1 1 Answers to Questions on Exodus 19:1-25 Exodus 20: Israel entered into a solemn agreement with God, a covenant relationship! As long as the Israelites kept their part of the agreement, things went well with them. When the Israelites violated the covenant, punishments befell them. 2. How long did it take Israel to journey from the Red Sea to Mt. Sinai? Three (3) months. 3. Define Decalogue. From the Greek Deka Logos, meaning ten words, which refers to the ten laws God gave to mankind through Moses on Mt. Sinai, commonly referred to as the Ten Commandments. The first four (4) laws outline man s moral obligations to God; the remaining six list man s responsibilities to his fellow men.

2 God defeated the Egyptians, bore Israel on eagles wings and brought Israel to Himself. 5. If Israel obeyed God s voice and kept God s covenant, then Israel would be God s people, possession from among all people, and a kingdom of Priests, a Holy nation. 6. What is plenary inspiration? Plenary inspiration is imparted from God. It is whole, lacking nothing. It is absolute and it is perfect. 7. Is Israel now God s chosen people? Why or why not? God s chosen people are now known as Christians, who have accepted Jesus Christ as the true son of God who was ordained before creation to be made in the image of man and through his death, burial and resurrection, absolve all who believe in Him of their sins.

3 Why did God in the Old Testament chose Israel to be his chosen people? God used the Hebrews to lay the foundation of a theocratic nation, founded on His laws, through which He could introduce the Messiah to the world. 9. Israel vowed, All that Jehovah hath spoken we will do. Did they keep this promise? Have you ever made a similar promise? How well have you kept this vow? (1) No, sadly, the Bible is replete with stories of Israel s apostacy. (2-3) Individual answers will vary in regard to the second question. 10. How was Israel to make ready for God s appearance on Mt. Sinai? They were to be sanctified; their clothing had to be washed, and they had to abstain from sex.

4 Why were boundaries set around the base of Mt. Sinai? It was off limits to the Israelites. If they so much as touched the base of the mountain they would die. They were not to come into the presence of God. 12. What is meant by the statement: Judaism is an ethical theism? The whole theology of Yahweh is based upon ethical and moral behavior, both in worshiping Him and in everyday life. What God wills and reveals to us defines what is right and wrong, and knowing God is knowing right from wrong.... and be Holy because I am Holy. Leviticus 11: How was God s arrival on Mt. Sinai made known? There was thunder and lightning and a dense cloud on the mountain. Fire and smoke engulfed the mountain and it shook violently as the horn sounded louder and louder.

5 Who went up into Mt. Sinai into the presence of God? Only Moses and Aaron. 15. The Ten Commandments can be divided into two parts; viz., (1) Our duties to God and (2) our duties to man. 16. Write here and explain commandment number one. You shall have no other gods before me. There is one and only one true God. He is not one of a pantheon of lesser gods. We are to worship, obey and acknowledge only Him as God. 17. Write here and explain commandment number two. You shall not make for yourself a carved image to worship. Do not worship idols. They are false gods, only cast metal or carved wood, made by the hands of man. They have no power or ability to help you. Worshiping the image of

6 6 something created by God, in the air, on the land or in the water is also forbidden. 18. Write here and explain commandment number three. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. God is Holy and His name is also Holy, only to be spoken with reverence and respect. It is not to be used frivolously or in an insincere manner. 19. Write here and explain commandment number four. The seventh day was to be kept Holy by ceasing labor on that day. God created the heavens and earth in six days and on the seventh day He rested. God made us in His image and He understands that we need a day of rest from our labors and time to worship and give Him honor and glory.

7 Write here and explain commandment number five. Honor your father and mother. Just as we are commanded to honor our heavenly Father, we are to do the same for our parents. The term honor means to treat with significance. Remember your parents, especially in their old age and care for them and honor them with respect. 21. Write here and explain commandment number seven. You shall not commit adultery. Marriage is a holy covenant with God uniting a man and woman together. Marriage is central in God s will for mankind s relationship. Adultery breaks that covenant and will usually destroy the family._ 23. Write here and explain commandment number eight. You shall not steal. This commandment protects the sanctity of the individual s property rights.

8 Write here and explain commandment number nine. You shall not bear false witness. Any testimony that you give, whether it is for or against another person, must be truthful. Be honest in all that you say and do. 25. Write here and explain commandment number ten. You shall not covet. Sin begins in the heart and when you covet something or someone you will connive a scheme to obtain it. Covetousness must be ceased before it progresses from a desire to a sinful action. 26. What reaction did Israel have in response to the thunder, lightning, sound of the trumpet and smoke on Mt. Sinai? All the people trembled in fear. They told Moses to speak to them for God because they would surely die if God spoke directly to them.

9 Why was it so very necessary for God to urge Israel repeatedly to abstain from idolatry? Even though the Israelites were again warned not to make or worship idols while Moses was on the mountain in the presence of God, they persuaded Aaron to make a golden calf that they could worship. 28. What followed the giving of the Decalogue in Exodus 20:22-23:33? Following the Decalogue are a series of laws, civil, social and religious in writings known as the book of the covenant. Topics covered are (1) the worship of God, (2) the rights of persons, (3) the rights of property and (4) things connected with the civil organization of the state. In all, more than seventy different laws are stipulated. 29. What did God command in Exodus 20:24-26? Altars on which burnt animal sacrifices and fellowship, peace offerings to Jehovah were offered were to be made of earth (dirt). Any altar made of stone was to be built of unhewn stones. Steps were not to be used to go up to the altar.

(1) It revealed God s glory and holiness, (2) It manifested the sinfulness of man, (3) It marked Israel as God s chosen people, (4) It gave Israel a godly standard by which they might continue to inhabit Canaan, (5) It prepared Israel for the coming of the promised seed, (6) It illustrated in various forms and ceremonies the person and work of Christ.
