THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS IS THE FIFTH FEAST & IT WAS CELEBRATED DURING THE FALL PILGRIMAGE TO JERUSALEM & THE TEMPLE
IT HAS A TWO-FOLD PURPOSE CELEBRATES PAST Remembers 1) the Creation, 2) that Abraham offered up Isaac, and 3) that God will blow a trumpet to raise the dead. LOOKS TO FUTURE The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed (I Cor. 15:52). 2
TRUMPETS IN THE WILDERNESS God told Moses to make two trumpets of silver and blow them: To signal the people to assemble, To signal the people to march, To use at times of war, To announce the feast days and sacrifices (Num. 10:1-10). He even told Moses what Feast days to observe, when to observe them and why they should observe them (Lev. 23).
A SIGNAL FOR PEOPLE TO ASSEMBLE God said, when they shall blow with them [blow the trumpets], all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation (Num. 10:3). Before God spoke to the Hebrews at Mt. Sinai, He told them to assemble at the sound of a trumpet (Ex. 19:13). When Jesus blows the trumpet all of the Church will assemble in the air and go to the door of heaven (I Thess. 4:13-18).
A SIGNAL FOR PEOPLE TO MARCH God said, Make thee two trumpets of silver... for the journeying of the camps (Num. 10: 2). The Hebrews were to continue their march in the wilderness by stepping out at the sound of a trumpet (the voice of God). Christians should march at the sound or voice of God.
A SIGNAL AT TIMES OF WAR God said, If ye go to war... blow the trumpets & I will remember you (Num. 10:9). At Jericho, God told Joshua to march around the city once each day for 6 days & have priests blow rams horns (shofars or trumpets; Josh. 6:1-27). He told them to do it 7 times on the seventh day. They did & the walls of Jericho fell. Trumpets are associated with the 2 nd Coming of Jesus. The Trib. Per. is a day of trumpet & alarm (Zeph. 1:16). 7 angels will blow 7 trumpets and 7 judgments will fall. When the 7 th angel blows the 7 th trumpet an angel will say, The kingdoms of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever (Rev. 11:15).
A SIGNAL TO ANNOUNCE THE FEAST DAYS & SACRIFICES God said, in the day of your gladness... Ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices (Num. 10:10). Trumpets were blown to show that the Feast Days & sacrifices were special days & events not ordinary days & events. All of them point to Jesus.
THE SHOFAR The Jews used two silver trumpets for many years, but they ultimately decided that Abraham offered up Isaac on the Feast of Trumpets so they started blowing a shofar in addition to the silver trumpets. The Jews believe Abraham made the first two shofars from the horns of the ram that he sacrificed on the Temple Mount in Isaac s place.
FYI The Jews will make a shofar from the horns of any animal except a cow. They won t use a cow s horn because the Jews in the wilderness worshiped the golden calf. They associate cow s horns with false worship (Ex. 32).
FYI A set of instructions for blowing the Shofar was found with the Dead Sea Scrolls.
FYI On June 7, 1967, the day that Israel recaptured the Temple Mount, Rabbi Schlomo Goren went to the Temple Mount and blew a shofar. He blew the shofar to symbolically announce to the world that Go is gathering His people in the land that He gave to them and their fathers.
TRUMPETS & THE VOICE OF GOD Trumpets are associated with the voice of God because the Israelites heard the voice of the trumpet when God came down to give them the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai (Ex. 19:16). Trumpets are associated with God gathering His people at the sound of a trumpet (Isa. 27:13). When John saw Jesus on the Isle of Patmos he heard a voice like a trumpet (Rev. 1:10). When John was called up into heaven he heard a voice as of a trumpet (Rev. 4:1).
TRUMPETS & THE RESURRECTION Isaac s experience at Mt. Moriah is seen as a type of death & resurrection (Gen. 22). The Jews believe the voice of God (trumpet) will sound when He raises the dead & gathers His people. Paul said, the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: & the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up [or Raptured] together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: & so shall we ever be with the Lord (I Thess. 4:16-17).
A PICTURE OF THE RAPTURE Moses led the Jews to Mt. Sinai (Ex. 19:1). God told Moses He would come down in a thick cloud to meet the people (Ex. 19:9-11). Jesus will come down or descend from heaven in the clouds to meet His people at the Rapture (I Thess. 4:16). God wanted the people to hear His voice (Ex. 19-9). Jesus will come down with a shout so His people will hear His voice (I Thess. 4:16).
THE SOUND OF A TRUMPET God told Moses, When the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount (Ex. 19:13). In Rev. 4:1, John said, I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither.
THREE DAYS LATER There were thunderings & lightnings, & a thick cloud upon the mount, & the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud (Ex. 19:16). And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God Ex. 19:17). At the Rapture, the church will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air (I Thess. 4:17).
THE GREAT BLAST Mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: & the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, & the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, & waxed louder & louder, Moses spake, & God answered him by a voice (Ex. 19:18-19). The last blast of the trumpet was the longest and loudest. Jews call this last blast the last trump or the great blast.
THE LAST TRUMP Paul said, Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed (I Cor. 15:51-52). Some Christians (not all) believe the Rapture will occur at the last trump or Great Blast of the trumpet on the Feast of Trumpets (blast #100).
THE YOU SHALL CAST CEREMONY In the afternoon on the Feast of Trumpets, the Jews celebrate a ritual called the tashlich which means You shall cast. They read Psa. 47 which says the Lord is a great King over all the earth. It says, God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. He will come back the same way.
Many Jews believe that God will cast all of their sins into the depths of the sea (Mic. 7:18-19). Following the reading of Psa. 47, they run to the nearest place of water (nearest well, creek, river, etc). They empty their pockets looking for trash (crumbs, pebbles, lint, etc.). They cast their trash into the water. Jesus will treat our sins like trash and cast them away. The wise will give them up before He returns.
SINCE THE DAYS OF MOSES, GOD HAS FOLLOWED A PRECISE PLAN The first three feasts of the Lord coincided with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The fourth feast of the Lord coincided with the beginning of the Church. The Bible doesn t say so, but some believe the Church will be Raptured on the fifth feast (Feast of Trumpets).
