POWERED BY UL OBSERVATIONS FROM CES Las Vegas, USA January 6-9, 2011
2011 CES AS A GLOBAL LEADER IN SAFETY, UL WAS PRESENT AT CES THIS YEAR. The 2011 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) reminds all of us that the explosion of high-tech and multimedia technology has helped erase the distinctions between different types of products. Suddenly computers, audio-video equipment, and other new information and communications technology are interconnected and interchangeable. Products originally designed for business have come home, and electronic equipment long used almost exclusively by adults is being mastered and embraced by children. The smart phone, handheld reader or tablet computer you carry now has as much power as any traditional desktop model. the idea of power, which is defined most basically as the ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something. 1 We know power can relate to political or national authority, to strength, to legal ability, and to feelings of control and capacity. There are other types of power emerging and on the rise. It is these initiatives we would like to share in detail with you. As a global leader in safety, with expertise in the environment and interoperability, UL was present at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this year. For 2011, we led with our strengths in knowledge and thought leadership by holding technical sessions on a variety of topics, including Mobility and Security, The Green Marketplace and Innovating Safety Engineering. Videos of the presentations will soon be available at UL.com/ces. As participants and attendees, we also wanted to share our observations on interesting growth areas that will impact our customers businesses and how we are anticipating these changing needs. These insights all stem from 1. Power, Carlos Correia Vice President & General Manager, Global High-Tech Industry
CES CES KEY OBSERVATIONS POWER OF MOBILITY POWER OF INFORMATION POWER SOURCES POWER OF INTEROPERABILITY POWER OF SOUND AND IMAGE POWER OF EMBEDDED TECHNOLOGY
POWER OF MOBILITY AS PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD BECOME MORE MOBILE, THEY ARE DEMANDING THE SAME ACCESS AND CONNECTIVITY ACROSS AND BETWEEN DEVICES.
POWER OF MOBILITY
POWER OF MOBILITY OBSERVATION IMPLICATIONS As people around the world become more mobile, they are demanding the same access and connectivity across and between devices. Whether at home, in the office or on the go, people have the desire to access seamless and consistent voice, data and video. This is becoming more significant, since the devices we carry (e.g., smart phones, tablet computers) have as much power as more traditional computers, and more people of all ages can use and afford these mobile devices. The increased exposure to these devices has created some potential safety issues, both personal and environmental. UL is actively involved in developing a new mobile device sustainability standard, mobile security and safety services for power adapters and battery chargers, and other vital battery services. We are also driving a new hazard-based approach to product safety as well as a related standard, IEC Ed 1.0: Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment Safety Requirements. This will facilitate the early identification of new hazards. With wireless charging options and wireless power interoperability rapidly emerging across rechargeable electronic devices, we are currently in development on UL 2738, a first-edition standard for induction power transmitters and receivers for low-energy products (e.g., cell phones, portable media players, global positioning devices).
POWER OF INFORMATION INCREASED CONNECTIVITY, SPEED AND ADVANCEMENTS ACROSS DEVICES NOW ENABLE ACCESS TO TREMENDOUS VOLUMES OF INFORMATION. WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO REVIEW, CONTRIBUTE AND SHARE CONTENT IN VARIOUS TYPES OF FORMATS, MORE QUICKLY AND MORE EASILY THAN EVER BEFORE.
POWER OF INFORMATION
POWER OF INFORMATION OBSERVATION IMPLICATIONS Increased connectivity, speed and technological advancements across devices enable access to tremendous volumes of information. Music, movies and data are now available via a range of devices, including MP3 players, televisions, laptops, tablet computers and phones. We now have the ability to review, contribute and share content in various types of formats, more quickly and more easily than ever before. Access to and control of this information are enabled by smart devices such as smart televisions, smart phones and tablet computers. An intuitive user interface clearly powers widespread adoption and a pleasurable user experience. Information and its processing move from the devices into the cloud, where large data centers store and process these details, enabling the user s access to the information at any time, from any device. UL is developing new standards to help ensure the safety and environmental sustainability of the portable devices and the large data centers.
POWER SOURCES AS WE RELY MORE HEAVILY ON MOBILE DEVICES, THEIR ABILITY TO USE POWER SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY IS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT. OTHER TYPES OF POWER, FROM ALTERNATE SOURCES SUCH AS SOLAR TO NEW STORAGE TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS FUEL CELLS, ARE BECOMING OPPORTUNITIES OF THE FUTURE.
