PAGE # 1 ISSN X SMS Based Secure (ID Based) Voting System Er.Nitin Agarwal [1], Ankit Kumar Omar [2], Barkha Sharma [3], Sonu Kumar Gupta [4] Abstract- The short message service technology is one of the most stable and suitable technology for mobile communication. There are many projects are using SMS based technology in the field of voting as well as education and controlling system. In this paper we are presenting about the voting system via SMS.Using SMS based voting system we can vote from our home just by sending a SMS in a particular format from our mobile.the entire voters will be provided with a unique password and identification number. The voting system receive this message and MICROCONTROLLER decode and verify the PIN number if both numbers matches.then the microcontroller accept the vote otherwise rejected the vote. A GSM MODEM is used to receive message from voters. And we are using a LCD to display the vote. We are using the underlying technology of GSM modem to build a SMS based voting system. The project is aimed to develop a password protected voting system. This project is designed with an idea to use the cell phone as a remote controller. The cell phones are now a day s used most widely and very commonly. Index Terms- Short Message Service [SMS], GSM Modem, MicrocontrollerPIC16F877A, AT Commands supporting GSM Modem, SIM 300, and LCD INTRODUCTION- SMS based voting system is a very important scheme for Voters. In India all earlier elections are done by using Ballot paper. Voting is a vital part of the democratic process. In India all earlier elections are done by using Ballot paper. This is the very lengthy and long time consuming process. This time the SMS based voting system can change the scenario of voting system. This project is designed with an idea to use the mobile hand set as a long distance remote controller. The mobile sets are now a day s used most widely and very commonly. The SMS can be sending to any mobile user of any service provider with no or a minimum charge. This system is designed using a GSM modem.gsm MODEM is interfaced with the microcontroller using serial interfacing. The GSM modem is configured as a receiver. The SMS sent by the user is written in a particular format. The controller receives the message and decodes it and identifies the task to be done. PIC Microcontroller is behaving like as the heart of the circuit and to connect the microcontroller to the GSM Modem serial interfacing is used. 35 single-word instructions All single-cycle instructions except for program branches (two-cycle). 2 Short messaging service (SMS) voting SMS appeared on the wireless scene in 1991 in Europe and since then, SMS has caused subtle but interesting changes in the society. One of such changes is the revolutionary development SMS has brought to voting and elections[1].this paper explores the use of SMS in voting.sms Voting solution, based on Voting service in SMS Studio, enables you to create various types of attractive SMS voting events such as-surveys, opinion polls,quizzes,voting etc. 3 How To Work- The working of SMS based voting system is based on the following parameters- 3.1 Microcontroller- A Microcontroller is a small computer on a single integrated circuit containing a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals. Program memory in the form of NOR Flash or OTP ROM is also often included on chip, as well as a typically small amount of RAM.Microcontrollers are designed for embedded applications, in contrast to the microprocessors used in personal computers or other general purpose applications. Microcontrollers are used in automatically controlled products and devices. In this project we are using a PIC 16F877A microcontroller. PIC 16F877A- PIC16f877a is a family of modified Harvard architecture microcontrollers made by Microchip Technology, derived from the PIC 1650 originally developed by General Instrument s Microelectronics Division. The name PIC initially referred to Peripheral Interface Controller. Key Features- High-Performance RISC CPU Lead-free; RoHS-compliant Operating speed: 20 MHz, 200 ns instruction cycle Operating voltage: V Industrial temperature range (-40 to +85 C) 15 Interrupt Sources (Pin Diagram of PIC16F877A)Fig.-2 Special Microcontroller Features Flash Memory: 14.3 Kbytes (8192 words) Data SRAM: 368 bytes Data EEPROM: 256 bytes Self-reprogrammable under software control In-Circuit Serial Programming via two pins (5V) Watchdog Timer with on-chip RC oscillator Programmable code protection Power-saving Sleep mode Selectable oscillator options In-Circuit Debug via two pins Peripheral Features 33 I/O pins; 5 I/O ports. Timer0: 8-bit timer/counter with 8-bit rescaler. Timer1: 16-bit timer/counter with prescaler. o Can be incremented during Sleep via external crystal/clock Timer2: 8-bit timer/counter with 8-bit period register, prescaler and postscaler. PAGE # 3 ISSN X o 16-bit Capture input; max resolution 12.5 ns o 16-bit Compare; max resolution 200 ns o 10-bit PWM Synchronous Serial Port with two modes: o SPI Master o I2C Master and Slave USART/SCI with 9-bit address detection 3.2 GSM MODEM-A GSM modem is a wireless modem that works with a GSM wireless network. A wireless modem behaves like a dial-up modem. The