Name CS/IT114: Exam #1, 10/20/2014 *** PLEASE TURN OFF ALL CELLPHONES *** You may use your crib sheet only (one HANDWRITTEN 8-1/2 x 11 page both sides). You will have the whole class period, unless you get time-and-a-half. Spend only about one minute per point on each question to complete the exam on time. 1. General Computer Knowledge (10 Points: a and b for 2 points each; c and d for 3 points each) a. For two of the four integer data types (byte, short, int, and long), give the size and range of possible values b. Give an example of a valid method call, using a variable name and method name c. Why do we have to compile computer programs? d. How is a command line interface (CLI) different from a graphical user interface (GUI)? 2. Java Identifiers and Their Meaning (10 Points) See part 2 + solutions on the CS110 practice exam: 3. Reserved Words, Classes, and Variables (20 Points) See also part 3 + solutions on the CS110 practice exam:
4. Expression Evaluation (20 Points) boolean b1 = true, b2 = false, b3 = rgen.nextboolean(); int int1 = 4; int int2 = 7; String s1 = "hey", s2 = "there"; // Show what is printed for at least 10 of the 12 following statements // NOTE: Assume rgen is a valid Random object System.out.println(int1 + int2); System.out.println(int1 / int2); System.out.println(int2 / (double) int1); System.out.println(b1 && b2); System.out.println(!b1 &&!b2); System.out.println(++int2 * 3 + int1 + s1 + s2); System.out.println(int2 - (0 - int1) + "9" + b1); System.out.println(int2 % int1 > 2 && (b3 b2)); System.out.println(s2 +!(b1 && b2) + int2 * 3); System.out.println(s1 + (int2++ < int1 * 2 && b2)); // a. // b. // c. // d. // e. // f. // g. // h. // i. // j. System.out.println(s2 +!(b1 b2) + (double)(int1));// k. System.out.println(s1 + (int2/int1 <= 1 b2)); // l. See also part 4 + solutions on the CS110 practice exam: 5. Spotting Compiler and Runtime Errors (20 Points) Spot and correct 10 errors in the following program. Start at the very beginning and move forward, looking for errors and assuming that your previous corrections apply. Public class VarsAndLits[ public void main(string[] args){ int i = 7, j = -8, k = 0.0; double d = 4.2 char c = f; boolean isiton = true; String str = 'Hello World'; Scanner scan = new Scanner (System.in); System.out.println(str + " " + (i + (j / 0) * (2.9 / d)) + c + "oo " + (isiton + false) + '\n');
6. Program Writing (20 Points) Write a program that will determine whether or not a triangle is a right triangle, based on the lengths of its sides. It should produce the following output (user input is included here, even though the program itself would not produce it). How long is side A? 8 How long is side B? 18 How long is side C? 20 What is this triangle called? My Triangle The sum of the squares of sides A and B is 388 The square of side C is 400 To call My Triangle a right triangle would be false
Answers: 1. Short Answer a. b. scan.nextint() OR str.length() OR account.getbalance() and so forth c. We have to compile computer programs because computers can only interpret machine language, not the language (such as Java) that we use to write the programs d. In a CLI, the user interacts with the computer by typing commands at a prompt, whereas in a GUI, the user has access to a visual interface of textual and graphical elements that the user can manipulate via the keyboard and mouse 2-4 See solutions on the CS110 practice exam: 4. Expression Evaluation a) 11 b) 0 c) 1.75 d) false 5. Detecting Errors e) false f) 28heythere g) 129true h) false i) theretrue24 j) heyfalse k) therefalse4.0 l) heyfalse import java.util.scanner; // must explicitly import Scanner class public class VarsAndLits{ // lowercase p and { instead of [ public static void main(string[] args){ // include static int i = 7, j = -8, k = 0; // set k equal to an int double d = 4.2; // semicolon at end char c = 'f'; // encase char literal in single quotes '' boolean isiton = true; String str = "Hello World"; // surround string literal with " " Scanner scan = new Scanner (System.in); System.out.println(str + " " + (i + (j / 1) * (2.9 / d)) + c + "oo " + (isiton && false) + '\n'); // don't divide j by zero // use boolean operator for boolean values // add closing for main
6. Writing Programs import java.util.scanner; public class TriangleTester { public static void main(string[] args) { int a, b, c; int squareab, squarec; String name; Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("How long is side A? "); a = scan.nextint(); System.out.print("How long is side B? "); b = scan.nextint(); System.out.print("How long is side C? "); c = scan.nextint(); scan.nextline(); System.out.print("What is this triangle called? "); name = scan.nextline(); System.out.println(); squareab = a * a + b * b; squarec = c * c; System.out.println("The sum of the squares of sides A and B is " + squareab); System.out.println("The square of side C is " + squarec); System.out.println("To call " + name + " a right triangle would be " + (squareab == squarec));
