Health effects can include muscle spasm, shock, burns, palpitations, nausea and vomiting, collapse, fibrillation, unconsciousness, or death. Other risks include fires and explosions. The two most common types of electrical dangers are: - Plugged-in equipment, such as drills and circular saws - Permanently connected or hard
2 Personnel Competent people. Risk assessment. Use of unqualified staff. No person shall perform work on any electrical equipment, unless they are certified by relevant authority. Confirmation of an individuals valid certification to be requested prior to hiring or commencement of electrical work. All electrical equipment, acquired or used on worksite shall be approved in accordance with the provisions of or other acceptable testing agency. Controller of Premises to perform risk assessment. Note - It is the Controller of Premises responsibility to identify hazards. If there is no register electrical hazards, it is the Controller of Premises responsibility to ensure a register is established Are there any unusual or specific hazards associated with the electrical work, such as other workers or working at heights? Are there any site occupancy restrictions and conditions, including access and egress, work schedules and emergency management arrangements, including emergency communication and evacuation plans?
3 Preparation All electrical distribution switches and controls shall be clearly marked to indicate the machinery or equipment which they serve. Metal ladders, or wire-reinforced wooden ladders, shall not be used in proximity to energized electrical equipment. Avoid using electrical tools and equipment in or around damp or wet areas; Electric leads and cords should be checked for physical damage before each use and electrically tested as required by local regulations.
4 Operation Flammable material shall not be stored or placed in proximity to electrical equipment. The requirements for lock-out of energized electrical equipment shall be followed whenever such equipment is to be worked on. All electrical tools and equipment must be grounded or double insulated. Extension cords should only be used for temporary service and should be maintained in good condition at all times. They should be routinely inspected for frayed, torn or split cords and damaged plugs or connectors. All damaged cords must be repaired or replaced immediately. Never replace a blown fuse with a larger capacity fuse. Cover plates should be in place on all switches and outlets. Jacketed electrical cords should be used with portable electric tools and with extension lamps in boilers, tanks or other grounded enclosures. Non-conductive material should be used to form the handles on portable handlamps and there should be no metallic connectors between the lamp guard and the socket shell. Always make certain that plug connector configurations match -they are intentionally designed that way to prevent hazardous, or even fatal, electrical connections.
5 Emergency Procedure In the event that someone is electrocuted, immediately de-energize the equipment before touching the individual. Immediately call the First Aid attendant or dial 000 commence CPR if trained In the event of an electrical fire, never throw water or use a water based extinguisher A Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguisher (powder) is recommended for use in electronic environments