POWER SOURCES
POWER SOURCES OBSERVATION IMPLICATIONS As we rely more heavily on mobile devices in particular, their ability to use power safely and efficiently is significant. Other types of power, from alternate sources such as solar to new storage technology such as fuel cells, are becoming the power of the future. Batteries are the main source of power for mobile devices today as such, there are a number of concerns, including safety, performance and recharging. UL provides a variety of safety-related services for batteries, including wireless charging with UL s new standard (UL 2738), and we are exploring a new standard for the relative performance of battery-powered products. Energy efficiency is also a key factor in battery performance. Our services here help to optimize and drive the overall efficiency of tablet computers, smart phones, etc. UL also offers safety and performance services for a number of alternative and renewable energy sources, including solar and fuel cell.
POWER OF INTEROPERABILITY WE EXPECT DEVICES TO WORK TOGETHER SEAMLESSLY ACROSS ENVIRONMENTS. THIS CAPABILITY HAS RESULTED IN THE RISE OF CONNECTED HOMES FEATURING THE ABILITY TO CONTROL APPLIANCES AND MONITOR ENERGY USAGE FROM YOUR TABLET COMPUTER OR SMART PHONE.
POWER OF INTEROPERABILITY
POWER OF INTEROPERABILITY OBSERVATION IMPLICATIONS Today we not only use a variety of devices, but we also expect them to work together seamlessly as we move from one environment to another and from one device to another. Familiar alliances, of which UL is a part, develop related standards that allow for this and can be seen on the packaging for the devices. They include HDMI, Home Plug, NFC, RFID, WiFi, Bluetooth, DLNA, WiGig, WirelessHD, 3G, LTE, etc. The capability to link devices together results in connected homes featuring the ability to control appliances and monitor energy usage from your tablet computer or smart phone. UL helps ensure the safety and interoperability of devices in a number of the protocols mentioned. We are actively working toward support of the next generation of connected devices, with standards related to mobile payments and security as well as cybersecurity and the smart grid.
POWER OF SOUND AND IMAGES AUDIO AND VIDEO DEVICES AND THE QUALITY OF SOUND AND IMAGES BEING PRESENTED BY DOLBY, DTS, THX, HD AND 3-D TECHNOLOGIES ARE BECOMING HIGHLY DESIRED. AS DEVICES GET SMALLER, MAINTAINING QUALITY LEVELS IS A GROWING PRIORITY.
POWER OF SOUND AND IMAGES
POWER OF SOUND AND IMAGES OBSERVATION IMPLICATIONS Audio and video devices and the related quality of images and sound being presented by Dolby, DTS, THX, HD and 3-D technologies, among others, are becoming highly desired, as they enhance the experiences people are seeking. Noise suppression/cancellation is a critical factor in personal listening/viewing situations, and as devices get smaller, maintaining quality levels to provide a realistic experience is a growing priority. In addition to the overall quality of the experience, there are potential short- and long-term physiological effects associated with usage that must be considered. While there are existing standards for sound and noise levels, UL sees additional opportunities to further develop these standards for image, sound quality and noise cancellation. We will partner with manufacturers to upgrade and develop new standards to address these issues and provide related testing services.
POWER OF EMBEDDED TECHNOLOGY DEVICES ARE NOT ONLY MORE PERVASIVE, THEY ARE BECOMING MORE INTIMATE AND LITERALLY PARTS OF OUR BODIES. FROM MEDICAL DEVICES SUCH AS PACEMAKERS TO 3-D GLASSES AND HEADSETS, DEVICES ARE ATTACHING TO MORE PARTS OF OUR BODIES THAN EVER BEFORE.
POWER OF EMBEDDED TECHNOLOGY
POWER OF EMBEDDED TECHNOLOGY OBSERVATION IMPLICATIONS Devices are not only more pervasive, they are becoming more intimate and literally parts of our bodies. From medical devices such as pacemakers and sports monitors to 3-D glasses and headsets, devices are attaching to more parts of our bodies than ever before. As devices live in and on our bodies, especially with medical offerings such as exoskeleton-type robots that help paralyzed people walk, the medical, wireless and interoperability services UL offers become critical to ensure safety. This, in addition to our ability to test batteries that serve as power sources for these devices, is critical to long-term safety and adoption. The use of technology in this area is evolving quickly, and we are still investigating and learning about the potential effects these devices may have on the body. It will be important to continue to use our hazard-based safety-engineering principles to develop standards for these products. This will lead to the creation of new standards for safety, interoperability and performance.
