1 WHEN YOUR CHILD EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS GET IN THEIR WAY Dulce Torres, LPC-S, BCC Cigna Children & Families Awareness Series March 2016

2 Participants will learn: Executive functioning are set of mental skills that can impact behavior and performance at school and at home on children and adolescents with learning and attention issues. During this presentation parents will learn and understand the role of Executive Functions and how deficits in this area affect the mental skills of a child. Parents will learn that executive skills are needed to formulate even the simplest plan to initiate a task. Parents will gain an understanding about how their child can function with a degree of independence once they have learned how to improve or manage their executive function skills of organizing, managing emotions, self-control, and initiative.

3 WHAT ARE EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS?

4 THE EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS ARE A SET OF PROCESSES THAT ALL HAVE TO DO WITH MANAGING ONESELF AND ONE'S RESOURCES IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A GOAL. IT IS AN UMBRELLA TERM FOR THE NEUROLOGICALLY-BASED SKILLS INVOLVING MENTAL CONTROL AND SELF- REGULATION. FROM LDONLINE.ORG

5 Executive Functions

6 In brief, neurotransmitters are like electrical impulses that send messages/hormones throughout our brains. These impulses (or synapses) regulate our behaviors. Research has shown that individuals with Attention and/or learning problems have deficits in the efficiency of these transmissions. The results are problems with executive functioning.

7 HOW ARE PARENTS, CAREGIVERS, & TEACHERS FEELING WHEN THEY SEE A LACK OF MOTIVATION, DISINTEREST?

9 SLOW DOWN

10 Having learning difficulties and / or Executive Functions deficits does not define the person. IT IS NOT WHO THEY ARE IS WHAT THEY HAVE.

11 Common problems: organization, communication, impulsivity, procrastination, tardiness, low frustration tolerance, etc.

12 Family is the place where children learn to understand and accept themselves. Is also the place to develop skills that don t come naturally to them. Love is unconditional however, accepting someone s impulsivity, disorganization, lack of self-control can be hard.

13 ORGANIZATION - Build a schedule or regular routine into daily living - Keeping a planner or reminders and checking constantly - Make a plan for the week with family on Sunday nights - Designating places in house for important documents - Create family identity

14 - Address angry outbursts with calm discussion - Family safe word - Create a weekly meeting that family can discuss problems and problem solve all together - Stay succinct (working memory)! COMMUNICATION

15 THINK OF IT THIS WAY - Don t focus on the negative - At the same time, be sure to reward the positive! - Reframe the situation in line with the behaviors you are noticing - See it from the other person s point of view - Don t immediately jump to punishment or punishing statements

16 SCHEDULE DOWN TIME - Take a break hire a baby sitter - Date nights - Take shifts watching kids - Reward yourself with activities you enjoy - For kids: if they get cranky after school give them space to give them time to process the day - Support groups to relate to others

17 STAYING CALM - Mindfulness - Relaxation strategies - Exercise to channel excess energy - Do activities as a family (vacations, outdoors activities, etc.)

18 - Educate the family about Your child s challenges - Increases awareness and empathy between family members - Easier to cope when things go awry EDUCATION
