1 Eric R. Rock Partner Chicago p f Overview Eric R. Rock concentrates his practice on customs and international trade matters. His areas of experience include the tariff classification, valuation and eligibility of merchandise for various free trade agreements and trade preference programs. Eric also advises clients regarding US export laws and regulations, including restrictions on the sale or disclosure of US-origin technology to foreign nationals, export licensing requirements, encryption controls and compliance with US trade embargoes. He has also represented clients entering into transactions subject to Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) reporting based on national interest concerns, and has represented clients in all facets of trade compliance, including administrative proceedings, litigation, audits and internal reviews of trade matters. Over the course of his more than 20-year career, Eric has developed unique experience in creating innovative compliance solutions and proactive countermeasures to address the challenges facing his clients. He frequently handles inquiries related to textiles, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and antidumping compliance. He also assists clients in successfully enrolling in beneficial trade programs such as the Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) program and the Customs- Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT). Before joining Katten, Eric spent 19 years as a licensed customs broker, working with corporate clients to implement trade compliance initiatives and tailor procedures to ensure the effective importation and exportation of merchandise. He oversaw the processing of numerous transactions through a broad range of government agencies, including US Customs and Border Protection (CBP); the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA); the Bureau of Industry and Security; the US Department of Commerce; the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC); the US State Department; the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC); the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF); and CFIUS.
