R K Pachauri Director General TERI Rajiv Sharma Chairman and Managing Director - REC Millions and millions of people do not see light after the sun goes down. Lighting a Billion Lives is in response to this unfortunate state of affairs in the 21st century. The initiative makes it possible for people to get clean, healthy and adequate light in their homes without any pollution or emission and at a cost that is entirely affordable. REC finds itself very proud because it has directed its CSR funds to the most deprived communities through TERI to make solar lanterns available to them. These are not only used for providing lighting to the village community but has also resulted in women empowerment. We are very proud to be associated with TERI and will provide our support even in the future. 5 >
According to the Census of India (2011), more than 79 million families depend on kerosene for lighting while more than 120 million rely on firewood for cooking their regular meals. Most of these reside in rural areas of the country... < 6
TERI initiated the Lighting a Billion Lives campaign in 2008 to enable rural communities across the world to access clean lighting solutions. The campaign started with dissemination of solar lanterns embedded in a unique entrepreneurial service delivery model. 7 >
The Project Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd. supported Lighting a Billion Lives campaign of TERI for 66 villages spread across Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. All the villages were selected on the basis of electrification status, kerosene consumption and availability of rural entrepreneurs. Solar Charging Stations (SCS) were established in all these villages with a charging capacity of 50 lanterns each. < 8
TERI field staff and local NGOs selected 66 completely un-electrified villages in Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra for implementation of the project. SCS comprises 50 solar lanterns that are recharged during the day and rented out in the evening to communities in lieu of a nominal fee. 9 >
Entrepreneur-driven Service Delivery The entrepreneur not only operates the SCS on a daily basis but also looks after the regular maintenance and upkeep of the enterprise. TERI trained its partner organizations to select the entrepreneurs who are capable of absorbing mildly technical training to troubleshoot and solve the regular issues in the SCS. < 10

After becoming an LaBL entrepreneur, Janmoni saw a stark increase in her rapport with the community. This was also because she holds together a women Self-Help-Group (SHG) that assists rural communities in different ways. 13 >
