1 The Holy Spirit Goes Big: Have you ever asked yourself how did Jesus do what He did in his 33 years as a man? Who is the person of the Holy Spirit in Jesus life, who the Holy Spirit is today, and how He desires to be alive in our lives today. The oft-neglected and misunderstood third person of the Trinity desires to be known and understood by us, so He can minister both to us and through us. A Spirit filled and controlled life enables us to walk as Jesus did and postures us to do not only what Jesus did, but even greater things. Encountering the fullness of Jesus: In relationship to the Father, Through Jesus, By the Holy Spirit. Outline: Intro: 1. Why is this important for you and I today? a. Externally Following Jesus vs. Internally Following Jesus b. Necessity of Supernatural Life i. Signs, wonders and supernatural life need to be a part of our daily experience now or we will quickly and easily be deceived. 1. Revelation 13:3 The whole world was astonished and followed the beast a. Rev 13:10 This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints. 2. Revelation 13:14 Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. a. Rev 3:18 This calls for wisdom. ii. Yes, these things will fade away (because of perfect communion restored) and love will remain however in this age we need to have the supernatural being our normal. Jesus lived with the supernatural as his normal. He lived this way fully as a man just like us, filled with Holy Spirit. c. Can t we just stick to Jesus the Holy Spirit is weird? i. Just Jesus is easy: God and Man ii. Holy Spirit: we have to look at each other as example. iii. Do you love God and want to love Him more? 1. Romans 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 2. John 17:26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them. 3. John 15:26 And He will bear witness to me. iv. It takes God to love God.
2 1. You know how to love God better than God knows how love God? 2. The Holy Spirit knows how to love Jesus better than us and desires to show us how He loves Jesus. 3. We submit to Holy Spirit to learn how to love Jesus not vice versa. 4. Jesus greatest gift to me is Holy Spirit. v. Theologically saying, I know how to love Jesus better than Holy Spirit knows how to love Jesus Who is the Holy Spirit? a. Trinitarian Theology b. Jesus and the Holy Spirit c. The Names of the Holy Spirit d. Jobs of the Holy Spirit 3. The Holy Spirit and You a. The temple i. The very presence of God in you b. An ungrieved Holy Spirit c. Jesus the baptizer i. Fire & Spirit, not the dove. 4. A Spirit Controlled Life: Living like Jesus a. The Beatitudes b. Daily Filling 5. Walking with the Holy Spirit: Doing what Jesus did and greater things. a. Ministering in the power of the Spirit b. Eagerly desiring the gifts of the Spirit c. Praying with the Spirit Who is the Holy Spirit? 1. Third person of the Trinity: Father, Son & Holy Spirit a. Three Who s share the same What: Trinity has three persons and one nature. i. Nature: Eternal, All Powerful, All Knowing, Unchanging ii. He is God; eternal & holy; omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. b. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works them in all men. c. Romans 14: For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating or drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.
3 d. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. e. Ephesians 1:13-15 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God s possession to the praise of His glory. The Holy Spirit and Jesus 1. It was always the plan for Messiah to connect us to Holy Spirit. a. Isaiah 42:1 Here is my servant, my chosen one in whom is all my delight. I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. 2. Jesus was baptized in the Holy Spirit a. Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3: Jesus: it is better to have the Spirit than the Son a. John 16:6 It is for your good that I am going away 4. He wished the Spirit could have been given sooner a. Luke 12:49 I have come to bring fire on the earth and how I wish it were already kindled 5. The fiercest defender and the only unforgiveable sin a. Matt 11:31-32 Anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 6. His leaving would release Holy Spirit to do what He had been doing and greater things. a. John 14:12 You will do what I have been doing and even greater things because I am going to the Father. Names for the Holy Spirit 1. Spirit of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2) a. The Spirit of the Lord. Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2) 2. Spirit of wisdom and understanding/revelation (Isaiah 11:2, Eph 1:17) 3. Spirit of counsel and of power (Isaiah 11:2) 4. Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2) 5. The Spirit of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:19) 6. The Counselor & Comforter (John 14: 16 & 27, John 15:26, John 16:7) 7. The Spirit of Truth (John 14:17) Jobs of the Holy Spirit 1. Creator: a. Genesis 1:2 No the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. b. Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
4 c. Psalm 104:30 When you send your Spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth. d. Is. 32:15 Till the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field seems like a forest. e. Ez. 37:14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live 2. Gift Giver a. Exodus 31:3 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of crafts b. Exodus 29:3 Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom. c. 1 Corinthians 12:4 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 3. Guide for Daily Life a. Live by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18), and walk in the fear of the Lord and the counsel of the Holy Spirit. ( Acts 9:31) 4. Source of Revelation and Understanding of the Deep things of God a. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 v.10, 12 The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God we have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God that we may understand what God has freely given us. 5. Revealer of Jesus a. John 15:26 When the Counselor comes, whom I will send ot you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. 6. Source of Conviction a. John 16:7-11 When He comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment; in regard to sin because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. The Holy Spirit and You 1. The Dwelling Place, The Temple, Jars of Clay a. Eph 2:22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit. b. 1 Corinthians 3:16 don t you know that you yourselves are God s temple and that God s Spirit lives in you? c. John 14:17 But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. d. 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. e. 2 Corinthians 5: An Ungrieved Holy Spirit a. Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. b. Holiness because He is holy. Holiness is not religious or legalism. It is simply being like God. We don t get to pick and choose which things we obey and which we don t. God doesn t look at outward appearance
5 but looks at the heart. Sin grieves the Holy Spirit and brings death when the Spirit is in you to bring life. The Holy Spirit says what is being said in Heaven: John 16:12-13 But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. Jesus said what was being said by the Father: John 8:28 When you have lifted up the son of man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father taught me. John 14:24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. Hearing God s Voice: 1. John 8:47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. 2. John 10:27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. 3. George Muller The office of the Holy Spirit I had not experimentally understood before that time. I had not before seen that the Holy Spirit alone can teach us about our state by nature, show us our need of a Saviour, enable us to believe in Christ, explain to us the Scriptures, help us in preaching, etc. Why is this even important? Why Trinitarian theology? Why not just Jesus? Why do we need to be willing not only tolerate, but fully embrace the Holy Spirit, His giftings, His manifestations, etc? 1. Signs, wonders and supernatural life needs to be a part of our daily experience now or we will quickly and easily be deceived. Revelation Yes, these things will fade away (because of perfect communion restored) and love will remain however in this age we need to have the supernatural being our normal. Jesus lived with the supernatural as his normal. 1 Corinthians 13 You have day to day relationship with Holy Spirit, not Jesus. 1. Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father. 2. Jesus was God with us, Emmanuel. The Incarnation is so amazing and necessary. 3. The Holy Spirit is God in us. This is even better!
