Exudate Management Matters
The Challenge o Chronic W The burden of chronic wound care on health care systems is significant. The aging population, rising incidence of obesity, prevalence of diseases such as diabetes, and other factors contribute to the rising number of chronic wounds and the costs for treating them. Changes in reimbursement policies have exerted even more pressure to improve outcomes while cutting costs increasingly, facilities are challenged to do more with less. 3M Exudate Management Solutions 2
of Wound Care Wound care is complex, requiring clinicians to adapt dressing selection and procedures to accommodate changing levels of exudate and difficult body contours. Wound care dressings are available with a range of abilities to manage exudate, but the multitude and complexity of options can further complicate decision making. Excess exudate leads to unscheduled or more frequent dressing changes, complications and delayed wound healing which is frustrating and can impact clinicians confidence. 2 Wounds are often distressing and can impose a significant burden on patients activities of daily living, due to: Pain or discomfort Odor and soiling of dressing, bedding and clothing Infection Delayed healing Prolonged hospitalization The Right Solutions for Optimal Wound Healing 3M Exudate Management Solutions make it easier for you to maintain the moisture balance needed for optimal wound healing. Tegaderm brand wound care dressings are available in a range of sizes, shapes and fluid handling capacities to help you manage complex and difficult-to-dress wounds with confidence. Some of our other brands including 3M Medical Tapes, 3M Cavilon Professional Skin Care products, and 3M Coban 2 Layer Compression Systems also support the comfortable, effective wound care you and your patients deserve. The staggering cost of care for chronic non-healing wounds is greater than $50 billion/year in the U.S. alone. 1 Effective exudate management can reduce time to healing, dressing change frequency and nursing input, thereby optimizing health care efficiency. 2 1 Steven S. Gale, MD, FACS et al, DOMINATE Wounds, Wounds 2013; 15(12): M Romanelli, K Vowden, D Weir. Exudate Management Made Easy. Wounds International 2010: 1(2): Available from 3
There s Comfo in S Improving Your Patients Quality of Life We are guided by the belief that simple is better than complex and comfort is key. You can positively impact your patients health and quality of life by providing efficient, effective wound care that lets them live more comfortably. Patients are more satisfied with the overall experience when their daily activities are not disrupted by pain, leakage or other complications and may become more engaged in managing their own care. Be confident you are delivering the best possible care by choosing Tegaderm brand wound care dressings designed to work the way you need them to so you can focus on other areas of care. Tegaderm brand wound care dressings are clinically proven to adequately manage exudate. 4
fort Simplified Wound Care Making Your Job Easier Backed by world-class research and development, 3M has an unparalleled ability to connect people, insights, science and technology to create wound care dressings that meet patient and clinician challenges to improve quality of care. For example, dressings are designed to intuitively adapt to changing levels of exudate, so they are appropriate for almost any wound. This versatility minimizes the guesswork of dressing selection and reduces the number of products you have to stock and carry because you can do more with less. The intuitive design makes them easy to use and easy to teach. The 3M SM Health Care Academy offers a wide range of education and professional development to help you stay current in an environment of continuous change. Clinically Proven to Provide Better Overall Value Tegaderm brand wound care dressings have proven over and over again to provide effective fluid handling, moisture vapor transmission (breathability), and long wear times making them a better overall value. Long wear time reduces the unnecessary costs of frequent dressing changes. Effective exudate management minimizes the costs of complications. By standardizing on one brand of dressings, facilities can potentially increase efficiency and consistency of care for more predictable and reliable outcomes. 5
3M Solutions for Effective Exudate Management The primary goals of effective exudate management include achieving the moist wound environment needed for optimal healing and protecting periwound skin. Wound care dressings are the primary option for managing exudate. Designed with patients and clinicians in mind, 3M Tegaderm High Performance Foam and 3M Tegaderm Superabsorber dressings absorb and retain fluid to help you achieve the right moisture balance for any level of exudate. Tegaderm brand wound care dressings deliver a variety of benefits for an even better experience, such as: Highly breathable Tegaderm film promotes moisture evaporation and improved securement A waterproof, sterile barrier to external contaminants including liquids, bacteria and viruses* Long wear times minimize frequency of dressing changes Effective retention of fluid, even under compression Conforms to body contours and flexes with patient movement to help prevent leakage and improve comfort Adhesive dressings balance reliable securement with gentleness to skin Easy to apply and remove 3M Tegaderm Absorbent Clear Acrylic Dressings Novel absorbent acrylic polymer pad technology designed to handle low to moderate wound drainage Transparent dressing allows for wound monitoring without changing the dressing Adhesive Dressings Non-Adhesive Dressings Intuitively adjusts to changing levels of exudate to manage low to high draining wounds Spoke delivery system provides easy application of the 3M Tegaderm High Performance Foam Adhesive Dressings 3M Tegaderm Hydrocolloid Dressings Innovative design that provides a long wear time for partial- to fullthickness wounds with low to moderate exudate The inner layer of hydrocolloid adhesive absorbs exudate providing higher absorbency than the leading hydrocolloid in the first 48 hours 3M Tegaderm Superabsorber Dressings Versatile for a variety of wounds with moderate to high levels of exudate Absorbs and retains exudate in the dressing, even under compression Locks exudate away from the wound, protecting the wound edge from maceration 6 * In vitro testing shows that the transparent film of Tegaderm brand dressings provides a viral barrier from viruses 27 nm in diameter or larger while the dressing remains intact without leakage.
Managing Exudate Levels As with all aspects of health care, the foundation of effective wound care is ongoing patient assessment. You can give your patients the best possible care by selecting dressings based on the exudate level present at each dressing change to help maintain an optimal wound environment.