main difference between them is that a dial-up modem sends and receives data through a fixed telephone line while a wireless modem send sand receives data through radio waves. A GSM modem can be an external device or a PC Card PCMCIA Card. Typically, an external GSM modem is connected to a computer through a serial cable or a USB cable. A GSM modem in the form of a PC Card / PCMCIA Card is designed for use with a laptop computer. It should be inserted into one of the PC Card / PCMCIA Card slots of a laptop computer. Like a GSM mobile phone, a GSM modem requires a SIM card from a wireless carrier in order to operate. As mentioned in earlier sections of this SMS tutorial computers use AT modem. In addition to the standard AT commands, GSM modems support an extended set of AT commands. 3.3 AT Commands- AT commands stands for Attention Commands. AT commands are derived from the Hayes Commands set (or AT command set) from 1977 to control the 300-baud Hayes smart modem. They are a set of command-language or instructions that are sent to a cellular module to perform different action. These commands or instruction can be sent over a USB, serial, or other interface to the cellular modules from the main controller of the application. These extended AT commands are defined in the GSM standards. With the extended AT Commands, you can do things like: Reading, writing and deleting SMS messages. Sending SMS messages. Monitoring the signal strength. Monitoring the charging status and charge level of the battery. Reading, writing and searching phone book entries. Commonly used AT commands are two types- Basic Commands Extended Commands Commonly used AT commands are- ATD, ATA (to establish a data connection or voice connection to a remote modem). AT+CMGS (Send SMS message) AT+CMSS (Send SMS message from storage) AT+CMGL (List SMS messages) AT+CMGR (Read SMS messages) AT+CMGD(Delete SMS message) AT+CMGF=1(Instruct the GSM modem to operate in SMS text mode) AT+CMGL= ALL (List all the message) (GSM MODEM) Fig.-3 Commands to control modems. Both GSM modems and dial-up modems support a common set of standard AT commands. You can use a GSM modem just like a dial-up 3.4 SIM 300- SIM 300 is a Tri band GSM/GPRS engine that works on frequencies 900MHz, DCS 1800 and 1900MHz. With tiny configuration of 40mmx33mmx2.9mm, SIM 300 can meet almost all the space requirements in your applications, such as smart phone, PDA phone and other mobile devices. The physical interface to the mobile application is a 60 pin board t board connector, which provides all

PAGE # 4 ISSN X hardware interfaces between the module and customers boards except the RF antenna interfaces. 4 Programming used- We are using the microcontroller programming in c language. To burn the programming in microcontroller we are using a PIC PRO burner to burn the programming in to the microcontroller. 5 Conclusion- This report present the functional and constructional details of SMS based voting system using PIC16F877A.The system can be further modified to enhance its utility. Here we show some results and the working of the voting system as given below- Fig.-4 7LCD- A Liquid crystal display is a flat panel display, electronic visual display that uses the light modulating properties of liquid crystal. LCD's typically have 14 data pins and 2 for the LED backlight. Character LCDs use a standard 14-pin interface and those with backlights have 16 pins. There may also be a single backlight pin, with the other connection via Ground or VCC pin. The two backlight pins may precede the pin 1.The nominal backlight voltage is around 4.2V at 25 C using a VDD 5V capable model. Character LCDs can operate in 4-bit or 8-bit mode. In 4 bit mode, pins 7 through 10 are unused and the entire byte is sent to the screen using pins 11 through 14 by sending 4- bits) at a time. We create this voting system for only 10 users and we can increase it as per our requirement by chosen a microcontroller which has large memory. In this voting system we specify the individually ID format for the individual users. We are having 10 id formats like ID01, ID02,, ID10 for 10 users. To do a vote to a particular member user should be type this format in his mobile phone as shown below- IDO2V(CHOICE).Suppose user want to vote to 4th member then he types the format as showing in mobile phone and send to the specified number. Fig.-6 Fig.-5 After sending the message, GSM Modem is used to decode as well as receive the message. After receiving the message microcontroller checks the mobile number whether it is registered or not. The vote display in the LCD as shown figure-7.

Fig Future Aspects-The enhancements are: Number of candidates could be increased. Fig.-8 In the fig.8 we can see the vote obtained by P4, means the voting is done. Now if this user wants to vote again then the microcontroller rejected the vote and Already voted display in the LCD. Like figure-10. It can be interfaced with printer to get the hard copy of the result almost instantly from the machine itself. Once the result is on the server it could be relayed on the network to various offices of the election conducting authority.thus our project can make results availale at any corner of the world in a matter of seconds.
