements. The six thesis units may be used to satisfy six M.P.H. selective units if approved by the student s MEZCOPH advisor.
