1 Some important words and phrases: Cloud Computing Open Source software/application Proprietary brand software/application Accelerometer Wireless charging mat Bandwidth Latency IMAP/4 POP3 SMTP Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software/application) which are available in a remote location and accessible over a network (typically the Internet). Users are able to buy these computing resources (including storage and computing power) as a utility, on demand. It does not have to be downloaded before it can be used. Software that can be downloaded to a device free from licence fees and copyright laws. Open source refers to a program or software in which the source code (the form of the program when a programmer writes a program in a particular programming language) is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge. An example is Open Office. It has to be downloaded to a device before it can be used. Software that is restricted (through licences) such that only the company itself or licensees may use it. An example is Microsoft Office. It has to be downloaded to a device before it can be used. Sensors (such as accelerometers) are often found in personal digital devices. Data from them is used by the device s software to enhance the user experience. An accelerometer is a sensor that senses movement so that the device can rotate the image on the touchscreen to help when playing games and looking at Internet sites or video s. It can turn a phone off when dropped to help protect the phone and information on it. Wireless or inductive charging allows short-distance wireless energy transfer between two devices. Wireless charging requires placing a phone directly on a charging pad, which needs to be placed flat on a surface. They are improving health and safety as power mats stop the hassle with trailing wires. They reduce the need for different chargers for each device. Bandwidth describes the maximum data transfer rate of a network or Internet connection. It measures how much data can be sent over a specific connection in a given amount of time. Downloads will finish much faster when you have a high-bandwidth connection rather than a low-bandwidth connection. This is the amount of time it takes a packet of data to move across a network connection. When a packet is being sent, there is "latent" time, when the computer that sent the packet waits for confirmation that the packet has been received. Latency and bandwidth are the two factors that determine your network connection speed. Stands for "Internet Message Access Protocol" and is pronounced "eye-map." It is a method of accessing messages on a server without having to download them to your local hard drive. This is the main difference between IMAP and another popular protocol called "POP3." The advantage of using an IMAP mail server is that users can check their mail from multiple computers and always see the same messages. This is because the messages stay on the server until the user chooses to download them to his or her local drive. Most webmail systems are IMAP based, which allows people to access to both their sent and received messages no matter what computer they use to check their mail. POP3 requires users to download messages to their hard drive before reading them. Stands for "Post Office Protocol." POP3, sometimes referred to as just "POP," is a simple, standardized method of delivering messages. A POP3 mail server receives s and filters them into the appropriate user folders. When a user connects to the mail server to retrieve his mail, the messages are downloaded from mail server to the user's hard disk. Stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol." This is the protocol used for sending over the Internet.
2 FTP Transactional data 3G 4G Peripheral device Auction sites WiFi Direct Viral video Advanced search techniques Challenge response test CCV code Stands for "File Transfer Protocol." It is a common method of transferring files via the Internet from one computer to another. Information like personal details, orders, invoices, payments. 3G is a collection of third generation cellular data technologies. In order to be labelled "3G," a cellular data transfer standard must meet a set of specifications; all 3G standards must provide a peak data transfer rate of at least 2 Mbps. Most 3G standards, however, provide much faster transfer rates of up to 14.4 Mbps. 4G is a collection of fourth generation cellular data technologies. It succeeds 3G and is also called "IMT-Advanced," or "International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced." All 4G are required to provide peak data transfer rates of at least 100 Mbps. While actual download and upload speeds may vary based on signal strength and wireless interference, 4G data transfer rates can actually surpass those of cable modem and DSL connections. A computer peripheral is any external device that provides input and output for the computer. For example, a keyboard and mouse are input peripherals, while a monitor and printer are output peripherals. Ebay which include features like customer feedback, watching items, etc. Wi-Fi Direct, initially called Wi-Fi P2P, is a standard that enables Wi-Fi devices to easily connect with each other and quickly communicate without requiring a wireless access point. Wi-Fi Direct enabled devices transfer data directly between each other with greatly reduced setup. And only one of the Wi-Fi devices needs to be compliant with Wi-Fi Direct to establish the peer-to-peer connection. A viral video is a video that was created and becomes popular through the process of Internet sharing, typically through video sharing websites, social media and . Promotes / advertises / marketing through the sharing or distribution of a video via using social networking sites, etc. It is often a less expensive method. Searching the internet using keywords, Boolean operators (e.g. AND, OR, NOT,+, Searching by location, date or language or search type (e.g. pictures, maps, music, movies) A challenge-response system is a program that replies to an message from an unknown sender by subjecting the sender to a test (called a CAPTCHA) designed to differentiate humans from automated senders. Typically, when a message is received, the system sends a reply that includes a URL linking the user to a Web site. At the Web site, the user is asked to perform some task that, while easy for a human, is beyond the capabilities of an automated spamming program. The system might ask the answer to a simple question, for example, or require the user to copy distorted letters or numbers displayed in an image. A number found on the back of a credit or debit card that adds another level of security to a transaction.
