4 Winston R. Wallin Presenting this year's Commencement Address is Winston R. Wallin, chairman of Medtronic, Inc. and retired president and CEO of the company. He will also be honored during Commencement with an Outstanding Achievement Award, the highest award the University of Minnesota bestows on its alumni. Win Wallin joined Medtronic in 1985, after spending the first 37 years of his career at The Pillsbury Company. During his tenure at Medtronic, he brought the company to new levels of achievement. The largest producer of implantable cardiac devices, Medtronic continues to further a commanding lead worldwide, thanks to a strong focus on research and development and an aggressive stance on marketing. Through acquisition and internal development, Medtronic has established a strong presence in key cardiac markets that hold exceptional long-term promise. Along with providing outstanding strategic direction to Medtronic, Wallin has been noted for a leadership style that emphasized teamwork, and a "unique style of working with people." At Medtronic he developed a "culture of collectively addressing conflicts and problems positively." A native of Minneapolis, Wallin was born in 1926 and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. After graduating, he joined Pillsbury's grain department, became president and CEO in 1977 and was elected vice chairman in February, During his years with Pillsbury, Wallin focused on the agri-products group and the restaurant businesses. Wallin has also provided guidance and leadership to numerous educational, community and business organizations by serving on their boards. He was chairman of the University of Minnesota's Cancer Center fund drive. He recently accepted the position of chairman of the Carlson School Board of Overseers. 3
