2 Health Services Management Program (HSM-AS) The Health Services Management program is designed to prepare student for an exciting career in the ambulatory healthcare setting. The responsibilities of the health services manager is both rewarding and challenging. Among many duties, it is the responsibility of the health services manager to make sure that patients who come through their doors receive the best possible healthcare experience while at the same time tending to the efficient running of the healthcare facility. Graduates of the HSM program work in the administrative support areas of the health field. Positions include professional duties in hospitals, physician s offices, insurance companies, billing departments, pharmaceutical companies, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. Health services management professionals have little or no direct patient contact, but provide the day-to-day business and administrative services behind the scenes. Professionalism along with excellent communication skills and computer literacy are important for success in the field of healthcare management. The Health Services Management degree awards 60 college credits which can be transferred to the fouryear Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Administration and Supervision with a Health Care Management Concentration which is offered here at Pensacola State. Individuals already working in healthcare will find the Health Services Management degree to be a beneficial tool which prepares them for advancement into management positions. Individuals with no experience working in healthcare will be qualified for a position at a physician s office other ambulatory care center beginning at entry level with the knowledge and degree needed to work their way up to office management. Q: What are some typical tasks in this career? The duties you will perform will depend on your experience in the field of healthcare administration. Consult with patients regarding administrative matters Oversee scheduling of staff, physicians and patients Coordinate the hiring, training, and supervision of employees Organize and lead staff meetings Conduct employee evaluations Oversee the inventory and equipment needs and maintenance within the office Function as a buffer between the physicians and the staff Handle disputes between staff members Handle patient complaints Create and maintain office policies and procedures Prepare quarterly financial reports Prepare payroll Serve as privacy officer Other general administrative duties such as greeting patients at the front desk, scheduling patient appointments, answering telephone calls, billing and collections, processing insurance claims, and posting accounts receivables to name a few.
